Cool Things You Didn't Know About GTA IV

Literally just did the knife Goldberg method and walked out the long way down the stairs. It was actually a lot more in character for Niko, Goldberg even makes a hunting knife joke when you pull it out.

Every time I tried to knife him and walk out, the secretary either walked in and found me standing over his body, or walked into his office and found him dead as I was walking down the hallway to leave. Either way, any time I tried to casually walk out right past everyone resulted in a wanted level before I was halfway to the door. That's why I always use the window. I also like to park my car at the curb right outside that window, so  I can jog down the set of steps and straight to it instead of having to go back up the sidewalk to it.

Any time I can do a Hitman style silent assassin kill, I do it. For example, that one guy Francis sends you to kill in those projects (I forget his name, but he's the one you can kill or let live), I snipe him from the crane across the street. And the Fixer mission that has you kill those guys behind the Police station near the prison, a well aimed grenade tossed from behind the wall on the opposite side of the alley from the station will land right in the middle of those guys and take them all out (not exactly silent assassin, but it's quick and brutal, and you don't have to chase anyone down).

Didn't really know about this since I skip taxi rides 99% of the time, but taxi drivers can somewhat interact with Niko. I know one of them said something among the lines of "This traffic's a nightmare today! I'll try to get around it." when I was playing yesterday

Only noticed the other day that at Roman's Cab Depot there's other taxi drivers working there, you see them coming and going in the cabs and also opening the hoods and fixing them.

In Jeff's first encounter you can ignore his instructions to photograph the wife and go right to killing her. If you kill her it doesn't fail the mission and you don't get another chance at it, instead Niko just calls Jeff to tell him she's dead and then you're done with him and don't get the other encounters.

It wouldn't hurt Mohammed to do that every now and then.😛

I have to admit though it feels very out of character for Niko to do that. He's obviously not too comfortable tailing her so killing her in cold blood for no reason feels odd however I do like how far reaching GTA IV's "freedom" goes even into the random character missions.

Also just incase you didn't know now we're on it with regards to the second encounter outside of the garage there's always a cop car waiting where the GPS points you, but if you turn the other way and want to avoid a wanted level most of the time you can avoid the cops, but this is more luck than anything since sometimes cop cars still spawn.

It's the method I use most of the time and it works.

I feel like it's kind of punishing your for killing her by unexpectedly allowing it and not giving you the following encounters at least. It is out of character really but I like the surprise of it. It's always funny when they write in fail cutscenes/phone calls for Niko going crazy and randomly killing people while keeping it as much in character as they can (eg in Ransom if you kill Gordon or Gracie when all you had to do was take her picture lol), it's a twist on that I guess.

Oh yes I know that one, sometimes I go the police way anyway for the challenge 😛. It was a genuinely shocking moment the first time I saw the wife in the car omg

Actually that's a good point. I remember the first time I done that and thought "I'll probably just fail it", but it didn't. I don't know if it was R*'s way of punishing the player for doing that or just a slight oversight, but it felt weird killing her and nothing happening.

Like an inadvertent story choice or something like that.

Yeah I like to try killing everyone/failing missions in every way to see the resulting cutscenes/phone calls. The amount of different ones is incredible. Means they can really get you with the little trick in Jeff's encounter haha. It could be deliberate (since it has a unique phone call, and they do like to tug at your conscience in the game as well as offer alternative choices sometimes) but not sure how much or little thought went into it.

That just reminded me of how if you kill the woman in the Russian Shop (or other clothes shop workers I assume) a message pops up saying "You cannot buy clothes if there is nobody alive to man the cash register. Control yourself". I felt bad lol

There's an enterable Sex Shop in Star Junction. Couldn't find any info about it on the Wiki either. It's in Lorimar street, in the block between the cathedral and the main Star Junction avenues, right besides a camera shop. The interior is identical to the one you and Dimitri go into in 'Do You Have Protection?'.

It's not very noticeable so I probably wouldn't have found it on my own but somehow one of the first ever things I happened to hear about GTA IV was there was a sex shop there (literally before I knew Niko's name) so it was the first place I ever visited in Algonquin lol

I remember discovering this in multiplayer when the whole lobby was surprisingly in Star Junction. It was straight chaos. The police were in this lobby as well as friendly fire and it was awesome. A few people went in there and it was like a fight to see who controlled it then it turned into people holding down that Burger Shot in the area and Cluckin’ Bell. :D Damn, I miss IV multiplayer back in the day.

I was rewatching one of the best episodes of one of the best TV shows of all time, the Pine Barrens episode of The Sopranos. Ended up looking up info about the episode and holy sh*t......the actor playing the Russian dude who they try to kill in the forest is none other than Vitali Baganov aka RAY BULGARIN

Indeed. He also lends his voice to another character in a Rockstar title. He voices Savo (World Champion) in Midnight Club II.

