I'm German/Mexican, & have been using the word "nigga" for about 25 years. (blame NWA)

it all matters the way you say the word, not the word itself.

Language is a living thing, constantly changing, growing and evolving. "Nigga" is not a racist slur, no matter how much you may insist or desire it to be. It's meaning in modern urban and popular culture has shifted to a casual acknowledgment of friendship. It's basically the " dude" or " bro" for certain demographics, and that's fine. To say that no matter the context or situation it is racist is hilariously misguided and an interesting bit of lingual fascism. Obviously some use it because it's the vernacular of their culture, and others because they hear the cool guys on television using it or hear it dropped in the modern mistral show that is mainstream rap music, but either way theres no malice involved beyond the bit imagined by some of the contributors to this thread.

Yes there are times in a certain context between friends were the word "nigga" is perfectly acceptable. But the majority of the time most people would refrain from using it. Would you walk up to a stranger and say "what's up my nigga?". I highly doubt it. Would you say to the person interviewing you for a job "I was hangin with my niggas"? Again, I doubt it. I look at being on XBL the same way. I don't know who else is in the session; male/female, age, race, gender preference, religious preference. I think it is stupid to use such loaded words and I try to keep in mind how others will stereotype me for using them. Just the way I will stereotype others for using them. Especially in the context of XBL, I hear you use certain words, I'm going to make snap judgments since I can't tell your age, race, etc just from your voice. I hear you say "nigga" I'm going to write you off as racist, ignorant, low class, etc.

This, I don't like when I hear the term "White boy" (Mostly used by Blacks when calling out a white person.) and i'm not white. I'm Latino. but I don't let it get to my nerves or wear me down. Obviously a time and place for everything. No, you wouldn't use it in a professional setting, but a more casual one it may be fine. I grew up in the soundview area of the Bronx in NYC, at a time when violence and crime were at an all time high since it was just before Guliani cleaned up the streets. I've heard Nigga everyday of my life for as long as I can remember in the neighborhood I grew up in, whether it be friends greeting each other or the guy at the register is the corner store talking to a customer. All of this is fine and offends no one. Ive used the word in conversation with friends, it's a cultural thing ( I'm puerto rican, not black by the way).

 

I also have have two degrees which I worked me ass off to get simultaneously and a decent job that allowed me to move my mother to a nicer neighborhood and myself into manhattan.

 

If you would make a snap judgement about my or anyone elses social, economic, or intellectual standing from the use of a word then it says alot more about your snap judgments then their language choice.

I'm white myself but grew up in a mixed neighborhood where I heard nigga used of a daily basis from generations of black people. It's not a racist term when used by black people towards other black people. If you have ever been in a hood you will see Mexicans calling black people niggas on a daily basis and nothing is thought about it. I myself have a few black friends who I can openly use the word with because they know what it means and know I'm not racist because I'm their nigga and have proven it to them.

For f*ck's sake you're wrong as hell. I've got a black friend from College and I would never imagine myself, or anyone else we know, saying that to him, because I genuinely respect him and he doesn't tolerate the use of that word from anyone outside his circle, or anyone he knows who isn't the same colour as him. He's actually been victimised for his colour and had white kids call him 'ni**er', it's f*cking disheartening to read about that. He's successful, but the fact people still live in the f*cking past and still haven't realised it's a racist term is disgusting.

 

If it's used in the same context as 'dude', it's between black people who use the word mutually, not white people who think it's cool to use a racist slur for the sake of speaking to each other. It's a very powerful word as it's derivative of 'negro', a term that fell out after the civil rights movement due to it being associated with the oppression black people suffered long ago, hence it's not a good word.
