Rooftop Sniping - a Guide

Recommended Posts

raspykestrel1

Getting hassle from a tank? Collecting some bounties? Or just feel like being an obnoxious troll?

Grab a chopper, and get on a rooftop with your sniper rifle! This guide gives you the best rooftops for sniping from in Los Santos.

I've also discovered recently that its fairly easy to snipe a Lazer from the top of any building with a good view. I'm not sure exactly how many shots it takes, because at the distance i couldnt tell how many of my bullets were hitting, but i fired around 40 shots with a suppressed regular sniper rifle. i would expect i only managed to hit around 25%, which would make it 10 shots. Unless im a better shot than i think, maybe i hit 50%+, which would mean it takes 20 shots+, but either way, its very possible. Same goes for a titan - doesnt take too many shots to bring it down

There are a few tips for picking a good vantage point:

  • skyscrapers are no good - the height of the building adds to the range, giving you a reduced effective range. At closer ranges, enemies will be in defilade - too close to the building for you to be able to aim down at them - whilst you will end up right on the edge of the building trying to kill them, silhouetted against the sky - an easy target for all the people trying to get revenge on you
  • a rooftop with no 'lip' around the edge is VERY easy to fall off when moving around close to the edge. A lip that is too high will block your view.
  • If your helicopter is visible from the ground, someone WILL blow it up, so land away from the edge if possible
  • Get a buzzard if possible - its smaller, so easier to land, harder for your enemies to see, and therefore blow up from the ground, and if someone comes after you in a heli, you're ready to either snipe them out of it, or take off in your buzzard and wipe them out :)
These are some of the best rooftops in the northern half of the city, also shown are the areas within range (in corresponding colour). The black circles indicate approximate player render distance (outside this distance, players to not appear, although they are still there, so it is sometimes possible to snipe them even though they are invisible). This is the inner circle. The outer circle is the magic .2miles, outside which it is possible to snipe a player out if his tank WITHOUT aiming for the vents at the back - just aim for where the player is sitting inside the tank .

-EDIT- I've added in some pictures of the buildings - apologise for the sh*tty resolution, i'm at work so im on my little screen :p

1624222_10152238654999813_1511322722_n.j

Yellow – Vinewood Gardens Hotel, in the block to the north of 1162 power st apt. Not the best in the world, but its the only decent one in that area of the city. you'll need to climb onto the lip around the edge of the building to get your shot

1546105_10152238666479813_253036174_n.jp

Blue – On top of the Tinsel Towers purchasable apartments. My personal favourite - the main LSC is in range (though characters are out of render distance, so you'll need to wait til they get into a car), and you have views right down the long road running to the west, and down to the freeway bridge to the southeast

1743703_10152238666784813_449075331_n.jp1655934_10152238674454813_1582857749_n.j

Red – the Lombank building adjacent to Del Perro Heights apartment, (it's the tall white building on the left of this block in the pic)- look for a blue and yellow helipad. Great views or the beach and pier, this is also the site of one of my best killstreaks - a player with a 9,000 bounty on his head was hiding in his Del Perro Heights apt, and i sat on my rooftop sniping every single person that drove up looking for him :D

1624608_10152238654994813_609637398_n.jp

Green – the triangular Celltowa building - some great long straights to aim down, and for some reason there always seems to be a war going on in the area between a number of players, so just pick them off one by one

1082660_10152238654979813_1907900859_n.j

Orange - a pretty non-descript building on Elgin Ave, dwarfed by the skyscrapers to the north and west. It is due south of the FIB skyscraper. Decent views of the downtown area, and the area to the south

1620397_10152238667429813_161587972_n.jp

Finally there is another building that i didnt mark on the map, because most of the areas it covers overlap with the Red and Green buildings. It is about 2 blocks due west of the Green building - directly opposite the robbable liquor store. Look for a tell building with a large clock tower - once you land, you can climb ladder right up to the top of the clock tower. This building covers Vespucci Canals, and the beach better than the red and green buildings - but its main advantage (and the only time i really use it) is that it covers the Rhino delivery point on the beach next to the pier, so it's relatively simple to keep sniping the guy who's trying to get into his newly-delivered tank ;)

Southern Los Santos:

1616709_10152238654974813_727266114_n.jp

Yellow - on top of the tower at the southern end of the Vitreous industrial plant. Not a great vantage point - very vulnerable to return fire, but some decent views, and it is the only building in the area that is worth mentioning. The tower is just to the right of the chopper in this pic

1555467_10152238667604813_30371499_n.jpg

Green - a complex of 2 pairs of buildings just north of the 0115 Bay City Ave apt. again, not great, but they do give complete overwatch of the helipad to the east, so when you get a couple of players fighting over choppers, just sit up there and rack up the kills ;)

1797117_10152238654984813_88568022_n.jpg

Red - chopper not needed for this one - it is the long building that runs down the airport, accessible via ladders from the tarmac.from this building you can cover the 3 helipads in the airport, as well as the area outside the terminal, where players respawn after dying. yiou can also (with a bit of skill) reach anyone in the entire airport, so long as they are in a vehicle (otherwise they'll be out of render distance)Access via the ladder to the low roof, just to the left of the heli in the pic, then follow the ladders up to the highest level

