profile viewing a question! privacy concern

OK so you can spank me hard for taking the admiral seriously but her/his topic brought a few questions into my head.

 

1st off I don't have a problem with registered members viewing my profile I see it as a compliment someone took the time to view it.

 

but the main question and worry raised through that topic for me was the fact it was reported that users can log out and still view profiles. That means that any one from the Internet unregistered or otherwise can view the profiles witch to me sounds a little bit cagey.

 

I know the easiest thing to say is don't put down any information you don't want to share, but the info I put on there is info I wish to share with gtafers. I'm not comfortable or understanding why in this age of data accumulation the whole internet needs access to our profiles aswell?

 

I beleive this requires some consideration about turning off the ability for non gtafers to view profiles without registering!

I didn't know about that either.

 

I am pretty sure mods are dealing with that. I don't really think the "Guests" will mind your profile unless you are some popular dude.

 

They don't know who you really are, unless you state it of course. It's no use keeping track on members unless of course, somebody's trying to hack you.

Seriously though. I am not sure, maybe it'd be nice to restrict guests. I also found out you can view your last 4 posts as a guest too.

Up until this point i have always assumed that our profiles are only viewable by gtafers!

 

Some of the info shared on my profile all though not complete could be targeted by an Internet bot or something hoovering up details.

 

When a company has a database it's kept under lock and key to outsiders unless the company decides to sell it to another company or it gets hacked.

 

My main question is to the mods and I would like to know the reason why outsiders need to be able to view our profile?

Wow, don't scare me with those kinds of conspiracy plots. Who the hell will benifit with your information anyways? I have never heard cases where people in forums have been targeted by some companies.

 

You are not living in the high road, bro. Stop being paranoid. Mods will take care about this issue soon. They already have plenty of things to sort out.

It's not a conspiracy or paranoia it's a genuine question!

And I notice it's obviously a question you cannot answer! Forgive me but I will wait for the mods to reply to my main question in my second post.

 

After that I would like to know if they plan on disallowing guest's to view profiles? if not then I wish to update my profile accordingly!

It's a setting in the ACP, it can be disabled whenever the Admins please. Personally I don't see the harm and see it as an issue as we've been using the new version since September and it hasn't really been a concern for anyone else.

 

This isn't Facebook or anything, I believe these restrictions were placed initially so members sign up and get access to membership features. I'm not sure how your GTAF profile being seen by guests could be a problem.

 

Maybe a setting could be implemented where YOU decide if guests can view your account or not although I have no idea how this could be implemented.

The main thing is I have some personal details on there some of witch I only desire to share with gtafers!

 

I updated my profile to include these details because I wanted you'll to know a bit about me because I like the community and figured after 4 years of coming here I would be sticking around.

 

I don't however like the fact any old Joe can view my profile without even registering.

 

So yeah thanks shoumic but my questions still remain.

 

Why do guests need to view our profiles?

I'm glad you saw the point/value in it and did what was intended - Think about the situation and your concerns with it!

 

It is certainly true that most forums require you to log in to view a profile. I'm not sure why that particular course of action has not been taken here because it is a simple forum setting.

 

I don't have an answer to your question, but I would assume that it is someone just forgot to set it and no one thought about it.

This is a gaming forum and not every thing you share on profile needs to be beyond games or interests related to gaming.

In which case, if any one who views your profile, what will happen?

The profile lists perfect fields limited to forums nature and no extra crap like other social networking profiles.

Simple and to the point.

That was disabled before, so presumably it being on was an oversight. I've gone ahead and turned off the feature for guests until/unless someone else comes along and tells me doing so breaks something else.
