JustinR512
Ok I just got my first Sand King. It's an SWB that I found at the far western end of the Sandy Shores area, it may have been near the Industrial Plant survival. Anyway, I'm looking for some tips on it. First of all, is the SWB the one I want? Is it the better off-roader? Second, for off road driving, does it matter if I get a suspension upgrade? Or should I keep it not upgraded so it's as high as possible? Third, do the extended fuel tanks have any effect on off road performance? I know the real-world answers to these questions, at least i think I do. I'm just not sure how the game handles those issues. Lastly, is there anything else you can suggest or let me know about? I'm not 100% sure if this is going to be my permanent off road vehicle. I can tell it's better off road than my MW Mesa. I tried a rebel with all the upgrades and wasn't a big fan, to be honest. But the Sand King seems pretty good off road, and it's really fun driving over other cars....
Brophers
To be honest I am not sure if the tyres and suspension and such actually effect driving, had heard someone trying different tyres and seeing no change if off-roading. Did have a lot if love for the SandKing Xl, was a cool truck but have now found the Bison. Can fit 6 players in it which is just crew winning. Only problem I found with the SandKing is it is not great for racing in off road. The dune buggy and bifta seem to own it.
JiNX77
I had an XL for quite some time, my first crew vehicle. As far as SWB vs XL I don't think there is any performance difference. If there is it is maybe that the XL has slightly better handling due to the longer wheelbase. Same as Brophers I'm not for sure on the tires/suspension performance. The extended tanks do nothing functional except making it easier to get high-centered. They might count the same one shot explosion as the exposed tanks on motorcycle/dune buggy/bifta, I never experimented with that. Also as Brophers said it's not great at racing but I can say from experience racing on a Sanchez and looking back to see only the grille of a Sandking on your taillights is a bit harrowing. EDIT: Stat comparison on SC shows both versions with identical performance. Preference would be based on desired number of occupants/aesthetics. I mean, when you don't use them, you won't hit anything. but when putting them, you'll hit the ground with those. put it on high armor, use it as a defense. trust me- its big size will prevent NPCs from shooting you. plus the armor. sure it is a fun off-road. it has like the best mods ever! I hope I helped you here Edited January 12, 2014 by ten-a-penny
JustinR512
Somehow I never noticed that the SWB was also available to buy, for some reason I thought it was only the XL. Once I realized I could try both and pick which one I liked best, that's exactly what I did. I think the XL looks better. I think the SWB was better off road. The XL seemed to get upside down more often. It's hard to say for sure, since I was playing around in the hills between the Sandy Shores LSC and the city and not following a specified path, but if think the SWB was in general better at climbing. The XL also seemed to have a bit of difficulty going over cars compared to the SWB, and to be honest, I'm really enjoying that. So I'm keeping the SWB, just wishing I could get the look of the XL with the SWB's performance.

If you wanna hook up and do some wheeling in the game, drop me a line and we'll head to the mountains. I'm a die-hard off roader and looking for folks to join on a trip. If the game does follow real world physics then getting the suspension upgrades would be a worthy mod because LOW COG is the way to go when it comes to building a rig for the trails. If you have a LOW COG then it lessens the chance of a rollover. The downside would be less breakover angle and underside clearance but it's a small price to pay for better stability. What I noticed about the SK is that it's bouncy as hell compared to the stock Mesa. I took it on the trail leading to the highest mountain and it was a challenge on some obstacles that the Mesa took on rather easily BUT the SK has way more traction it seems. I do wish the game had a TRUE 4x4 vehicle that's locked front and rear so we got all four tires spinning ALL the time. I mean wtf is the point of MW's Mesa if it's 2wd? JustinR512
No I've never been off-roading in real life. I'm sure I couldn't afford to get into it right now, either. I understand about a high COG leading to tip-overs...but off-readers are lifted. I know they're lifted for ground clearance and other concerns. I guess what I'm getting at is that you can't have it too high, or too low, so how in this game do we know what's ideal for a particular vehicle? The SK comes with a high lift to begin with. But suppose the suspension upgrades didn't stop where they do. Suppose there were more, and they kept bringing the body more and more down, until eventually it'd be a low-rider. Well obviously that's not ideal for off roading. So how do we know where to stop lowering it? How do we know it's the last upgrade that is possible, and not the second-to-last one? I am interested in going off-roading in the game if you'd like to go sometime. If you have a MW Mesa, it'd be interesting to see you in that, and me in the SK, each going the same route and seeing where one vehicle has problems that don't faze the other one. (I think the SK is a lot more durable, too.) It would be great to do this with someone with real-world experience showing me some tricks and tips. I'm on the 360 and my user name is my gamertag. Can't really have an "ideal" setup cuz most of the time what works for one terrain might not work well with another. For instance if I'm taking the Mesa out on the mountains then I want the lowest possible height cuz of the steep hills but if I'm going to mess around in the rocks and boulders then I'd want a little more height to clear the bumpers and underside. Once you play around with a particular rig for a while then you'll learn what it handles well and doesn't then you can raise/lower it to what works best. In the real world, for my Jeeps, I lift just enough to functionally fit the tire size I want to run. Then I mod the underside and bumpers for extra clearance so I get good clearance and low cog but this ain't entirely possible in the game.

mo-seph
being that the swb has a shorter wheelbase it does get grounded less... ive jsut switched from an Xl (found on the street) and an SWB 9purchased as i wanted to move it to the back of my garage)... im preferring the SWB myself too. form the suspension clearance isnt that big a difference but lowered it is alot more stable. 84Skyhawk
I have had both the XL and the SWB and I like the SWB a lot better. I took both up Mt. Chiliad and the SWB seemed to do better. Its not as long so it's easier to maneuver. The fuel tanks on the side do have a great effect on the off roading abilities, they tend to scrape everything. I would keep the ride height the same. Now it you want to be able to make it up steep inclines easier, just upgrade the engine.
XJpostman
The shorter wheel base on the SWB means that it won't bottom out as easily as the XL. I prefer the look of the XL personally. The upgraded suspension actually makes it stiffer as well as dropping it and articulation is an off roaders best friend so I'd say keep it high and loose. Gas tanks lose a TON of ground clearance so even if they did anything I wouldn't recommend them. Tires make no difference in this game The sandking is the best for off roading in GTA 5 just because it has power AND ground clearance. The Adder and Sultan will make it most places the sandking will and some it won't though which is stupid.
