Do you believe in GOD?

You're not comprehending the he didn't kill them part. Our bodies are simply avatars for are spirit. You can't kill the spirit.

Let's say that's correct.

How do you explain what God did to Saul? Saul was picked by God to be King of Israel. He was a brave man, a charismatic man and served his people faithfully.

And how did God reward Saul's loyalty? He drove him mad. If you recall, only the music of David could soothe his fits of rage.

You deny that God kills men because their bodies are shells - how do you explain him attacking the mind of one of his most faithful, loyal servants?

I feel he's just a troll, and he should find better use of his time.

look who's talking.

you're not interested in debating anything.

you just claim to know all sorts of things as though it's common knowledge that everyone agrees on... when it's not.

people raise counterpoints and you don't even attempt to reconcile them.

you just say "this is the way it is because I know it because I believe it."

that's terrible logic and that's not how a debate works.

If atheists can't respect people who have faith, why don't you STFU and keep your morals too yourself.

.... I think it's trying to communicate.

So atheists forcing people to say that God doesn't exist is communicating? Clearly, you need to change your way of "Communication".

Forcing is the wrong word in this sense friend, a preferable alternative would be "seeing sense". People stop believing in God once they what a load of complete nonsense it all is as God is probably the largest logical fallacy in history and as such they move on in their lives and generally become better people for it.

Though you do bring up a very hypocritical point of view, you say that atheists should leave people like Christians alone (despite them having religious views akin to that of a seven year old's belief in Santa Clause) but yet it's the Christians, Muslims and just organised religions in general that have gone to absolutely absurd extents to make force people to believe in God.

Think of the amount of people that have died because of religion, whether it be because of wars, attacks, fights, disputes or just plain idiocy; for example claiming that God will save you or protect you when you're going to attempt to do something ridiculously stupid like jumping off a cliff and hoping you'll grow wings. Yep organised religion and well, religion in general has caused an overabundance of trouble over the last few thousand years and I think it's time we dragged it kicking and screaming into the light.

You may not like what people like me have to say, hell you might even down right hate us for it but no-one ever said that the truth would be pleasurable. The Universe wasn't designed for humans, there isn't a mystical omniscient, omnipotent, omnipresent and omnibenevolent being constantly looking out for you and your interests ... No, God's a construct of the human mind and you'd do well to remember that friend.

We as atheists dislike the concept of a God because not only is it impossible, it's allowing a bunch of fully grown independent people to behave like children. Humanity needs to grow up, and unfortunately it's taking a bit too long for it to do it of its own accord, some people need to be taken by the horns and told the truth of it, show them how much proof there actually is for their beliefs and allow them to make an informed independent decision, rather then just being brainwashed.

No, the people of Israel asked for a King - God chose Saul through Samuel to be King.

And because Saul showed mercy to an opposing tribe and didn't slaughter them all, God drove him mad.

I'm fully up to speed on the story, you know. And please, stop with the 'opened his mind to Satan' bullsh*t - for a start, the Devil isn't evil and secondly, Saul only saw that witch because he had no f*cking clue what he'd done to make God act like such a dick.

God betrayed Saul for no reason whatsoever. None.

Now let's hear you justify it.

Maybe you need to grow up because we wouldn't exist without a cause. And you also say that people who believe in God force other people to convert? Get real. It's because people study and study and research a lot, which they think is right for them. As for the rest, it's nonsense because people who think jumping off a cliff or starting wars is a good thing are on the opposite end, they clearly don't know sh*t about religion which in fact is against the religion overall. Now if you hate God so much, why don't you STFU and keep your unproven and useless opinions to yourself.

"If the Christian God isn't real, how do you explain the fact that God is real?"

I think El_Diablo's posts about you holding beliefs with no evidence are perfectly valid, and you ignoring them only undermines your argument. If this is as much of an obvious fact as you say it is, can you please demonstrate this?

