Signal Hill

user posted image

A panoramic view of Signal Hill in 1923, a small city in Southern California. On June 21, 1921, oil was discovered in Signal Hill, part of the Long Beach Oil Field, and the city was soon covered with over 100 oil derricks (seen here). Because of its prickly appearance at a distance, it gained the nickname "Porcupine Hill". Today, many of the oil wells and nodding donkey oil pumps are gone, although some remain. Signal Hill is now a mix of residential and commercial areas.

I got bored and found that exact spot in google earth, crazy how much has changed but some of those houses are still there

Matchstick Hogwarts by Patrick "The Matchmaker" Acton.

602,000 matchsticks in total in that model, and I was even lucky enough to see this amazing piece of work in The House of Katmandu in Mallorca.

This guy has done many amazing pieces:

http://www.matchstickmarvels.com/models.html

He's even planning on making a matchstick model of the New World Trade Center.

And another matchstick creation:

A North Sea oil rig platform model entitled "Catherdrals of the Sea" by David Reynolds. With a total of 4.075 million matchsticks in total, it is a current Guinness World Record holder.

Heh I hadn't thought of that before. I looked a little more into the history of Signal Hill (by which I mean I followed some links on Wikipedia) and found some more pictures on it. This is the extent of the oil field shown on a map of Long Beach:

And here's the oil field today:

The only thing I can recognize that's the same in the 1923 photo and the 2011 one is the actual hill (which is on the left in the recent photo).

I spent many years in Colorado Springs (although I haven't been back there since I left in '96) and used to attend football games at Falcon Stadium. Seeing that picture is absolutely stunning and sad.

The picture is taken looking east from the corner or e burnett st and california ave. The big railway trench is still there but its not for trains anymore.

You certainly know your way around the place. Have you been there before or did you somehow manage to learn this from just Google Earth? I'm not familiar with the place so all I can recognize with my untrained eye is the topography. tounge.gif

More info if you're interested.

Amazing. It's as if human anatomy had been based on the most majestic pieces of space itself. If ever there was a god. He would have been that of Da Vinci, for sculptures of flesh are even more astonishing than those of stone.

Blitz I like the dollar picture and what it represents but US dollar bills are made of linen not paper because linen is harder wearing!

Unfortunately this image is made on a computer for an advertising campaign for a toothpaste, It's still pretty cool!

This one is to honour the hopeful Mars landing of NASA's Curiosity rover in approximately 5 hours. After completing a journey of over 3.5 million miles, it'll enter the thin atmosphere of Mars at roughly 8000Mph. Once landed it will send a signal back to Earth to let us know its status. Meanwhile back on Earth we will have to endure a gripping 13 minute wait to find out, thanks to the lag caused by the massive distance.

So when I was home last month visiting my family and friends, I was looking around the house one day and I happened to come across an interesting treasure in the house. I found my great-grandfather's victory medal from World War I. I thought it was pretty awesome to be able to hold something like that in my hands. I took a picture of the obverse and reverse.

1919?

That's when the Treaty of Versailles was signed that officially marked the end of World War 1.
