During Canada's time in Afghanistan (2001 -2012), whenever a soldier was killed, they would be flown to Canadian Forces Base Trenton where they would then make the 200KM trip to the coroner's office at the Centre for Forensic Sciences in Toronto. Every time, thousands of people would line the overpasses along the route to pay their respects.

@Ryan Those photos remind me so much of the Wootton Bassett repatriation processions.

But the repatriation processions ended there in 2011 and now take place over at RAF Brize Norton where they pass through the village of Carterton.

Is funny how the only thing that didn't suffer changes was the clock on the right.

After the Bristol Blitz the water was covered over, and so where the line of trees end by the building in the centre of the photo is where the water is now today.

Those tram tracks were dangerous during the Blitz though, which leads on to this picture:

That's a piece of tram rail that was lifted from a nearby road, sent flying over a row of houses, and into the churchyard of St. Mary Redcliffe Church after a Luftwaffe bombing raid.

That picture of Lennon is a fake, for sure. But it is interesting.

I also like the photos from the past compared to the future. Similar but different.

Remember the Hubble Deep Field image? The one where it was an amalgamation of a series of long exposure shots of something like 1sq inch of sky and showed hundreds of galaxies?

Well, the other day NASA released the eXtreme Deep Field photo:

Pretty much every thing you see on there is a galaxy of some description. And if you're wondering how big an area of sky that is, it's about the same as this, from the naked eye compared to a full moon:

(click for full size on both)

More info for the curious.

I've always been interested in astronomy, yet every time I see a picture of deep space it makes me a little bit sadder on the inside, knowing that I'll very likely never get to see whats on the "other side" with my own eyes.

Technology needs to hurry up and advance faster than it currently is.

Yea. Very few cities (possibly none) had a skyline of skyscrapers like NYC already did. Looking at that old photo makes the 1930s seem close to the present

I don't know what's worst, the fact that it happened. Or the fact that they seem happy about it.

In the topic of skull piles, I remember seeing a picture from a big pile of humans skulls at the end of World War 1. A mix of Germans and Frenchs if I remmeber correctly.

Cheers for sharing that link, man. Absolutely fascinating stuff.

@ Slingaa: That picture was insane. As it was loading I just saw the pile become larger and larger. Terrifying.

Here's a couple I stumbled across the other day. Both are done using screws.
