My car:

---------

Wow! Matching cars! Small world :)

But when I can legally drive in 3 years and 5 months, I'll be in the cheapest Japanese car I can find. My dad and I have been looking, and for me and my siblings to share, he suggested a 2002ish Honda Civic 3dr Hatchback (UK Spec).

It looks like a nice car, but when I scrape together money for my own car, I really really really want an EG Civic.

Cheap: check

Japanese: check

Reliable: check

Efficient: check

Look at (Toyota)Tercels/Corsas

Yea they're not powerful, they're FF, and they may not be as "cool" as Civics but they are small and fun.

Some people even drop 4E turbos in them to chomp Civics  LOL

These Japanese built cars run FOREVER

And those Civics are expensive and finding one that hasn't been molested is hard.

Nah, you'll find good 02 Civic's here in great condition. And if it needs work, so what? A little bit of fun :)

Those Tercels and Corsa's look nice, but we don't have Tercel's and the only Corsa here is a Vauxhall Corsa.

A Corolla would be nice though.

Or get a nissan march super turbo or starlet gt turbo.

Yep Starlets are like hatchback Tercels LOL

And the turbo ones are really cool with the same 4E turbo engines, probably rare though.

We have Starlets, I like em too. We also have Micra's, or the March as you know them.

Nissan's new Pulsar that's coming out looks nice. The old Pulsar's (AKA Sunny's) here are used as pizza delivery cars.

My whip/ride.

Capture2_zpsb1c9bee0.jpg

(Yes, I'm sure this was done in one of the previous 3,547 posts but I speak troofs).

Isn't that a train from Chicago?

You would be correct. The CTA Brown Line. My only whip at the moment since having a car in the city is a bit expensive.

When I get my driving's license and enough money, I'll be jonesing for either a 1980's Cadillac or a 1980's Lincoln Town Car.

What are the import rules for Canada, like I'm not even sure how there are some r34s in Canada when it's like illegal in the states

In Canada, imported cars that are 15 years or older are not regulated by the Motor Vehicle Safety Act. In the US, I believe cars have to be 25 years or older to have to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards. So, older R34s are fair game to import into Canada and I'm definitely seeing more of them being posted on Kijiji (free local classifieds website, not sure if you have it in US).

Now's your last chance then. The 99 skylines are already 15 years old and they're just gonna increase in value cause no one can soon import them anymore.

*DISCLAIMER: If properly maintained. It's a common myth that Toyotas are bullet proof, until you learn the true reason why so many of them last longer than a lot of cars - not doing regular maintenance voids the warranty. That gives owners reason to do their maintenance, and once they're on the maintenance schedule, they usually keep it up after the warranty runs out.

Take another car company, say, Chrysler, and your warranty is your warranty so long as you don't install aftermarket engine or chassis parts. You can skip your oil changes altogether and if you engine seizes within the warranty period, it's covered. And you know people are lazy, they'll only do something is they HAVE to. That's why manufacturers started including Oil Life Monitors in cars, to try and mitigate the number of warranty claims on engine failures due to lack of maintenance. General Motors is now required GM technicians to record the oil life percentage whenever changing the oil on a car while it's under warranty, so that if the engine fails due to lack of routine oil changes, they can deny the warranty claim with proof.

The reason I'm saying all of this is because number one, I am a mechanic and I know what causes cars to last or to not last - and it's almost ALWAYS lack of maintenance that causes them to break down. I've seen American cars reach 300,000 miles with no MAJOR repairs, thanks to prompt maintenance. I've seen Japanese cars burn of piston rings or blow head gaskets because they weren't taken care of.

You can't buy into the myth that Japanese cars are just these miracles of engineering that run forever. They're not. They're well built cars, yet, BUT if you don't take care of them, they will not last. On the flip side, if you DO take care of the majority of American cars, be it a Cavalier, Cobalt, whatever, it WILL last a very long time. It's just that most people don't because they're lazy. I used to have to beg my old roommate to get her oil changed on her 98 Blazer. She'd go 5,000 miles past due, oil was blacker than black and a little goopy, and guess what? It broke down one day, and she said she'd never buy a Chevy again. Yeah, it was Chevrolet's fault her engine spun a rod bearing because of lack of oil changes.

