Definitely what I thought.

My opinions on today:

- Macbook pro 13":

•Was waiting for this with the hopes of buying one, but that Intel HD4000 is really a deal breaker. I was hoping for some sort of discrete graphics.

- iMac:

•Very good looking,

•LOVE the storage options, Here's to hoping I can somehow hack that 3TB hdd into my current gen iMac

•Very closely matched in performance by the previous generation. Also, taking into consideration that the old GPU is actually slightly more powerful than the 660m they put in the new iMac. That being said. the 680MX is a bloody beast. Proper gaming stuff.

•Love how thin it is, but don't see the need for this since it's something stationary. Although I DO appreciate its 8 pounds lighter. The 27" is a b*tch to move around!

- IPad 9.7":

•HOLYSH*TWTFBBQ. They released a new generation within 6 months?

- iPad mini:

•Where do I start? I like that they made a smaller one, although I'll probably never buy it. Not sure about that design, have to see it in person.

•1024x768 res? noooooo thanks. I'm used to 1280x720 on a 4.8" screen. It won't look half as good on 7.9". On my 1st gen ipad it looks soo blurry. I bet a "retina display" will be released for 2nd gen ipad mini

• iPad 2 innards? Its fast for now, it won't be in 3-4 months time. especially considering the gap between the ipad 2 and the new ipad 4 hardware prowess

- mac mini:

• Still a very nice entry device

- Mac pro:

•??????

Ipad upgrade might just be enough for me to finally trade in my iPad2. The 3 will be a good grab for anyone interested in a discount at the moment.

MBPR13... no gfx card sort of cripples it for me. Super rad for anyone with an Air and looking for more horsepower though.

That imac - wow! The lower end gfx card is sort of a pain, but the portability of this thing... I know dude who truck around their iMacs to edit remotely or along to shoots, so yeah, super handy. Love it.

And the mini... looks cute and all but too small for me. wink.gif

well it does come with a 680MX 2GB and a 675m which are stupidly fast. I don't know why they only advertised the 660m in the keynote..

On another note..I had this irrational temptation to sell my s3 and get an iphone 5 32GB... looked for unlocked ones on ebay..€950!! THATS PREPOSTEROUS. I'm sticking with my s3 thankyouverymuch - at least I get 16gb internal and 64gb microSD. I don't get how a 64GB 3g ipad is cheaper than the iphone. I just don't get it.

I think the service providers have a large role to play in that. If the phone were cheaper, it'd be hard to rope people in to these ridiculous contracts.

And, yeah, 650MX?

...sold? Let's see if I can convince the wife to finally give up on PCs.

I've never had an apple desktop before, and I don't really plan to, but that new iMac was the standout from today. Decent flash and storage sizes.

I'd have to see the ipad mini before passing judgment. I love the kindle but it doesn't display PDFs well at all.

With only a 1TB disk, the mac mini i dead in the water. I don't know what they were thinking really.

I'd just like to address these two points.

1) Yes the PPI is lower on the ipad 2 but I'm betting they're using a much higher quality panel to make up for it. The AMOLED on your S III is pentile meaning it has worse colour reproduction and since it's Pentile more fuzziness than a good quality standard LCD panel. That being said it sucks, because I have very little doubt Apple will throw out a iPad Mini Retina next year.

2) Yes it's a much weaker processor, but the iPad 4th Generation is pushing four times as many pixels as the iPad Mini. Again it sucks but it is pretty sufficient.

Also yeah pricing does suck quite a bit. The 32gb version will cost $429, the 32gb Nexus 7 that will be be released shortly will cost $250. Despite this I know this will sell like hotcakes, especially to anyone who is only comparing the devices from the keynote. I kind of wish Apple would grow up in this aspect, Google had the common courtesy not to trash your product, you could do the same.

Otter: People really buy All-in-One's for portability? Why didn't he just by a Macbook Pro or something surely that would have been 100x more portable? It just strikes me as really odd.

It's nothing new, as I'm sure a few old time LAN partiers around here could admit to. tounge.gif

Basically, the screen size allows for a better sharing experience, and a lot nicer for editing in particular. Consider that a 27" laptop would be absurd.

It's not like you'd carry it with you on your person, either. wink.gif The computer cart is a staple of many photoshoots these days, and whatever you can do to minimize it, the better!

I think another thing to consider is, especially in these days where urban living is more like a human game of tetris, the real estate you save from a big giant tower is considerable. So there's that.

But ultimately... it's just freakin' cool. tounge.gif

As for the ppi on the iPad mini - as an iPad 2 user I'd have no complaints at all.

I'm still not drinking the iPad kool-aid. I might have if the iPad mini was less expensive, maybe $300 or cheaper. But I have a desktop, I have a phone. I just don't feel the need for anything in between. But that's just my personal opinion.

It's one of those things that you won't find indespensible until you've had it for a while. Not the iPad specifically, but a tablet in general. You can read the Internet like you'd read a book or magazine. It was a game changer for me.

to be honest, when I got my 1G iPad, it was the best purchase I had made bar none. I'd use it for everything and never gave it a rest. It would be the first thing I'd use when I woke up and the last thing before I went to bed. its a very useful tool for college. That being said however, all it does now is gather dust on my desk. I can't put my finger on why exactly but it could be a combination of the following factors:

1. General crappiness in terms of hardware. it crashed all the time due to lack of Ram. Everything was slow and sluggish

2. Os being so closed and android being so flexible in comparison

3. fuziness of the screen.

