gta_sa.exe has stopped working

Question

HoboJoe0858

I recently reinstalled Windows Vista to my laptop, and with it GTA:SA. It's Second Edtion (2.0)

Every time I start the game, before it gets to the main menu after the splash screen, the game crashes to the desktop with "GTA_SA.exe has stopped working"

I've uninstalled and reinstalled multiple times, cleaned the registry with CCleaner, ran in compatibility mode for Win98 and XP, running as admin. There's also no "gta_sa.set" in the user files to delete. It still will not run.

Perhaps, your anti-virus/firewall is interfering with the game? Try turning it off.

You can also try installing the game into C drive. People have reported that doing so has helped them run the game on Vista.

By chance is the 'Virtual copy' of the game still active (not deleted) from when you first installed?

Have you also deleted the gta_sa.set file?

There was no gta_sa.set

Game was installed in the locations "C:\Games\GTA" and "C:\Program Files\GTA" at different times.

The Hard Disk was completely formatted and it's also a different hard dist from before.

I've also updated my video and audio drivers to current versions.

Downloaded and installed DirectX9.

Sometimes updated drivers aren't the best for the old games. You might want to experiment with the older driver(s).

True.

I did run it before with the default system drivers before posting this.

I've come to the conclusion that it's a problem with my disk drive, DirectX9 would not install from my game disks, so I had to use the downloadable version from Microsoft.

Works ok with Directx 10, in my Windows 7.