Blue - the Maze Bank arena. huge building, lots of long straights, this is the building from which i have taken out the majority of tanks. You also have a (limited) view of helicopters fighting over the airport, and it isnt too difficult to take out the pilots from here. no pic of this one, cos if you cant find the stadium, you're screwed anyway :p

Anyway, i know its a bit tl;dr, but it might be useful to some of you - it's earned my a fortune in bounties. As soon as i see someone with a bounty, I check the map, can see exactly what buildings cover the area they're in, fly over and take them out. Same goes for tanks

have fun :)

i like this guide....l think (just my opinion so feel free to ignore me) some ground level pics (snapmatic) of the sniping positions would also be really helpful addition, as its one thing marking it on a map,, its another identifying it from the sky/ground. :)

After looking, ground level shots are a bit useless - you'll never be approaching from the ground, and even though i use these buildings all the time, i dont recognise most of them from ground level. But i'm working on screenshots from the air, hope this will help :)

Snipings not really my game regardless of the game(I have old heavy thumbs). But this is one fine guide. The tips would work well in any game. +1 for you.

yea i had a feeling ground might not be the best after i posted it...

as a tip (if you dont have a driver yet) try calling a merryweather heli pickup, stick a waypoint on the building, when you get close snap a shot then move your waypoint to the next destination... probably best in daytime but thats how i snapped this..

Truly impressive work here man, I'm decent with the heavy sniper but still have a lot to learn in terms of patience and trigger finger control. This will be very useful to me. Thanks!

-EDIT- added pictures of the buildings. I don't have a capture card, so they're just camera phone shots, and as i'm at work, I'm playing on a small screen, so the pictures aren't great quality, but hopefully they will help!

I like using the Richard Majestic roof. It's hard for a tank to get too and you can snipe at all of the hot spots. The apartment buildings at the hill, LSC and the highways. You can even snipe people as they try to land on the maze bank. The best part is you are out of render view for most spots so people can't snipe you as easy unless they are with in a block of you. As long you keep an eye on your map they can't get you. It's best if you work in a group to cover most angles at once.

I unlocked the heavy sniper last night and it so much more fun. One shot kills on tank drivers. There were three guys with bounties in tanks and I was able to claim all three. They thought they got away when they got new tanks as they were terrorizing people at LSC got them there as well.

Nice one, i'll definitely try it out ;)

only a couple of ranks from the heavy sniper myself, can't wait to see the difference :D

didn't like Richards Majestic - the sight lines aren't too bad, and I LOVE that you can see the entrance to eclipse apts and tinsel towers, but if you jump down off the helipad onto the rooftop to snipe to the west, you cant climb back up to your chopper?

Yeah you can it's just a little tricky sometimes. Just run at it and hit the climb button. Or you can climb on the ledge and make your way around slowly.

Got called a glitcher last night cause I sniped a guy out of his pink Mini Cooper from the Richards Majestic. He was all the way by the golf course. He then got in his car and started heading towards the LSC and I got him again. He was so pissed and course I'm a pussy for sniping and I must be cheating. Him and his girl decided to go to the Airport to get a buzzard. The idiots talked about their plan over the mic so when he came my way I was ready. Sniped him out if the helicopter and he went crashing into the Maze Bank building. First time I've sniped a heli pilot, it was epic.

Sniping is the best thing in this game. I'm getting better and better at it. Got some poor bastard trying to get his car from the impound lot, from the very top of the hospital. Right before the gate slowly opened lol

That hospital is perfect for sniping out of. Very good protection and a very good hiding spot that is hidden. Plus 2 helipads.

Lately I've been texting everyone in the lobby calling them a name or getting them to come to the Richards Majestic. This usually causes a ground war around the building and it makes it easy for me to pick guys off when they are trying to shot someone else. The last time I played there were tanks, jets and helicopters all over the place, just total chaos.

personally i'm in two minds about the hospital - yes, it does have a couple of great sight lines: that area around the impound lot, and the multistory carpark next to it is amazing, especially when you have 3 or 4 guys battling it out down there.

The problem with the hospital roof is that the wall around it is so high that your 360 degree view is very restricted - once someone has gone around the side of the building, you cant hit them any more

Theres a few other places i know that are great for sniping.. Thanks for some more options :D

But il say this..

Multi level parking garages are great for sniping, especially tank sniping as it almost works as a bunker.

Great thread OP. My rule of thumb is that I won't attack unless provoked or defending a bounty. But great and well thought out my friend.

haha i love that tactic - today i was on the lombard bank building, and there were 6 guys fighting over 4 tanks on the beach xD

i was baiting them all, alternating between sending them texts, and sniping them out of their tanks - by the end of it i had all four tanks around the building trying to shoot me :p then they gave up and started coming after me in choppers, just kept picking them off they wouldnt learn!
