Dr. John
I have recently started to play Assassin's Creed 1 after I finished Assassin's Creed 4 Black Flag. Unfortunately, I just can't adapt to the controls. It all feels...weird. The fact that AC 1 has very old system of controls has not helped my synchronization with the "new" controls either. Oh, the irony. It's a game about synchronizing anyways. Does anyone feels the same when they start a new game after a long time? It feels the same when I play GTA III after playing GTA IV for a long time. Everything feels different.
Kiffster
I think the only time where I felt "Damn, I can't play this game anymore" because of its age, controls or whatever was a few years ago when I decided to replay Tomb Raider II for the first time in a very long while. I stopped buying TR games after The Last Revelation, but got into the series again with Legend. After I played Anniversary, I decided to give Tomb Raider II another shot (unfortunately I didn't have TR1 anymore), but man, I just couldn't get past the first level on The Great Wall of China. Everything felt so different, the controls was so confusing and unresponsive a lot of the time, resulting in Lara's death on numerous occasions, and that was just within the very first cave. If I remember correctly, there was no mouse support either, forcing me to turn Lara around to try and see what's behind her (that freakin tiger!!!). Huge, HUGE problem! Lara moved so slow and the tiger always seemed to be behind her, making it damn near impossible to try and kill it. It was the first time I've tried to play the game since the 90s, and I remember how amazing it was when I first got the game, but I was so used to modern games and Legend+Anniversary that I just couldn't play it anymore. It just felt impossible, so I gave up after being killed for the (lost count) time on top of the wall haha Edited January 11, 2014 by Werebot85
Andreas
It feels the same when I play GTA III after playing GTA IV for a long time. Everything feels different. I have no problem with going back to old games like GTA III, Midnight Club II, et cetera, or other games that are equally old or even older, however, top-down view ones like GTA2 are an exception. I used to play this game a lot when I was very young, but I can't get into it anymore. I tried it a few months ago, and it's just unplayable, in my opinion. The zoom effect that occurs every time you drive cars while not keeping the same acceleration is extremely annoying. Though, the controls are the worst thing about this game and the same is the case with a lot of other 2D titles as well. 98 in 1
I managed to get a hold of an emulator and Super Mario World on my PC. When I started up I was like "hell yeah, I'm gonna be rusty, but the ol juices will start flowing and I'll be flying through the levels in no time". As you guessed, that wasn't the case. The controls are so awkward on PC it's crazy, and I have no idea how to remap them at all if possible. It turned me off completely, which was disappointing because I used to sink so many hours into SMW on the SNES and the GBA. Another game that I had trouble getting back into because of odd controls was Ghost Recon. I wanted to chalk that up to the fact that COD handles way differently from it, but in all honestly Ghost Recon has a really odd control scheme due to the fact that you have so many commands at your disposal for your squad. Dr. John
All right, so today I finally managed to get hooked up with the controls of the game but I still get confused with the counter feature. The fact that I use hidden blade in fights doesn't help it either. I just don't like to play with the sword. It's very slow. And to be honest, I feel like every gamer gets confused when he plays a new game after playing the previous one for a long time. It is common for games to have the movement controls (W, S, A, D) but other controls really matter the most. A single series should have the same set of controls instead of differing per new title. Of course, new controls can get a differnt key.
Th3MaN1
I'm sure that happens with most people. Especially on consoles, where you only have a few pre-set control schemes. On PC it's better, but it still happens.
Boxman108
Happens mostly in the MGS games for me but I get used to them after a bit. I like Saints Row 2 more than 3 or 4 but the controls are a bit more clunky and awkward in 2. Hard to go back to Metroid Prime 1 and 2 after 3 so I'm thankful for the Trilogy. Am glad Zelda has more or less been consistent.
Doublepulse
I dont know how to describe it as well as you did, but I feel the same. It isn't that the game is horrible, it is just you see the changes and mass improvements they made with the new games and you really don't remember them being this way.. Whether you can call some games an improvement or not is up to the person playing.