Personally, and I may be speaking for most atheists here, I am perfectly fine with someone believing in a god. But when they claim that it is an absolute fact and refuse to concede that it is merely something they believe, that's something entirely different. Much like saying that it takes religion to be atheist (Church of Atheism, lawl). Though I think what could possibly be very telling was a passage from one of your earlier posts:

I know the truth, but even if I didn't I couldn't bring myself to an understanding as bleak as the one you guys share.
I think it'd be nice if there were a place I went after I died that was blissful and awesome. That sounds really great. Except I have no reason to think that's true, and I am intellectually honest enough to face the fact that I can't rationally justify believing something like that. It has nothing to do with me being angry at a god, because it's hard to be angry at something you don't believe exists. It's a perfectly calm, rational choice.

Not only did Saul disobey God, but the children of Israel did as well.

Bartleby, why do you think there are lots of religions in the first place? Because only one religion has ONE true God. People choose and believe in whichever religion they think is right for them, there is simply nothing else to say. No one is forcing to prove that God actually exists, it's our belief. The point is, some Atheists can't stand religion and can't respect it, probably because they've had one too many things in their lives and have nothing to blame it on, so they just put it on religion just to express their view on "God". However, i respect Atheists like you because at least you're not forcing religious people into God doesn't exist.

So you admit that God threw Saul away when he was bored of him? You admit that God betrayed Saul?

Perhaps you'd also like to justify why God betrayed King David - the man he chose over Saul - and killed David's child? Please, explain to me how David lusting after a married woman was justification enough for God to murder his infant child?

I'm genuinely curious to see how many cases of betrayal and murder you will overlook in your crazed attempt to portray this God as 'pure'.

Bartleby, why do you think there are lots of religions in the first place?

Because as pattern-seeking mammals, we are susceptible to adopting biases that are not necessarily reflected by reality, and this was especially true in an era where we knew next to nothing about the universe, and so a catch-all explanation about how and why everything is the way it is was a very convenient way to explain things. As our understanding has grown throughout the centuries, religions have morphed and changed into something much less corporeal, and more "spiritual". Isn't it strange that the miracles we could have actually investigated stopped occurring long ago, and that no modern claim of a miracle has ever withstood scientific investigation?

Sorry, but just because there is a religion, does not necessarily mean there is a god.

so they just put it on religion just to express their view on "God".
The burden of proof is on the one making the claim. It's not my job to prove you wrong, you have to prove yourself right. Edited by Bartleby

It's possible. We're a pretty tight-knit group, so we tend to have similar ideas about stuff. But on the other hand, I know I for one have been maybe a bit overzealous regarding this topic tonight, so it may very well have been my tag you kept seeing as you scrolled past. tounge.gif

No hard feelings about the topic, though. I think as long as we can exchange ideas in a mature setting, the rest takes care of itself.

Your brother is a coward and so are you.

I wonder how often your Mother weeps when she considers what gutless, spineless worms she's raised. Well, not to worry. I'm sure God will take her from you eventually. And I'm sure the parting will be painful indeed, as her mind and body succumb to the slow march of time.

And when you're cleaning up her sh*t and urine, I hope the love of this child-killer God keeps you warm as your cry yourself to sleep.

UrbanTheEmcee, you are completely and utterly delusional and ignorant. You have a child's view of the world and I pity you, I truly do. Trust me, you live in a sad, sad little world and I only wish for you to one day escape it. I don't mean to sound like a pretentious c*nt or 'superior' and you'll probably turn back saying "Well I'm the one who pities you". But no, I'm not the one who needs it.

I live in a world where I've thought over my opinions on the most important questions since I was a child; thought for myself and changed my view in light of new evidence found during my experience of existence. I've never let someone of authority indoctrinate me without evidence and when intelligent freethinkers have challenged my position, I listen to them and don't shut them out on false pretences. I'm closer to truly understanding the universe more than anyone of your closed mindset ever will.

You're not the lucky one, I am, and I hope you one day too have the luck to break the same shackles in your mind that I broke away when I was around four years old.

Um, you know, it's not considered a rebuttal if you just say "ha! missed me!'......you actually have to, you know....rebut. You've spent your whole time laying out your position, but have taken literally zero initiative to defend it. Are you even trying to comprehend this stuff before you reply to it? confused.gif

I'll be honest, my heart hasn't been in this debate since Survivor came on.

I know the burden's upon me, blah, blah, blah. I just don't feel the need to debate something I'm solid on. To me there's no debate. I simply came here to give my opinion. I say opinion because I know how butt-hurt people get when I say fact.

See? This is called holding someone accountable for their actions.

