How To Play Darts

As a darts fan, one of the the most frustrating things in GTA Online for me is the number of people who accept darts invitations who clearly have no idea how to play the game. Pretty much every random player who joins an invitational ends up quitting after 1 or 2 turns because they join without prior knowledge of the game and then struggle to grasp the basics.

Here's a few guidelines, in case you feel like joining a darts match:

The Throw Off

Every darts match starts with a throw off. That means each player takes one throw and the one which lands closest to the bull (the bullseye, the red inner part of the circle in the centre) takes the first turn in the match proper. This is important as darts is all about getting your score down to zero fastest, so the first turn gives you an advantage in the opening round.

301 Darts

In GTA darts you start each leg with a total of 301 points and your aim is to get that down to zero, by taking turns to throw 3 darts at a time at the board. That means you start with a score of 301 points and you get that down to zero by hitting sections of the board and the points for each section is deducted from your total. Each section is 1/20th of the circle with smaller subsections multiplying that section's score by double (the outer ring) and treble (the inner ring).

The only rule thereafter is that you have to end your turn by scoring a double (an outer ring score.) Anything else will see you go bust and have to take your turn again.

Legs and Sets

Each game of darts is made up or a number of sets, which in itself is made of a number of legs. Both operate on a "best of" policy. So if you play a 3 legged set, the first person to win 2 legs wins that set. And a 3 set match will be won by the first person to win 2 sets.

The 6 Dart Finish

As GTA operates on a 301 score, the fastest way to win a leg is within 6 darts. If you win the throw off then you can win the leg within 2 turns without giving your opponent a chance.

Hopefully other darts fans will add anything I've missed or correct anything I've gotten wrong. :colgate:

I feel the same way OP, beating kids who have no idea how to play sucks.

Tbph, R* should have brought back bowling instead of darts.

If it could be substituted for a previous minigame, I'd have liked pool instead.

And in my experience I don't usually get the chance to beat anyone as I like to play a best of 3, so the usually quit after the first set (if not leg.) It wouldn't be such a big deal if it weren't for the fact that it goes down as a loss on my record!

Well I haven't tested this out but I checked my record before a match and it was something like Won 10 Lost 6, despite me only losing one match proper. So I assumed that the other losses were made up of quitters as it tied in with the number of randoms I'm played at the time (who had all quit.)

Biohazard Abyss

Darts isn't really fun though. It's way too easy, they only made it a little less easy than GTAIV.

It's better than Tennis though.

Golf is the best :)

I enjoy golf too, I've only played it a few times though as it's even more upsetting when you've been playing for half an hour only for your opponent to quit at the start of the 9th hole!

I just checked my social club and I'm 7 for 7 in darts apparently, even though I've only lost 2 actual matches. And it's given me 1 six dart finish even though I got 4 in my last match only for my opponent to quit.

Maybe GTAForum darts/golf clubs would be best for people who actually like the sports. Although it might be tricky to manage what with the first come first served nature of the invite system.

Good idea, you should start a sports club, I'll join

I love Darts. Too bad it's getting harder, and harder to find people to join, let alone staying through the whole game. Same with Tennis, and Golf. It's amazing how so many people can't play these right, even though they are quite simple, and really fun when you get the hang of it.

I like playing it. What I don't like is after finishing a game and the other player kills you or destroys you're PV.

GO TO A REAL BAR (or friend's basement if you aren't old enough to drink).

PLAY REAL DARTS!

What a horribly waste of coding space.

Very useful topic .... I as well have been frustrated by people quitting, or simply throwing at the bull for the entire match.

Would love to see Cricket added as a game choice.

I enjoy darts but no one ever invites. If only Bowling, Pool and Arcade were in the game tho.

Ah, my first six darter against a random. Started off with a 140, then hit treble twenty, treble seventeen, and bull to finish. They quit, of course, but I was so happy I didn't care.
