Okay, I just accidentally bought a $20 app on the Mac App Store using a Gift Card. Stupid, I know. Is there anything I can do to get my money back and use it on another app? whatsthat.gif

...you could try to send a nice email and ask for your money back. I know they have the architecture to deal with this as in some countries they're legally forced to provide a return option. Who knows. A kind word in the right ear goes a long way.

Speaking of which, I'm scoring a bit of a discount on my new macbook. Still a chunky piece of cash, though. Can't wait until I get it! Fully loaded!

Sent the e-mail and got my refund! Didn't really think they would, guess this was kinda surprising.

Oh, by the way I think I might have downloaded something that might have infected my Mac with a WhiteSmoke virus. Apart from the unchangeable search bar and slow Mac performance no other symptoms have been shown.

Any idea how to remove this? I've never dealt with a virus before.

I've never got infected with a virus before. I've only detected Trojans but they are easy to take care of.

this link might help, that was just from a Google search. How do you think you got infected anyway? Do you have any anti-virus programs? I use ClamXav, it's a free program but apart from that I have no experiences with virus detection/removal.

I wonder how well this puppy's gonna run games. Will be nice to play Skyrim with a few more of the shiny bits turned on. But MP3? Can't wait to find out.

The retina Macbook looks really nice but I don't think I'd go for a laptop that big. For me 13" seems like the perfect size. Wouldn't mind the top of the range 11" Macbook Air with the Core i7 2GHz upgrade though, comes to £996 with the education discount. However I don't have any reason to upgrade as my Macbook Aluminium is running really well with 8GB RAM and an SSD even if it is coming up to 4 years old.

So, I'm planning on getting a MacBook Pro in a couple of months when I start college. Of course I'm going for the i7 and want a really powerful machine, not that I'm into PC gaming or anything, I just want to have a fast computer to run with.

I've never had a Macbook but most of my friends have them, now with the announcement of the new MacBook Pro, should I spend extra money to get them or buy a current-gen MacBook? I mean, is the difference between the soon-to-be-released MacBook too different from the current-gen that I should spend that much extra money on it?

It's already released.

They've kind of done it like this - they've update the MacBook Air and the Macbook Pro. And they've introduced a new line: The Macbook Pro Retina.

Frankly, all of the machines are super great. I have a lot of writer friends who swear by their Macbook Airs. It all comes down to what you need out of the machine and how you plan on packing it around with you.

I went with the high end because, hell, it's the first time in my life I can afford it, and it's a tax writeoff. Plus, I'm really going to milk it for all the rendering power I possibly can. Unless you're going to be working with any highend software, video, or photography - you'll be happy with any of the new machines.

Hey do you guys think this is decent price for these 4G (x2) RAM cards for my iMac?

http://astore.amazon.com/shouldigetit23-20/detail/B001MX5YWI - Currently it's $39.99.

Also I haven't upgraded my RAM before on my iMac and haven't opened that tray area directly under the monitor. I have a late 2009 model so I think it only has the two slots but if it has four would it still be okay to the 8G with the 2G already there?

There are 3 2009 iMacs. 2 of them are pretty much the same; 20in only 2 RAM slots max of 8GB. The 3rd one is 21.5in with 4 RAM slots max to 16GB.

When I click on the link the price is $42.99. Newegg has similar RAM for $45-50.

So jealous. I've been heading to both my local Apple Stores fairly regular in the slim hope I'm there just after a delivery but no luck so far.

I'm in need of some help atm, I was wondering if it was possible to download Skyrim on my 13" Macbook Pro.

Now, I'm pretty sure you can by booting windows but, I don't want to go through all the trouble of installing the bootcamp just to play Skyrim.

I heard there were these things called ports or something? And Cider?

Anyways, if there is a chance of doing this legally I will in no means go for it, however if that's not an option and I shall be forced to take a look into the darker depths of the internet and download a torrent or something then... I'll do it.

For Skyrim.

What year is your macbook pro? It was playable on my early 2010 15", but that was the high end processor model. Just FYI.

Cider, wine, etc, do work, or so I've read, but I strongly recommend you install bootcamp. wink.gif I don't think cider is a headache-free experience and you're going to want every ounce of power available to you.

