From Karin's luxury line while retaining a sporty character, the Sultan never really did make sense for either demographic it tried to appeal to, and though sales were stronger in the States than in Europe, the Sultan, in its short time, failed to live up to Karin's expectations. In the end, Sultans wound up as rentals, second-hands, and junkers faster than they should have. You couldn't go a few blocks in Liberty City without finding one, panels all smashed in, plastic in the windows, covered in dirt, even back in '02. These things were dime-a-dozen, who cared? In the end, somebody did, and it might have even been the nature of this sport-sedan's demise that fueled its rebirth. Around 2005, Sultans started cropping up in street racing communities and amateur custom circles all around America, and the car gained a cult following. I busted probably fifty racers in these things in Liberty from '04 to '06, saw first-hand a lot of the modifications those guys were starting to make. Splitters, canards, spoilers, twin-turbo, stripped interiors, anything to make this sedan into a race killer. Shops started chopping the bodies down to just two doors soon enough, and, with parts from the Japanese street racing scene started flooding in, the Sultan was transformed. Nothing could catch even a decent racer in a well-built RS, no Pegassi or Grotti or Coquette had the same handling and take-off. Can't say how many races we simply cleaned up after once the Sultan RS was on the scene. If we caught one, it was ripped in half at its seam, shredded across a storefront in Hove Beach, driver in a million little pieces. The Sultan went from peasant to king, and even had us in the department in awe. So, here's mine. It started out as a 2004 sedan. While the Emperor was in the shop in '06, I had to get a rental. They gave me this silver-grey Sultan, and though it didn't look like much, it really did win me over in the few weeks I was stuck with it. I bought it off the JiffiRent lot and had it cleaned up when the Emperor was back in order, and it's been a project ever since. When Benny's reopened a while back, I figured I'd finally go ahead and give it the full service, and here it is today, just like one of the ones I busted back in LC. What goes around comes around, I guess, and boy does it go fast. Zero-to-sixty in about two seconds, goosebumps in zero. If the Sultan is, like an associate of mine says, my mid-life crisis, I'd say I've done pretty well. More images in the spoiler below, as always. There's waaaaaay too many. Of course I also have a Subaru WRC lookalike but there's a million of those out there.
