How do I turn off voice chat?

Sometimes when I'm waiting for a session to start, someone is talking through their mic, and you can tell who it is by that wifi-like icon next to their name when they talk. Now the reason I'm not wearing a headset is because I don't want to communicate verbally with complete strangers. I also find their voices mostly really annoying.

How do I turn it off?

Maybe you shouldn't be such a hermit. You have the wonderful gift of being able to talk to all sorts of interesting people from all over the world, and you just want to throw that away? I though I was a shut in...

You should just leave your chat on and mute the annoying and the disgusting people. Who knows, you might find some friends you can play with instead of running around freemode shooting everyone on sight for no reason. From my experience, that's all that people who are not in chat do.

Select menu>chat>friends/crews/nobody

That is for freemode only. I want it turned off completely.

Communication is fine, but not vocal. For one I don't like how my voice sounds through a microphone. And most importantly there is just too many people who have the free pass to scream in my ears or talk in a non-english language. Both hindrances I don't want to submit to.

Now if there was a text-based chat system, that'd be great. Unfortunately typing with a controller tends to be incredibly annoying, which is why this mostly only works for my PC games.

A few times, I have wanted to send a message to someone in GTA0. I plugged in a regular USB computer keyboard and it just worked (on PS3 anyway). Much much much better than the controller.

But I agree, the text chat is still difficult as hell. And if I was trying to do an actual mission or anything interactive with people, I would be killed by the time I got the send message mode up on my phone, let alone getting a chance to type the message and then backing out of the phone, back to the game.

One guy I met online asked if I was on KIK, which is some kind of chat service associated with Instragram. Again, if you have a computer sitting next to you while you play (and unfortunately many people probably do not), using an external web-based chat with friends that you need to coordinate with in GTA0 would be so much more efficient than the in-game text.

I also agree with you about all the things wrong with audio chat. I just don't want to get into it. Some people use skype with their friends or crew, and if they are used to that, I think it would be great for them.