My iMac suddenly started to make loud audible fan noises which it has never done before. I wasn't even running it under heavy processes either. Sometimes occurs when streaming videos and just happened then when I just started playing a flash game. I did download SMC Fan Control and made a 'higher rpm' setting - bumped up the 'default' fan settings of ODD 1000, HDD 1100, CPU 900rpm all to 1400rpm and the noise was reduced but not completely and the temperatures went from 47° (116°F) to 41° (105°F).

My setup is pretty well ventilated, it's not fully open but the back part opens up under a shelf and it faces an open window about 45cm away. The noise is still there but not as loud, anyone with more experience with this offer any solutions?

I have yet to perform a SMC reset but I don't know how, the instructions were confusing to me. Also anyone recommend some settings and average temperature/rpm readings? What should I look out for in the ranges of risky rpm/temperature?

Intel Core 2 Duo, 3.06 GHz

Bus Speed: 1.07 GHz

RAM: 4GB

HDD: 500GB

EDIT: iStat Menus has been one of the better monitor programs and looks quite nice too, just found this out when doing research.

MBP is around early 2011 or finals 2010. It's a 13" if that matters.

I installed bootcamp, which will hopefully come in handy with stuff other than Skyrim. I asked a friend to lend me the game when I get back home to see if it works, and if it does, I'll buy it myself. However, before I even ask her for it, I was wondering if my machine would suppor it.

These are my specs;

Processor 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo

Memory 8 GB 1067 MHz DDR3

Graphics NVIDIA GeForce 320M 256 MB

Software Mac OS X Lion 10.7.2

If that doesn't meet the requirements then I'll see about installing it on my iMac.

Can any one help me use my Xbox 360 headset as a mic? I've downloaded the HID drivers for the controllers but they don't recognize the wired controller.

I don't think it is possible. The wireless ones don't use bluetooth they use some other proprietary standard and the controller drivers appear to have support for the chat pad but not the wired headset.

In other news, I ordered my Retina which should be with me early August. Waiting is lame.

Edit: With ML being released today its pretty bittersweet that I have to wait till my new laptop arrives to use it unless I want to spend £20 to get it a few days early.

Haven't had time to properly poke around mountain lion, but I'm loving the subtle interface changes, the Dock is not more glasslike, Launcher is more centralized although it wastes a bit of space. Still looks more organized that the implementation on Lion. And safari, OMG SAFARI IS BLAZINGLY SMOOTH AND FAST. No more need for Omnibar plugin to get the unified bar on top which is a plus. I may as well delete chrome from my system to be honest. I also love the ability to share with twitter from wherever I am, however, I the click to tweet button on the notifications bar is not working for some reason, gotta figure it out tomorrow.

Barry Spock

Long time mac user here (well, since '07).

I'm planning to get a new 13" MBA next week. I've been using an early 08 MBP up to now, and it's still going fine but I feel like it's time to renew.

I'll definitely miss the old keyboard - am going to have to get used to not as much key travel but I am looking forward to having a machine that's light enough to carry around all the time.

Believe me I was tempted by the MBPr but it's just too expensive -- I can't justify it if I'm not a coder.

...I'm having a bit of a sh*t day. Opened up my MBP today to find a small divot in the glass of the screen. It's not noticeable, really, on a busy or dark background, but on white it almost looks like there's a drop of water or something on the screen.

This is the second (and probably not covered; my guy is looking into it for me) issue so far... I've also had my delete key get stuck down because the way the new buttons are spring loaded. Instead of, you know, how they already worked perfectly.

...pretty expensive lemon if I do say so.

Hey, need some urgent help and can't find it on Google. I am trying to access files on an external HDD attached to an iMac. I can see one file but the drive registers 91,000+ in disk utility. The file I can see is an .iso and the files I need to see are all from iPhoto. This isn't my computer and I am trying to fix it for a friend. I am hopeless with the file structure of Lion and could use some help.

I have tried:

default write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles TRUE and restarted Finder with Option click on Finder icon.

This didn't show them. I have verified the disk and even repaired it, yet, they still don't show up. I tried connecting it to a laptop running Windows but that couldn't detect it due to the drive being in Mac Extended.

I don't know what else to do and the internet doesn't seem to be very helpful without suggesting I pay $30 for some program. There has to be a way to show the files without using a third party program. Any help would be appreciated.

Are you sure it's an iso? Try mounting it.

If it just looks like an iso, but it's actually a package, right click it and choose "show package contents". I think iPhoto stores files in packages.

The .iso is for linux and it is the only file showing, even though Disk Utility sees more files on the drive, not contained in the .iso.
