Cool Things You Didn't Know About GTA IV

Really? I get that call every time I replay the game.

Same here. I hear that all that time on my playthroughs.

I think I found something new. The Russian Mafia guys Niko meets through the story could be named after European ninteenth/twenteenth century classics.

Dimitri Rascalov's surname could be based on Rodion Raskolnikov from F. Dostoyevsky's "Crime and Punishment", both are pragmatic and ruthless and don't show any sense of remorse after commiting murder.

Mikhail Faustin's surname may be based on the titular character of "Faust" by J. W. Goethe, both are also known to have an explosive temper and while appearing as evil, are good on the inside (Faust in the end uses his powers to do good on the world while Faustin usually respected Niko and considered him a vaulable associate).

Ray Bulgarin's name may be based on Mikhail Bulgakov, a Russian writer who wrote "The Master and Margarita", this name is in turn referred in the mission "The Master and the Molotov". Or, his surname is just a reference to Bulgaria which we all know is on the Balkan peninsula.

God I miss this game. I hope Niko returns in a future game but I heard the voice actor left on bad terms.

Saw this while walking around the abandoned fun fair some months ago on the new PC (did more walking than traveling in vehicles, just to enjoy the scenario).

Anyone else noticed this?

Yeah. I remember after GTA V's trailer launched many people theorised it was a hint to GTA V with the similarities of the mural and the ending of the trailer. Still cool nonetheless.:)

More EFLC related than IV related, but I noticed that all the achievements in GTA IV AND TLAD are white.

Here are some examples:

001.jpg

Off the Boat

52.jpg

The Lost Boy (TLAD)

Most of TBOGT achievements are grey too, except for two.

They are:

57.jpg(Playstation)

UPwpI4w=.jpg(Xbox)

Diamonds Forever (TBOGT)

65.jpg(Playstation)

UPnnvPg=.jpg(Xbox)

Gold Star (TBOGT)

Not really a huge fact really, just thought this was pretty cool.

P.S.

Apologies for the small pictures, other pictures sizes for these pictures are not allowed on the forums for some reason.

Surprised no one has mentioned these two facts, but in The Doomsday Heist update, we get two things:

Niko is referenced (1:39-1:45)

We learn that ULP's real name is Bernard (15:07-15:13)

I love that the game mentions Niko but, I wish it meant we'd see him again.

Hmmm nice bike

I dunno if I'm crazy about the name "Bernard." Maybe it's just me, but I don't think it suits him, it reminds me of Andy "Nard Dog" Bernard from The Office. They should have named him something else or left him unnamed.

Is this Online mission crap even written by the guys who did single player?

Oh yeah, and that mural behind the funfair ride isn't alluding to anything. GTA IV used footage and pictures from SA in various parts of the game, especially on TV.

New observation: In Wrong Is Right, Oleg's apartment lacks any sort of audio ambience, which enhances the slightly creepy feel of this mission.

At best, the events of V and especially Online are some sort of a parallel universe that truly has nothing to do with IV, or a plain old fanfiction.

Stinky Fanny, as the official moronater of this thread, who do you think is the biggest moron so far? I've liked that comment so I'm in the running now. Good luck everybody else!

Did you know there are screenshots of IV all over Max Payne 3? For instance in Max's apartment there's a picture of the helitours and Pier 45 over his bed. There are shots of the LC skyline hung in some houses in the favela too.

Jesus Christ, the ULP agent doesn't even sound the same. He sounds more like one of the Russian gangsters that hang around Hove Beach.

In the mission where you clear out the Triangle Club in Bohan for Dwayne, if you wear glasses during the cutscene they disappear and reappear multiple times.

Some of these things might have been said already, but i'm not reading 70+ pages just to check

- During their executions, Vlad is shot once, Mikhail is shot twice, and Dimitri is shot thrice (in Dish served Cold) this could be a nod to their ranking in the criminal underworld.

- Dimitri is the only GTA IV -era antagonist to not appear in the other games (although he is mentioned in Romans Holiday and Departure Time)

- In Ilyena's random encounter, if you kill Anna's boyfriend, or let him escape you will get 2 unique phone calls from Ilyena

- In normal gameplay Roman encourages Niko driving fast, yet in "Out Of Commission" he does the opposite, showing how nervous he is.

- "Ivan the Not so Terrible" and "Uncle Vlad" are the only 2 times you can freely explore Comrades Bar

- Gerald McReary most likely survived the prison attack during "Get Lost" from TLaD, as during friend activities Packie can be picked up from outside the A.S.C.F, implying he was visiting Gerald, Packie still does this after the final mission, and Get Lost occurs before "That Special Someone"

-In "Out Of Commision" Roman will say "cars are coming towards us" before Peg's goons switch onto the other lane

- Niko kills a total of 6 of his former employers (7 in the revenge ending), these are: Vlad, Mikhail, Dimitri (Dimitri is the boss of "The Master and the Molotov" and "Russian Revolution"), Francis/Derrick, Playboy X/Dwayne, Ray Boccino and Pegorino in the Revenge ending

-Despite the mission being named "Mr and Mrs Bellic", the save file after this mission will be called "In Mourning",

Spoiler

refrencing Kate or Romans death

-Despite its use in San Andreas, the N word is only used twice (in the story), once by Playboy X "It's Christmas everyday when you're rolling with this n*gga", and once by Gerald "All we've ever been is b*tches, working for Guineas, working for n*ggers, any a**hole with a buck"

- Even if you respond negatively, Niko will always send a positive email to his mother

- You can shoot off Dimitris glasses in "Do you have protection", this is a nice detail as this is the only time Dimitri appears not as an enemy, so the fact that r* included this shows the level of detail

- In "Do you have protection?" once Dimitri leaves the sex shop, you can kill the 3 porn guys, yet Dimitri will still say they're alive when speaking to Faustin

- Once you've blown up the garage in "Rigged to Blow", a man can be seen walking up to it and calling Petrovik saying "This was no accident"

-Darko is the only antagonist in the 3D and HD series to only appear in one mission (though he is mentioned in others)

-Pegorino is one of 4 antagonists in the series to be killed by another antagonist (by Dimitri in deal ending)

- "A Revengers Tradegy" is one of 3 final missions to not give a payout after finishing it, the others being "Last Stand" (VSC) and "Salt in the Wound" (CTW)

-Packie's mother is the only member of the McReary family to never drink in gameplay (this includes friend activities)

-In Final Interview the mission passed jingle plays during the end cutscene, something that never happens elsewhere

-Niko removes a lot of his contacts after the final mission, this includes Mallorie for some reason, this makes no sense due to her marrying Roman, and (in the deal ending)

Spoiler

having to raise Romans child by herself

(and it's implied Niko will help with that), I guess she's removed because she doesn't serve a purpose, but an explanation would be nice

- When Roman proposes to Mallorie, her voice mail changes accordingly, yet Romans stays the same

Gerry's use of the word is also the only time in the series it's used in a derogatory/racist way too. Though in saying that I'm glad they didn't make every black character drop it every few words. It gets annoying in San Andreas and GTA V really quick.
