'Attitude' towards GTA IV

I was speaking to a friend lately, who obviously has GTA V but played GTA IV before the former came out. He said he thought GTA IV was boring, and that GTA V is so much better (even though he didn't even complete IV as he stopped during the Francis missions).

Is this now the general opinion of the majority? Sure, IV's missions could be repetitive (as mentioned on another topic), but the story was great. It seems that when people are to judge whether a story in a video game is 'good' or not, it must have unique missions which are highly interactive, rather than a gripping plot.

GTA 4 raised the Bar for HD Openworld Games,it depends on the way people look at it,I love the missions and the way things were grounded in Reality,GTA 5 is a balance between fun and realism. In fact the game sold 25ml copies while GTA 5 sold 30ml copies.i started with the HD Era GTAs so yeah i love them.

No, sadly not, many people would prefer a great story over great gameplay. Go over to the GTA V forums and you will see that many people prefer GTA IV for it's story.

No offence, but sadly you couldn't be more wrong. People will disregard gameplay all together for a gripping plot.

Just look at Metal Gear Solid 4 or Mass Effect 2 for example, MGS4 only has 4 hours of gameplay, yet it gets many 10/10 scores and Mass Effect 2 has extremely boring combat and awful level design, yet also gets many 10/10 scores.

Why can't a game have both a gripping plot and fun gameplay. It's not impossible.

I think you're oversimplifying it. Not every player was endeared with the story. A lot of people criticize it for lacking the humor that GTA is known for, and don't think dark and serious is the right direction for the series. GTA IV also had the problem of making things so dark that some people just quit caring about the characters, and were unable to become invested in how things unfolded.

I've always found the general "attitude" towards GTA IV kind of ridiculous. There are things about the game I don't like myself like the horrible flying rats, lack of car customising and the broken economy system, but the way some people go about it like it's the spawn of satan is over the top.

I will say one thing though it's not quite as bad as it was a few years ago. In fact it's awesome to see the game getting some long due appreciation after all of this time.

One thing that always annoyed me was how Brucie teased about car customization, yet none was in the game.

That's what annoyed me about it too. It was consistently teased, but no show in the game.

Most people I know like it, from hardcore gamers to busy familymen. I can't really remember anyone who disliked IV outside of the internet (and we all know how level-headed the internet is). I've met people who didn't like it as much as VC or San Andreas, but no one who actually disliked it. I think it's the case of a vocal minority tbh.

the only reason IV is disliked is because of san Andreas its that simple the fact that it did not have some of its Unnecessary Features and ott missions is why and the fact its called Grand Theft Auto if it was was called something Different it would of been a more liked game IMO R* wanted to go in a different more mature Direction but the idiot masses im afraid did not like that.

Same. I know some people who didn't like it quite as much as the older games, but still liked it for what it tried to do. I've never met anyone who says it's boring, sh*t, dull, depressing and whatever else the internet usually uses to degrade it.

Of course that can't be said for everyone, but I can't say I've met anyone who shares the same biased, close minded views the anonymous GTA IV haters have.

IV will probably remain my favourite GTA (well unless VI returns to a somewhat realistic approach with the great features implemented in V). Actually, all that I think IV really needed was car customisation and more to spend money on. If that had of been the case then I could have easily immersed myself deeper into the game than I already have.

Definitely. Had GTA IV had car customising I don't think I'd touch GTA V again. I don't care about things such as tanks, planes, countryside etc. I'm a car guy, but GTA V has the customising and GTA IV has the physics I prefer.

GTA IV's driving physics with tunable cars would pretty much be my most played game ever. Although it almost is atm.

I'm mainly talking about non-fanboys (which still comes under the category of 'most people who play GTA' because most of them aren't true fans and plus this forum is biased because we ARE fanboys).

A lot of people will disregard the story and not give it a chance because they don't like the gameplay and/or find the missions repetitive. Many people will, of course, never touch IV again because they prefer V's gameplay and thus have invested the time into completing the story. This is the impression I've gotten, at least.

I couldn't stand IV's driving mechanics at first, but now they don't bother me. Dare I say the driving in IV is better than the PS2 era games.