Is it such a difficult concept to grasp?

And all I did was make a few off-colour remarks. Now, if I get called out for such a little thing - doesn't it stand to reason that God should be held accountable for his misdeeds?

Honestly, it's a simple enough idea to comprehend. When a parent smacks a child, they are holding that child accountable for their wrongdoing. If we can attribute the concept of personal responsibility to a wayward child, why the f*ck does this God get a free pass?

Wow, did Tarantino write that.

Nice, real nice.

Missed me with the bullsh*t, maybe next time though buddy.

Fair enough. Out of interest, though, what convinced you that there is a god, and it was the Christian God?

@Typhus: I'm not even talking about the moral implications of the Christian God should it exist, and hell I agree with you. That's still no reason to be an ass.

I say opinion because I know how butt-hurt people get when I say fact.

1. The world is 157 years old - FACT!

2. Dinosaurs are a lie that people believe because they are weak - FACT!

3. You are happy, you just don’t know it - FACT!

4. We all come from the same tree - FACT!

5. Everyone is related to everyone else, except for people with red hair - FACT!

6. Sperm does not exist - it is a lie spread by biology teachers - along with everything else you have ever been told - FACT!

7. Men are supposed to lie with nine new partners a week. Women are supposed to lie with six, except for in July, when they must lie with five men a day - FACT!

8. Aliens exist and are present on earth. If you have a birth mark, you may be descended from Kraff, the famous Emperor of the 4th Paradigm - FACT!

9. Trees talk, but only some people hear them - FACT!

10. People who believe in something live much longer than atheists, and they have eternal life thrown in for good measure - FACT!

11. If you believe this and turn your hands and wallet over to EPSILONISM, you’ll live a happy life. Otherwise you are doomed - FACT!

12. KIFFLOM - HAPPINESS IS YOURS! KIFFLOM!

If you didn't know this, maybe you should read the Epsilon Tract.

Why would I debate the color Blue, being blue, if a blind man told me it was red.

but we're not debating common sense facts that everyone agrees on.

we're debating beliefs versus evidence.

your metaphor (once again) is extremely weak.

sort of like your logic; neither holds much water.

why do you think there are lots of religions in the first place? Because only one religion has ONE true God.

another example of terrible logic.

the reason why there are so many different brands of religion is the same reason why there are so many different brands of potato chips.

BECAUSE THEY'RE MAN-MADE AND COMPETING FOR CUSTOMERS. they're made for different tastes and different senses and different attitudes depending on different parts of the world.

people invented god (or multiple gods) to explain the things that they couldn't explain.

thunder. lightning. flood. tornado. earthquake. drought. plague. pestilence. disease.

people couldn't explain these things before we had the technology and knowledge to understand them so people made up fairy tales about mythical gods who control the skies.

it's pretty simple.

the fact that people invented god and believe in god is not proof that god is real.

that's classic logical fallacy. it doesn't make any sense.

I don't wish to debate this with you any further.

Typhue (x-communicated)

El_Diablo (x-communicated)

and there it is.

another religious person simply gives up in the face of criticism.

another point for logic.

another defeat for dogma.

Come now, I simply needed to illustrate my point.

Imagine if I had reacted to your comments by claiming that I was somehow 'above' criticism. I'd rightly be ridiculed for such arrogance.

Yet the religious apply such bizarre logic to their deity and we are told to be 'respectful' and 'tolerant' no matter how brazenly they flout the basic precepts of logic itself.

I can't help but wonder why they are so unreceptive to the notion of accountability when so much of their philosophy is centred around sin, atonement and punishment. Surely holding God accountable is the logical conclusion to the Christian notion of salvation and damnation? No God can be above the laws he creates.

I see what you were trying to drive at, but I think you may find that when you say things like this, this gives a hypothetical theist an emotional "out". They feel like since they are being disrespected, you must be unable to argue with them and thus they win, and they go on to believe that atheists are jaded assholes. I think the point you were trying to make was a damn good one, but your means of illustration was only ever going to shut the conversation down rather than keep it open. confused.gif

You're not wrong. But i think your methods could be tweaked for better results. wink.gif

@El_Diablo: I don't see how you can debate the existence of God and be taken seriously with that username.

Sorry.
