Cool Things You Didn't Know About GTA IV

Recommended Posts

Some regarding the episodes:

1. The only (story) mission in the entire TBoGT where you're specifically instructed to ride a bike is "Departure Time" (the last one)

2. There are only a handful of missions in the entire TLaD where you are specifically instructed to drive a car/4 door vehicle, which are as follows:

• "Liberty City Choppers", the Yankee that you fill with bikes

• "Off Route", Prison Bus

• "Heavy Toll", Malc's Presidente and afterwards, the cocaine filled Slamvan

• "Roman's Holiday", Malc's Presidente, and optionally, Roman's Taxi as well

3. In TLAD the only mission that spawns an optional car intended for you to drive is "Off Route", the bright blue Rhapsody, but it also spawns a Stallion after the mission.

Used to think it at least broke the AI's lock on mechanic while performing it

It's useful to quickly roll behind cover after throwing a grenade, I often do it if I ambush a gang wars convoy.

The minimum amount of money you can spend to have every single clothing item (from the store) is $10,241.

To achieve this:

1. In the mission "Three's a Crowd", the very first clothing item you buy will be free, in other words, you are given a one time 100% discount. Now all the clothing here is already cheap, but to save the most amount of money is to "buy" what otherwise is the most expensive item. Either one of the Hinterland coats or Leather jackets with track top in any color, as they are all $36.

2. Don't buy ANY other clothing until you complete "Out of the Closet", and date Alex Chilton from www.craplist.net until you've reached 80% fondness and unlocked her special ability. And don't worry, you can max out her fondness with any clothing, it will just be a little slower.

3. Use her ability and buy every clothing item from the store.

The hospital scrubs outfit will give you free white tennis shoes from Modo, but you won't be able to individually select them from the wardrobe until you've bought them separately.

I was way too bored and I wanted to find out lol

Excuse me sir, am I allowed for a discount of 100%? This is my first robbery.

This is less of a "canon" thing and more of a game's way of allowing you to buy a clothing item in order to pass the mission in case the player has no money. But I abuse it in order to save a massive $36, or $18 depending on how you look at it.

So during my most recent playthrough, I have stumbled across a number of things that I have not come across or realised in my last many playthroughs.

The first one being that even if a pedestrian vehicle crashes into one of the gas station pumps, causing a chain reaction of chaos outside of the player’s control, that still counts in the game statistics of “vehicles/cars exploded” by the player. Which is annoying if you are trying to do a playthrough of no unnecessary civilian causalities. The first such instance of this counting is Packie’s vehicle car bomb cutscene during “First Date”.

Another tidbit of information along the same wavelength of civilian causalities is even if a pedestrian is involved in a vehicle pile-up and is dead at the steering wheel, if you pull their lifeless body out of the car, that is still counted as a “vehicle stolen” in the game statistics.

And the last thing I have only now stumbled across is the many lines of dialogue during Pathos’ two random encounters between himself and the rivals who taunt him during the fist fight during the first mission, then the shootout in the second mission. Course in playthroughs past I just blasted through them with a gun so fast that I never realised there was additional lines of dialogue. Was entertaining to hear them taunt Pathos as he lay on the ground in the second mission, whilst the LCPD tried (and failed) to take them down.

NPCS have trapped in car voice lines that for some reason have pretty broken activation on both PC & console. It tends to mostly trigger when you steal a police car with an arrested ped in the back. But the lines are hilarious. Funny story it once activated for me when I stole a cab in Star Junction with a female npc in the back, I was driving around and she had already said a couple of funny lines, but then I started shooting out the window at the cops and she said something like "I get it, you're a badass. Now let me out." Now I think it was just a coincidence but still, it was perfect timing given the situation.

I had them randomly play when driving around with a ped that you kidnap while stealing the car lol

In the beginning, after helping LJ and Badman, I got a call from LJ to play some darts. Picked him up, and the radio was already tuned on Massive B: he positively commented on it. Ok, that's nice... Prolly a coincidence.

Second time he called to eat something, picked him up, the radio was off, the dialogue/semicutscene was activated, at the end of it, I've tuned into Valdivostok... no comment from his side. Tuned to another station (Electro Choc?), nothing. Tuned to Massive B, and he was happy!

I've to try with Roman and Brucie, see what stations they like...