ANYWAY, back on topic:

Closest thing to my Cutlass is the Sabre Turbo, but they're of two different generations.

1-4.jpg?t=1280175859

They also don't have a good version of my Cherokee. They have something that resembles the Grand Cherokee (Canis Seminole) and a few other boxy looking 4x4's that resemble other vehicles, but nothing that does the Cherokee justice. I'd LOVE to see a 4 door Cherokee represented in GTAV, but unfortunately I think there are enough other 4x4 options that it's just not necessary.

I was talking about specifically those Tercels because they are bone bare apart from AC in SOME of the cars, there is little to go wrong. But I guess I'm a little biased towards Jap cars because I grew up in toyotas.

But I still stick to the notion that Japanese cars are better engineered, for example, the layout of the engine bay, you don't hVe to dig for two hours to get to an air filter etc...

And there's a lot to go wrong other than just a oil change, filter, air filter can prevent. But I agree they do play a huge role if they are not done.

Man this Is impossible to do on your phone.

Never enough 4x4 options, nothing against Jeep based designs but as someone with 2 small mildly built SUVs (2nd gen s-series Blazer and a 1st gen Pathfinder [true 1st gen 2 door]) it would be nice seeing other based smaller 4x's get some attention. Hell, even an XJ based truck could work, they are boxy and small enough for people with other small boxy ones to pretend and say 'close enough'.

An S series Blazer would be cool. One of the Monster Trucks from San Andreas was basically an S10.

Hell I think it'd be awesome if we could get a version of the Rancher all jacked up on 33" tires with an open back end, like the old K5 Blazer.

Take this:

And turn it into this:

These are the wheels just after a refurb, 9.5" rears!

The badges are proper gloss black plastic to match the rest of the trim, not sprayed or dipped.

It is thought to be the only red 330d M Sport Touring in red in the whole of the UK, it was special ordered from new :D

Not daily drivers, but a couple fun vehicles.... Disney09-2002.jpg 20140405_164856.jpg

The Toyota is a 1993 with a 22re/ 5 speed combo that I swapped a solid front axle under and added dual transfer cases to. The camaro is a 1988 with a zz4 crate engine and a built 700r4 that is actually for sale right now. After its sold, I'm on the hunt for a buick grand national!

Way to lazy to quote the numerous conversations going on.

The laws in Canada have changed for the regulation from 15 to 20 years. I recently attempted to legally install a straight back exhaust on one of my cars and was refused at a few places due to the regulations. So no R34 for another few years.

The reason why the R34 is not easily importated as say a RHD S14/15, Integra/civic/accord is due to the north American safety regulations. In Canada moreso. I believe it's a result of the front bumper having a high enough impact rating. In certain states in the Us your able to modify the vehicle to the standards. However in Canada any vehicle cannot be upgraded to a pass.

As for reliable cars.

I've owned a 2002 Acura 1.7(see fancy Honda Civic) for nearly 10 years now.

260,000 km

I got her at 120,000km.

It was previously owned by a Teenage Girl.

It required a bit of transmission work.(Mt, Poor girl grinned those gears.)

Total spent on repairs+purchase:$6000

The car has been driven hard at times, but I know how to drive, and I've had the fluids changed religiously. I've never had a problem with it mechanically since I bought it. Original Clutch too!

This is my `97 GTI VR6 Drivers Edition. I had it for 11 years and it treated me far better than I it. Increasing mechanical issues forced a trade but its overall reliability and how, even with its issues, fun it was to drive infected me with the GTI bug for life.

This is my `11 GTI 2.0T that I traded the old one for yesterday. One of the very few brand loyalties I have.

My main ride is a 2014 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport AWD, with a 2.0 litre turbo GDI engine.

Our secondary car is actually a 1999 Tercel, I bought it used 8 years ago and it's only got 187,000kms on it (not sure the miles conversion). Excellent little car and worth every penny I paid for it considering the only thing I've had go wrong with it in 8 years was a busted brake line. They don't make them like they used to!
