Fireman
Did you try to take out the HDD and shove it back in? If it works most of the times it could be taht your HDD isn't plugged in properly.
Misbegotten cad
Here are the top three most popular ways of repairing your PS3 1.By dropping the console from the top of the Empire State Building. 2.By hitting the console with a sledgehammer. 3.By dropping the console from the Empire State Building, then hitting it with a sledgehammer. Best to try these on somebody else's PS3 first. Lil Weasel dint, and now he's like real pissed at me!

X-Seti
The PS3 red light can mean it overheats, but if it does this for too long it could be a GPU. first gen PS3 (fat 60 / 80) the solder is the main issue as it brakes down with time shorting the life of your ps3. Sony are known for taking short cuts using cheap solder and I dunno why since they said the PS3 should have a 10 year lifespan. mine only lasted 3 years so they hope you buy a new one. It will not be long before it YLODs, It happen to 2 of mine. When I contacted Sony they offered me a newer model for 110 pounds, not what I call helpful. I haven't brought anything from them since and I've stayed away from the PS4 knowing there could be problems down the road. On the other hand your harddrive in your PS3 could be faulty so swap it out for another. .