Brought Michelle to Perestrojka; saw the first show (some magician), the second was some monologue from this chick, but it was boring so more than half-way thru I've left. Michelle commented that we should have stayed till the end.

While on foot, there was a song coming from a still car waiting in traffic; Zit picks up basically any song as long you're close enough! Amazing, i thought it was only the music from the car you're driving.

After leaving Roman from the second safehouse (from the mission where Dimitri tried to kill Niko with Bulgarin), the car we came out from had both doors open and the radio was blasting. i was standing on the passenger side, pressed F to enter, and as Niko closed the door after entering from the passenger seat, the music was less louder.

Such a fantastic game, i ADORE these details!!! :inlove::lol::D

Some characters like certain radios, even when they aren't friends to hang out. Roman and Kate like The Vibe. Dwayne and Playboy X like The Classics and The Beat. Brucie and Packie like LRR. Phil Bell likes JNR and Fusion FM and Derrick likes The Journey. I think there's more characters who can comment on that though.

That I've never checked to be honest! Could be. I do know that the guys I mentioned above are set in the peds.ide to LIKE a certain station only.

Bernie Crane and Tony Prince both replied positively to IF99 and K109, Mori Kibbutz and Brucie Kibbutz replied positively to Radio Broker, Derrick McReary replied positively to Self-Actualization FM as both this and The Journey plays the same genre, Yusuf Amir and Armando Torres replied positively to The Beat 102.7 and Henrique Barads replied positively to L.C.H.C.

I tried real quick with Carmen (don't judge me) and she didn't seem to react to any station. At some point I put on Integrity and turned the radio on and off and she said "What are we listening to?" but that was it.

I can't tell for sure if it was a coincidence or if she referred to Integrity. I remember reading on the wiki that girlfriends dislike Integrity and I thought it was pretty funny but I can't remember if I checked it for myself back then. Also, since I'm playing with the EFLC exclusive stations added, I don't know if it messes up the stations' order somehow.

The way the radios work is that they have shared IDs. For example Electro-Choc and Radio Broker share the same ID so peds or cars that have this ID assigned will play either of these two by default. The only thing that seems to break is the taxi driver dialogue.

HOW'S ANNIE?

Something I've never seen come up when it comes to alternative ways to play missions. There's a nice little snipers nest you can get to by climbing the roof of the Northwood Fire station (the ladder being near where you deliver Gracie in She's a Keeper) you can shoot Marlon from in Photo Shoot. I've never seen anyone other than myself complete the mission this way

You may have seen advertisements around Liberty City for a movie called "Z Resurrection". It was originally meant to be more than just some background detail: Z Resurrection was going to be a minigame you could play within GTA IV, as a game within a game. It's where you would fight waves of increasingly difficult zombies. There were multiple weapons to be featured, which reflects all the in-game weapons (AK-47, Micro Uzi, Grenade)... except one. The game was going to feature a revolver.

latest?cb=20230508134617

This wasn't going to be unique to the mode. A revolver was planned for GTA IV but was cut, likely in favor of the Desert Eagle (tbh I would've preferred the revolver). This means that Z Resurrection as a mode was cut before the revolver was.

The two models seen in the poster above were likely going to be featured in the mode, and the "zombie" voice in multiplayer was likely reused from recordings for the Z Resurrection mode too. However, as said, this was completely scrapped likely due to time constraints. This leaves the remaining Z Resurrection posters seen in game alluding to this cut mode as something that TVTropes calls an "Orphaned Reference".

It should be mentioned that Z Resurrection wasn't the only cut minigame. Originally, the player would be able to play a whole host of video games in an activity, aptly called "Video Games" and it was something you could play with your in-game friends. The other known cut game was a retro style space shooter. Kind of a shame.

But man, just think if GTA IV had a zombie mode. This combined with Saints Row 2's Zombie Uprising, Call of Duty: World at War's Nazi Zombies, and of course, Left 4 Dead, would've made 2008 the Year of the Zombie.

I came across this video on YouTube. Whilst most of this stuff is known or atleast  common knowledge I’m surprised by how much stuff I still don’t know about GTA IV lol.

Mostly it’s to do when missions are failed (especially at the start of the game) and how certain characters like Jermaine always get a randomised outfit since I rarely take notice of things like that, but once you see if you can’t unsee it.
