Trevor was too over the top

I read it. Sorry still can't see anything deep or complex about that. Anyone can take something and analyze it as deep as they want to and say it's this or that. No I just don't see it with Trevor.

Then I'm sorry to report that you seem to be extremely close-minded about the situation with Trevor. Maybe if you realized that not everyone wants to over-analyze a character to make him seem important or more than he is, you'd know that there's a reason so many people admire his complexity and what he represents.

You just don't see it. That's kind of too bad, I guess. But you seem to be bias anyway, so whatever.

It's not like I have not played and finished the game, I have, and I own it too.

Maybe I am closed-minded about Trevor's situation. Maybe I am biased against his character. If I don't see greatness in his character, then I don't. It's not too bad for me, because I don't wanna know it in the first place.

Nope. Niko is an amazing protagonist. I'm the last person you want to try and convince otherwise. :)

Who said I was trying to convince you? If you really like him, good for you, it just means you enjoyed GTAIV all the more. That said, he's not an "amazing" protagonist if we're talking every conceivable story-telling medium. Maybe for a video game, but that's as far as that goes.

Niko is a hundred times a better protagonist than Trevor is that's for sure.

He does sometimes go over the top like the time when he killed Floyd and his wife just because Floyd asked him to leave him alone. I know Floyd have got his head up is ass but he didn't deserve to get murdered and Floyd was quite loyal to him.

Trevor was my fav protagonist, I don't think he needed to be toned down... just right for my liking

They can't be compared. Niko was a carefully constructed character with a deep history and real motivations

Trevor was a cheap gimmick to satisfy 12yr old Saints Row fans

As Trevors legal council, I'm obligated to say this. Trevor did it in an act of self-preservation. Floyd and his woman were armed, forcing Trevor to defend his own life. He was left with no other options.

I'll just copy-paste what I said in the "Unexpected sad/depressing" moments thread because I'm a lazy piece of sh*t that's tired of debating his points fair and square.

I think the small things about Trevor are really one of the most depressing aspects of the game as a whole. Like how he shows flashes of a clean, reasonable and mentally stable person at several points in the game.

The undertones of his torture are what saddens me the most. Especially with those calls Patricia gives him and they share those short moments of an actual normal talk. Without Trevor going off the rails. Like an actual, caring conversation.

So yeah, I guess the "small details" regarding Trevor are what depress me the most. It's funny because, most of the times (and even during several of the rampage missions), he's quite relaxed. Friendly, even. But the things people say (The things some people can't resist saying to insult or antagonize) just set him the f*ck off.

I like how his theme reflects his deep mental torment, as well. It isn't what you'd expect from a "Wacky generic rampaging hill-billy" character (His character is above that stereotype, in my opinion.).

In retrospect, I see that I accidentally made him look like a victim. He is, to an extent. Like a lot of people in the world. A victim of society. Although, in his specific case, also a victim of a seemingly horrible and tormenting childhood.

It doesn't justify his evident crimes against humanity as a species, with some of the things he's done. Cannibalism, many kinds of rape and sexual intimidation/torment.

There are reasons for all of those crimes (childhood), though. And they most certainly go a bit deeper than "haha he is so whacky and crazy what a sick f*ck xD".

I should have made it more apparent that when I said "Nice job on this really deep and difficult breakdown of the character" I was being sarcastic.

Actually, with the context of the rest of the post it should be obvious. Hell, nowhere in there am I saying Trevor's character is deep - I'm referring to the "dissection" of the character you've made in your posts.

Trevor isn't deep. He isn't complicated. He's nothing compared to Niko or Michael.

I find it hilarious you're calling me a Trevor fanboy when all I've been saying is that he isn't too over the top. He isn't even my favorite character. But hey, I guess if resulting to insults and claiming everyone but you is being biased is the best you can do, that was a pretty top-notch reply. Right on man, keep up the good work. We're all very proud of you.

You either have no idea on how to get your point across or you're just back tracking because you have no argument at this point. Either way its pretty pathetic

Yet you continue to dismiss everything I say or focus on only one piece in my post.

I know exactly how to get my point across. I stated it when I brought up real-life psychopaths that make Trevor look like an angel. You can say he was over the top, but he could have been much worse.

I made my point when I brought up how controversial Trevor's actions were, or "By The Book," or when he stomped out a protagonist. How Rockstar has shifted from riling up the media, to riling up the fans. I remember someone here mentioning that GTA V is practically a satire of itself. How it took themes and tropes from the previous games and made fun of them. How Rockstar just took everything and said "You wanted this, here you go!" and that seems pretty spot on with the humor in the game.