4. Its useful in college, but cumbersome to carry around at work.. and I work in I.T. theres also no real use for a tablet in my line of work.

That being said however, my S3 being pentile or not doesnt really make a difference. Its as sharp as my mate's oneX at this size and both a hell of a lot sharper than the 1024x768 res on the first two iPads

I was about to buy an iMac until I heard about the event. I wasn't even expecting them to update it until next year. Now I'll just wait until December.

...not true, not at all. With boot camp (and the high end imac) you'll be able to run every current game at high to full settings.

Guys, I'm in a dilemma here. Should I go for the 32GB Nexus 7 when it comes out or get the iPad Mini? Sure, the specs are better on the Nexus 7 and it's cheaper but the iPad has a sh*tload of more apps, it's build quality is better and not to mention the resale value. The iThread may be a wrong place to ask, but it seems quite active atm, so I guess I'd get more response here. So what do you guys think?

I have a PS3. I don't play games on my pc. And I'm almost done with gaming completely. Windows makes me angry.

I'd say have a search of the app store for apps you know you will use, and then see if they're compatible with android devices too. My life is basically sponsored by Apple (I'm totally kidding - but not really), so my opinion is somewhat biased. Definitely get to know both devices though so you make the best choice for you. Nothing worse than buying something and then a week later thinking you should've bought something else!

Depends, really, on what you'd want to do with it, and how you feel with them. Sure, iPad mini will have a higher resale value... because you pay a crapload more for it in the first place. wink.gif

I would try to play with both and make your decision based on that. There are tons of awesome android apps and having a google device would hopefully mean you're getting the ultimate Android experience.

I'm just a big apple guy, mainly because I use apple for work. Makes sense to integrate everything for me. The vast majority of time spent on my iPad is browsing the internet and watching videos. Some games soak up a lot time, now and again, though. wink.gif

Edit - keep in mind that there is a huge jailbreak/cydia community out there, should "openness" be a concern for you. Emulators are super fun on the iPad, and you can even pair it with a wiimote to play old NES/SNES/etc games.

Thanks for the advice guys. I don't know, everything just pulls me toward the iPad. It's all about the apps. iPad really has a huge variety of different tablet apps, whereas I've heard people complain about the Nexus 7 having mostly stretched out mobile apps. Nexus 7 + iOS-like app choice would be amazing.

Has anyone ever used onyx? I've ran it and it says the startup disk needs repairing. (the iMac has become very sluggish these past months.

Would I lose any data on the disk if I repaired it?

^ Wowo, I thought someone would've given you an answer by now.

Yes, I'm pretty sure your hard disk would be completely wiped in the reformatting.

Once, somehow the file table became corrupted on my old MBP but I think I just reinstalled the OS from CD.

If you can back up your data to some other media you'll be fine to restore the system. If you're concerned about all your settings -- I was actually able to migrate the whole OS onto a portable hard drive via the tools that are available in the options at boot.

Quick question, hope someone knows the answer.

I am away on business in the next week and I use facebook for my work, now with the data charges, roaming etc its going to cost a fortune.

Does anyone know if I take a picture on my iphone 4s, that could be like 2/3meg in size, if I upload direct to FB using the FB app, I know FB shrinks the pics. Does anyone know how much data I will use? I checked FB and the pics are under 200KB, but does FB re-size after they have been uploaded, or before?

The picture must be uploaded then shrinked. Maybe some website offers shrinking picture before the upload process, but I'm afraid facebook is not one of them. I always re-size the picture and convert to JPEG format before uploading, either I have to wait for hours until BMP or large PNG pictures gets uploaded.

Digital cameras often takes big JPEG pictures, although you can open the picture with Paint, and re-save it with another name. You will see huge drop of the file size smile.gif

Does anyone have the Macbook Pro 13" Retina Display? Also, is it worth getting? I'm looking into upgrading my 2010 Macbook Pro, and have around 1,500 I'm willing to spend.

Should I go for it? Yay or nay?

A repair isn't the same as a reformat. It *should* be fine but backup beforehand just in case.

it turns out repairing the disk temporarily solved the problem, but after a week it got worse than it was before. OSX was having kernel panics just by simply unplugging USB drives. Anyhow I ended up doing a full clean install of ML. Wiped the Hard disk of everything and didnt bother carrying over any settings or files from the old installation. Now what could really speed things up is if i can get my hands on a fusion drive. I'm hoping these are standard SATA Drives. I'll probably end up buying one if they get sold as spares for the newer iMacs.

Depends what you're using it for. If you're planning on doing stuff like lots of image editing, and things requiring the higher-resolution screen, then definitely. If not, then I'd recommend getting the standard 15" (has a much better GPU than all the 13" models) or an upgraded non-Retina 13".

Spaghetti Cat

Got a 27" Thunderbolt Display yay!!! Looks beautiful and is a huge jump from my lil 15" laptop screen.

I have one issue though...I've found that closing the laptop lid is really useful, but my gaming controller isn't always working.

When I go to boot up San Andreas sometime it works and other times it doesn't. Only restarting seems to get it to recognize.

Anyone else have these issues?

Thanks
