I think they did have street level thugs since they waved their gun around when they heard gunshot nearby .

The Russian Bratva did have a full group of street level thugs. The Italians weren't as detailed, but they still had some members that were somewhat more street level than the popular "suit wearing gentleman with a gun".

The Russian Mafia is split into two groups in the game - "Russian Mob" and "Russian Gang". Both appear as one gang in the storyline, but in the files, they're two different gangs. Members of the "Mob" faction don't abuse drugs, and don't carry heavy weapons such as shotguns and assault rifles, as opposed to the "Gang" faction, which is, as you mentioned, consisted of street level thugs rather than typical mobsters.

By the way, not all gang members have the same rank in GTA IV. Gang members whose file names end with "hi_01/02..." are considered to be more high-ranking than those whose file names end with "lo_01/02...". There are some exceptions, though, as voice lines are relevant too. As an example, most of the Albanian gangsters have voice lines under the name of "ALBANIAN_THUGS", but some of them, whose file names end with "lo_03" nonetheless, have voice lines under the name of "ALBANIAN_HEAVIES", which most likely makes them more high-ranking (even their appearances suggest that).

Oh , you're right . Now , i remembered you'd mentioned me this before . In Payback mission , during the shootout with the Pavano , i saw some Irish guys and i wondered if the Pavano also used the Irish as hired muscles .

Gang members can attack the player even without physically provoking them. Simply hanging around a gang member leads him to hassle you and ask you to leave the neighborhood. He'll be following you for a while to make sure that you're leaving, and will attack if you don't.

So, this might've been mentioned before, but the point that I want to clear out here: this doesn't happen in the very beginning of the game, and that's probably a reason why some people think that this is false. Gang hostility is activated at some point not too far away from the beginning (most likely after Bleed Out). Does it depend on which gang Niko pissed off in the story? No, not at all. As the game starts, gangs are neutral, attacking only when physically provoked (including just bumping into them without picking a fight first), but at some point, all gangs change to be more hostile (properly violent towards the player).

Gangs are actually set to "dislike" (hassle on sight, without the need to provoke them or even hang around them) the player depending on his canon relationship with them in the story in the game's scripts.

There are two reasons that it doesn't work this way in-game, though:

  • This action gets overwritten by the "gang hassling" code, which makes every gang in the game (minus friendly ones) hassle the player when he hangs around them for a while.
  • In order to get the "dislike" acquaintance to work properly, a ped type (gangs in this case) must have the "hate" acquaintance activated towards at least one other ped type.

Additionally, as long as the "dislike" acquaintance is properly activated, the gang hassles option must be disabled. Otherwise, the game will crash whenever the "dislike" acquaintance loads.

There are special mailman peds who have scheduled routes where they deliver mail in the entire borough (or is it the entire city?) . Just learnt about this recently and thought it was quite neat.

I wish there was a tried and tested way to find them, I haven't seen one for months. I know it was mentioned here recently that the garbage trucks are on a specific weekly schedule, appearing only in the early hours of Tuesdays and Fridays (which is really awesome, when I see them now I'm like oh it must be Tuesday or Friday and if I check the protagonist's phone sure enough it is). I wonder if there's any schedule for the mailmen as well or if they're just random.

My favourite thing about them is if you fight them all their taunts are mail related puns lol

There's a ped for female Ruff Riders in The Lost and Damned, but it wasn't used in the final release. One of the two torso models suggests that some of them would act as strippers for the gang, which would also suggest that R* intended to create an interior for their clubhouse, but for some reason scrapped the idea.

If you wait for a while before getting inside the Sprunk factory in the mission Trespass, you would see a Russian mobster who seems to come from somewhere nearby in Tudor - talking on phone while walking his way to the factory.

Yeah, you're actually right! That's her.

She didn't appear in streets, though. But I guess I get why. That's because both female Uptown Rider gangsters and strippers share the same ped files, which would make it look weird to see a bunch of Uptown Rider strippers all over Northwood and North Holland, rather than in the (unmade, most likely anyway) Uptown Riders' clubhouse interior.

Hmm that's a stretch I think. It's just part of a running joke of Niko's friends calling him to hang out when he's busy doing something heinous. Jacob also calls asking Niko if he wants to go out to eat while he's busy transporting dead bodies in his trunk, Brucie calls to invite Niko to a strip club when he's on his way to shoot one up, Roman calls asking to go for a drink when Niko's busy driving a truck rigged with explosives etc. The friend who's calling isn't suggested to be linked to what Niko is doing.

I love those calls lol. The irony.:D

Another one is during "Shadow" when Niko's tailing the drug dealer and Roman rings him up wanting to play pool (but not bowling:O) and Niko's trying to whisper that he has a another "shooting" going on.

Just NOW realized you can actually use a cable car in GTA 4. I was looking at the cover and thought "Huh, was the cable car cut content or something? I don't remember ever seeing it in the game."

I can't tell if it's a really cool hidden feature or it's something I was oblivious to. Well, it's also not marked on the map so...