Also, I love that episode...

*Tony and Paulie can’t understand each other on the phone*

Paulie: “You’ll never believe this. This guy was an interior decorator”

Christopher: “His house looked like sh*t.”

 It's the best. And even better for having Bulgarin's actor in it

I'll check out the voice in Midnight Club too

So good to see some Sopranos fans here - TV today by comparison is just awful!

I liked how the Sopranos' characters actually felt like really people, not just actors. I can rewatch this show after several years' gap; it was so gripping, no unnecessary over-the-top music, stupid car chases, and crappy, clichéd one liners with characters walking off-camera just as they say it. Wow what a great show that was! They just really don't make TV programs like this any more (nor should they try, today's morons would only f*ck it up and make more re-hashed prequels and sequels, eugh).

Anyway yes, good little fact to know. Thanks for the Pine Barrens reference, interesting to know.

To continue with the Sopranos, the guy whose life support you switch off Anthony Corrado is played by Robert Funaro, who played Eugene Pontecorvo in The Sopranos. Since I found this out, because of the (nsfw) scene where he smashes a bottle in someone's face I don't even feel bad killing Anthony any more lol

Non-Sopranos, I literally just noticed yesterday that cockroaches (other than the one Roman steps on) are in the game. Saw some crawling around in a hospital ward. Also it doesn't count as a thing really because there's such an insane amount of different mission failure cutscenes and phone calls. But I noticed yesterday that in Three's a Crowd, if you kill the woman in the Russian shop when you're supposed to buy clothes there there's actually a unique phone call to Roman for that . They thought of EVERYTHING.

My personal favorite fail calls are when you change out of the Albanian clothes in the 2nd Gerry mission and when you kill Gordo during "Ransom".

I didn't know about the changing clothes one! I will be doing it

I love the Ransom ones lmao. That whole mission is just a hilarious darkly comic farce with all the extra details they added to it. Literally all you have to do is take a picture and send it but they anticipated murdering Gordon or Gracie for no reason and also have Gordon making loads of comments if you take too long with taking the picture, hang around afterwards or leave/come back, it's the simplest mission but it's packed with entertainment. I love how they reward you for being creative and messing around in missions (where in V you'd probably just get the fail screen the second you aimed a gun at Gordon - no wait, you wouldn't even be able to aim a gun since you're inside 😛)

  • The type of taxi drivers will depend on what area you're in. In Alderney City and (of course) Chinatown, you'll encounter Asian taxi drivers. In Hove Beach, you can see Russian drivers, as well as the extremely rare female drivers that never speak. In North/East Holland as well as most parts of Bohan, you may see Spanish-speaking cabbies
  • Milica was supposed to send Niko an email after A Revenger's Tragedy
  • Speaking of Milica, even if you choose to respond negatively to her emails, Niko will still send a positive reply
  • If you wear the Spyde track top from the Russian Shop and you proceed to order a burger from the 69th Street Diner, the clerk will usually say "You look famous! Can I help you?". This is a reference to Sasha from Behind Enemy Lines, whom Niko is based on

This is cool! I always wear the Behind Enemy Lines outfit lol, but I haven't experienced this. Have to try it

I found an actual practical use for Brucie's friend benefit (chopper). In Museum Piece once you've cleared out the museum and you're getting ready to leave you can call him for the chopper (it's necessary to do this from the north end of the museum though - that way the chopper should arrive at Middle Park - if you do it from the south end/near the exit you're too close and it'll arrive in Star Junction which is no good). Then when you exit the museum and those cars full of mafia are ready to chase you just pop over to the nearby chopper and Brucie saves the day! Once you get to a certain height the cars go and the mission is passed.

It's not just friends who enjoy certain radio stations, some mission bosses have their favorite stations as well:

  • Dimitri - Vladivostok FM
  • Manny - San Juan Sounds
  • Playboy X - The Beat 102.7
  • Derrick - The Journey
  • Bernie/Florian - K109 (I think?)
  • Pegorino & Phil - JNR and The Fusion

The slide on the gun for the guy that plays hero in three leaf clover actually slides back in the cutscene, in TBOGT it does, not sure about IV

was just surprised to see this little detail seeing how the guns aren't like that in gameplay

-There are 2 different computers in the internet cafe. There's a regular computer and a gaming computer at the gaming area.

-If you burn out long enough, your tires can actually pop.

-Similar to what @KingAJ032304 said, there's actually recorded dialogue for main characters who get into combat. For example, Dimitri will shout in Russian while in combat. Found this out using a trainer.

-Pretty sure everyone knows this by now, but there's actually dialogue for the MP characters you play as. You don't have to be silent like in GTAO.
