Would you ever consider worshipping ancient Roman/Greek gods?

One of my favorite topics!

To answer the topic question, yes. And why? Because it seems like specialist Gods and Goddesses would care more about what ever you're praying for. That could mean they're extra wrathful, though, if you mess up, or just because. Sort of like Shintoism where the kami are in everything, so you should respect everything. Or like a corporation where tasks are sorted out in different departments.

Doesn't it sense for societies based on Greek/Roman forms of government to look at adopting their religions? When modeled after Rome, do as the Romans did? (Let's not talk about that whole collapsing bit.)

On the other hand, it is convenient to have one God to throw all your problems at, and of course he could handle it, being God.

I really couldn't agree more. If people find it unapproachable because they are not Roman or Greek, you could easily rename the same deities with American or more modern names and keep their functions exactly the same.

If I was going fishing i'd rather pray to a sea god than an overarching god. If I wanted a promotion i'd rather pray to the god of prosperity, et cetera. I don't see why they ever got rid of that system. It seems like an oversimplification to attribute everything to one deity.

I'm just curious, admiral.. and truly, I'm curious. Are you really a female? If yes, cool, If not, cool. But I mean damn... I haven't seen the slightest bit of lady-like out of you yet.

No thank you. Especially after I saw what Kratos did to most of them.

Only Lord Kratos.

In other words, you are into monotheism or the Old Testament God.

I just issued a prayer to Diana because I went outside and a fox was there making some weird noise.

I would have jumped on that band wagon back in the old days. Now, I just enjoy the tales and legends of Greek gods and goddesses. Mythology is the greatest.

Nope. I just admire the Greek gods but ultimately I'm not that kind of a person who believes in more than one God. I worship the one and only God.

Who made a New Year's resolution and which deity did you promise to keep it to? WinterEdit, how much do you fear your God? Please be specific, with examples.

"The practice of making resolutions itself dates back to ancient Babylon, who made promises to their gods for the New Year, often having to do with concrete, easily achievable tasks like vowing to return borrowed farm equipment. Now promises are made to ourselves and are primarily psychological in nature. With the threat of godly repercussion removed and more complex problems to solve, the odds of success are significantly reduced."

No. The only thing more obsolete than God is multiple Gods.

I'd rather worship some DnD Forgotten Realms deiteis.

I'd definitely go for Lathander then.

Or Cyric, considering he murdered two other deiteis.

I made a promise to Venus and to Mercury about doing something but i'd rather not share the details because it is very personal and i'm afraid they might get upset if I tell you.

On one hand, that's impressive that you're taking your promises seriously, but on the other, what a tease!

When it comes to religion I really don't take a stance on either side of the Believer/nonbeliever fence, but I do like the idea of this because as other said it sounds more personal. Plus, after reading this I had noticed that a lot of music I listen to has some sort of references to these gods/goddesses. As far as going to a temple or something I would totally do it because it would be a cool experience and a bit of prayer couldn't hurt anyway right?

I'm a out to sea on the whole matter. Raised monotheist, now more of a non-personified henotheist. I interpret the lowercase g's (gods) as spirits. Like "team spirit" or "national pride". It's an emotional and mental state of group consciousness. The capital G (God) is the top of the pyramid (or the center of the wheel?) and is the sum of all the lesser g's and then some.. If man is like the water in a wave, and great men are those at the crest, then the gods are the waves in motion, and God is all of that and everything else. The engine that drives creation.

On another track:

I believe the same driving forces that created earlier religions are still among us. Thus you have devotion to political parties and sports franchises. Comes across as more of a idolized brand thing but you can't tell me there aren't zealots in each bunch. I would even say that some who admire the founding fathers to the nth degree behave like cultists (the intro to Bioshock Infinite struck me as a little too close to the truth).

Rown :rampage:

p.s. In answer to the question, no I probably wouldn't worship the Greco-Roman gods. They were for another people in another time. Also, the personification of these forces doesn't do much for me.

Well not unless he never impaled himself with that the blade and releasing the power of 'hope' to mankind, he could have been something despite being the former God of War.

I still wonder what happened to Kratos after his body was missing from the after credits scene?

What do you guys think of Piers Anthony's Incarnations of Immortality: Fate, War, Nature, Evil, Good, Time and Death? You can get the gist of the story on Wikipedia. Which type would you worship or take yourself, if regular living humans could take on the role of a deity character?