Yeah the teddy-bear thing, waking up in bed with Floyd, waking up somewhere in a dress, all that weird-wacky sh*t is to balance out Trevor's darker antics. You don't have to like it, but that's what it's there for.

The way I see it, we could have had the Trevor we have now - or a toned down one where he is just some guy with some mental issues, and does some pretty dark sh*t - on par with Eddie Low.

Trevor was never supposed to be deep, and I don't see how he is. He's supposed to be the character that fits the average GTA player's play-type. Doing whatever, whenever - f*ck all. He's that, with some backstory and personality. We knew this before the game was released, previews talked about this.

Anyways, now I'm backtracking because I'm saying Trevor isn't deep, even when I never claimed he was, and I was discussing a totally different thing about him? Okay pal-e, whatever make you happy. That's what we're here for!

^^^

That seems a little self congratulatory...just saying. I see Trevor for what he is...a teddy bear sniffing psycho.

Not that being a psycho is all that revolutionary in GTA...btw causing controversy isn't anything special, it just means R* are doing what they always do.

Sometimes it works, and other times it doesn't. Props to them for sticking to their guns, but it's perplexing that a personified rampage would become a character.

Isn't that all GTA characters?

With all due respect, I'm not quite sure you got the cusp of the point cp1dell was trying to make. Yes controversy has always come hand in hand with any GTA, but never has a protag kicked up quite a stink to this degree with a certain segment of the actual fans. The 'Johnny' fans for example, or those guys around here who felt Trevor was too violent and didn't shampoo his hair enough, or the bigots who keep bringing up his apparent bisexual tendencies as a reason to dislike him. Never has a protag in the series had such an affect in this manner before, and the reaction and discussion it has provoked is probably exactly what R* were looking to create when developing a character that will most certainly go down as one of the most memorable in this great franchise.

@General

You really do struggle to put something across without having to tip it off with a little cheap dig, huh?...it really does render your retorts void chief.

Heres the thing...I don't see a big deal and you saying that R* kicked up a controversy among fans doesn't make it true. Johnny was not a big deal to most people.

Trevor has a few scenes that are made to tone down his craziness, Patricia being the main one. Without those scenes he becomes even more one dimensional.

Sorry, I'm just not feeling his character as much as F and M. I like all three, just him the least.

Its already implied that everything said in this thread is an opinion

Do you want me to put "IMO" before everything I post so you get the picture?

No, when you say "you're reading more into Trevor than Rockstar did", YOU are implying you know how rockstar wanted Trevor to be and my view of him is factually incorrect. That statement does not have an implied "in my opinion" behind it. And, as such, the quoted response is a cheap cop out.

Everything in this thread is opinion? Ok, humans are carbon based lifeforms. Of course, that's not a fact, that's just my opinion.

I stopped caring so I'll just let you keep on raging

Disagree entirely. Steven Ogg played Trevor amazingly, and he was also written amazingly well.

The only time he even comes close to being "over the top" is when he is first introduced in Mr. Phillips, other than that it's actually a very nuanced performance.

If people think this is over the top, they haven't seen many people try to actually play a convincing psychopath. They tend to just ham it up for the sake of it.

Also, the people that hate Trevor just because he's "a piece of sh*t" are probably the most laughable GTA fans. They tend to appear to be the same people who think that Micheal is a good guy, and Franklin is just a dumb gang banger.

So people having different opinions than you are laughable? f*ck kid, you need to stop posting. Maybe take Trevors dick out of your mouth while you're at it

No, dumbasses are laughable. A lot like you Mr. I-only-joined-a-f*cking-week-ago.

People don't like Trevor, that's fine. But when the only reason amounts to "he's a bad guy" they're f*cking idiots.

For those who don't know, this song was written for GTA V and explains Ending A (Kill Trevor) from Michael and Trevor's perspectives, with the first verse from Mike's perspective and the second verse from Trev's perspective. Anyway, here's what this song means:

Without going into too much detail, a character is killed - a character that is the source of stress and trouble for other characters gets killed ("anxiety, so one more in his eye, I can breathe". The character is, himself, a tortured soul, so the second verse looks at the same event - him being shot and killed - from his own perspective: "so one more in my eye, and now I can see".

Nine I think refers to a 9mm glock (the vessel that kills the "he" in this song).

:(:( I'm so sad, i could cry.

YEAH! FEEL SORRY FOR HIM! The poor soul.:cry:

Yeah, he was indeed a poor soul. He lost his mental stability and all of that. He was a misguided soul who thought that eating people is OK, when it is NOT. May he rest in (Dr.Friedlander's) piss.

At least he survived the last heist, that was his dream, right?
