I used to do the tunnel trek but it takes forever unless you're already on the highway.

If you head towards the highway from the marsh track you can jump onto it from the bank on the right by the tunnel entrance. Back in the base in one minute.

Take the jet that is facing the golf coarse, that is sitting outside the hangar. Once you get airborne, fly over the fence then dip down so you're about 10' off the ground. The missiles should miss you every time. Also you want to enter the base from the western flank. If you want a challenge, try driving in.

Luck plays a big part because I suck at flying and have stolen quite a few.

What do you expect? A well protected airbase with absolutely no-one patrolling? Don't waste time by killing people that are far away. If soldiers are beside the Lazer, shoot them several times, it shouldn't matter if they are completely down and dead. Then you need to get a lengthy runway. Don't attempt to fly away if you don't have enough room to actually get in the air.
