Names in GTA V that are real-world names

I just think this is interesting, considering so many things are changed like Los Santos instead of Los Angeles, Vinewood instead of Hollywood, FIB instead of FBI... So many names are changed or parodied, yet there are a few things, especially here in GTA V, that are the same as they are in reality.

These are the only ones I recognize so far, but I want to see if I have missed any:

-Pacific Ocean

-U.S. Army (when you fly over Fort Zancudo they say you are in U.S. Army airspace, IIRC)

-United States, not only relates to the "U.S." above, but I think Trevor at some point refers to the United States (of America?) in the game dialogue. Perhaps someone even refers to America? Maybe Trevor actually refers to "The American Dream." I forget the specifics, I need help on this one.

-Lazlow (granted, he is also a writer and producer who contributes to GTA games)

When I thought of this thread this morning, I swore I had more examples... Please add anything I have missed!

Michael Townley. That's the name of someone who is/was in the witness protection program.

Hence, where Michael got his name from :p

Gauntlet Hair

I've thought about this as well. Not only names of places and people, but minor things too - many of the songs featured in the games include references to various consumables and vehicles and locations. Hollywood, Spyker cars, and Miami are some of the ones off the top of my head.

OT: I keep thinking I've heard "Raton Canyon" in real life aswell outside of GTA 5.

There is no Raton Canyon in real life, but there is an Eaton Canyon:

Interesting, had to look him up (but then I noticed someone else already posted the link, oops)

I just noticed that Michael De Santa in GTA was formerly Michael Townley, now I see why the name was familiar. Interesting how they did that.

Thanks

Maybe you're thinking of Boca Raton, Florida?

I'm not sure what mission but I definitely heard a mistake when one of the characters mentioned Los Angeles instead of Los Santos, think it was a taxi mission.

United States of America, USA, America etc. has been said through out the various games, that isn't new. The game does take place in the USA.

Canada is mentioned in game. Trevor is possibly from there, but that fact is ambigulous, he could have been lying.

I always thought them not renaming the Pacific Ocean was kind of weird. I suppose its no more weird than keeping the name "United States".

Yeah, I wasn't certain about the older games, but I did think the US had been mentioned before. Thanks for clarifying.

Also yes, Canada was the other thing I had in mind this morning, I knew I was missing something!

The only weird part is that it appears as a location onscreen when you fly over it. I expect fake names to pop up down there, not one so familiar... So yeah that was actually the main reason I created this entire topic, because of the Pacific Ocean.

There really is a barbers called Herr Kutz.

Apologies for the Daily Mail link: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2541390/Church-organist-fuming-claiming-makers-violent-video-game-stole-BARBERS-SHOP-Herr-Kutz.html

Hairdresser fuming after claiming makers of Grand Theft Auto V stole the name of his barber's shop Herr Kutz.

Phil Collins

Kenny Loggins

Pam Grier

All of the DJs use their real names.

Signatures are dumb anyway.

Mexico is mentioned a few times by Martin Madrazo and it's also written in a few mission descriptions for Online, which I found odd because I thought R*'s Mexico was Texico?

In the Tongva Valley off to the side of the road, there's one of those information signs that you would typically see near a hiking trail. If you get up close to the sign to read what it says, you will see that it actually says Topanga Valley, implying that this area of the map is based off of the real life Topanga Canyon.

Things aren't changed. Los Santos isn't Los Angeles. It's a fictitious town based on Los Angeles.

Vinewood isn't Hollywood, it's based on Hollywood.

So it's Hollywood, Vinewood and Pacific Ocean, not Vinewood and Pacific Ocean.

OP isn't talking about their parody names for stuff, which is used A LOT. Some more subtle than others. (i.e, it took me way too long to find out Dukes was obviously Queens in GTA IV. Sorry, not that familiar with NY). This thread is about R* somehow forgetting/ignoring parody, and using reallife names for the same reallife stuff.

The most obvious one is the radio. Pretty much all songs and artists are unedited (although there are some songs in the past which were edited, e.g. LA was changed to LS, California changed to San Andreas). Rihanna get's quite a few mentions, so do other artists. Also, the USA, Canada, Mexico, Italy, Eastern-European and other countries are mentioned. I think R* just makes their cities/states a parody, but they are somehow related to the real world. If they'd to make parodies of Canada, Russia etc. it would turn out to be a complicated, hard-to-follow pile of crap.

I'm actually having a hard time trying to come up with something that isn't already mentioned. I'm still not sure if the reallife cross-overs are entertaining or story-breaking.

GTA's U.S.A is a Parody of the Real thing, except London which was a setting for GTA London 1969 back in 1999 was the only real setting in the Series but China (mention by Trevor) and Canada, Mexico,Eastern Europe etc also exist in the GTA Multiverse.

GTA games are set in United States of America, and for that they use the real name. Also in Vice City congressman Shrub (if I got the name spelling right) mentioned Vice City is in Florida. Which probably means at that time they didn't think they'll change the names of states like they did later when they made San Andreas.

Also, sometimes other countries are mentioned and they seem to keep all their real life info. So the best explanation is that they have changed SOME things from USA, such as cities and in case of California also the name of the state, while everything else is simply real world.

Think of it as real world where we just replace a few USA cities with GTA cities.