You can also go up the steps that lead to the walkway on the side of the Algonquin Bridge next to where the cable cars leave from on the Algonquin side, climb on top of the stone pillars structure directly under the cables, and get hit by one :D. Sometimes you get killed on impact, sometimes you get knocked off and either die or survive depending on your health. Can even bring a friend, get in a fight with a ped or get the cops after you and lead them up there to get knocked off.

To be fair it's completely understandable how it could be overlooked. I've played GTA IV so many times and I think I've only used the cable car once or twice. i just see it as an environmental asset a bit like the binoculars that isn't particularly useful, but makes the city feel more authentic and interactive.

Yeah! Someone has probably mentioned already that if you're close to the drug deal er when it happens, it'll alert him and he'll realize he's being followed.

What makes it funny is that Niko gets pissed and yells at Roman on the phone! 😂

I can't remember if the dealer gets spooked if he hears your phone ring nearby, or if it's when Niko answers the call he gets spooked...

So... it wasn't cut after all? All these years, man! I'm wondering how many more things I would find out about the game 😜.

It's a shame you can't move around in the cable cars as appears possible on the cover lol. Also wish there was a way to get on top of one but I don't think there is, although I have managed to get on top of the wire (by landing on the roof of where the cable cars depart from with a helicopter) and tightrope walk all the way across. Not exactly a useful feature but I love it as a little extra detail. It's a novel way of travelling to and from Colony Island, on the rare occasions I have a reason to go there I like to use it.

Edit: For anyone who hasn't seen it, look at this nice scenic ride

Also if anyone wants to get smashed into by one go up the steps on the side of the bridge shown in front of Niko at 0:20 and hop on the stone structure with pillars on the right of the screen. They don't hurt you if you stand in the space where they come to rest at the end of the ride btw, they just gently push you back and there's enough space behind them that you don't get crushed.

HOW'S ANNIE?
Posted (edited)

It's something I've picked up before but honestly I don't think I've ever seen anyone make the connection. Look at all the Messina Family members profiles on the LCPD database. Then compare them to the Pegerino Family we got in-game.

Ray Boccino and Mark Volpe: both good earners for the family, both heavily (and wrongly) suspected of being a rat by the boss.

Phil Bell and Harry Hall: both maintain a close and trustung relationship with the boss, however unable to live up to their potential due to their Irish heritage.

Jimmy Pegerino and Harvey Noto: obviously both are massivley paranoid mob bosses being targeted specifically by the cops.

Fredo Volpe and Anthony: weakest connection here. Fredo is a brother of a high-ranking member, Anthony being Jimmys adopted "son" so to speak. Both seem to be long-time snitches.

I've got a hunch these were early concepts/codenames used on casting calls for IV. And later on Rockstar re-used and slightly altered them to expand to the in-game world. It seems like a bit of a coincidence. Either that or they got a bit sloppy when writing characters for the database.

Just barely learned today that the only time cops ever drop money is if you kill them right after they finish using an ATM.

Yeah I always assumed a mission was going to take place in a cable car, or at the very least a cutscene. From what I can see it looks like Niko fighting someone. That would've been nice to see.

I wanted to check out something related to the wanted level system in Grand Theft Auto IV.

I had one star and I decided to hide in an alley... So, I've hidden in some long alley, behind some wall. Cops arrived... they were walking around my vehicle, which I've left nearby. Then one cop decided to check the alley... He walked in, looked around and... left. I was in this alley for at least... umm... 5 minutes - they didn't bother to check the whole alley, just some parts of it.

Then, finally, after at least 5 minutes one cop decided to check behind that wall where I was. He arrested me.

So... the wanted level system in Grand Theft Auto IV is very interesting - you can actually hide and they won't know where you are.

Additionally, as long as the "dislike" acquaintance is properly activated, the gang hassles option must be disabled. Otherwise, the game will crash whenever the "dislike" acquaintance loads.

I'd like to add:

Without a "hate" acquaintance being assigned to a gang's list of relationships, the "dislike" acquaintance will still work partly, but only when the gang member is already provoked.

You can notice that in your GTA IV/TLAD game even without being modded. Just try to get a ped to hit (or a vehicle to bump into) an Albanian mobster after Bleed Out, Russian after Russian Revolution, a Lost biker after No Way On The Subway, a Korean after Dining Out, or an Angel of Death biker/Triad after Clean And Serene/This Sh*t's Cursed in TLAD. He will attack him back, but sometimes will also attack you when he beats the other NPC and/or when you get close enough to him.

HOW'S ANNIE?

I only just discovered the other day that Johnny and Luis also have unique dialogue for the helitours (I only ever did them in the vanilla game). Such a niche little feature in Niko's story, I'm surprised they went to the effort to record all those just for the two DLCs, considering when getting into a cab Johnny and Luis never specific streets like Niko does.

Holy hell did I have a laugh at the way Johnny bags out the pilot 😂
