When I first heard SOPHIE's material, she was still kicking around with a collective known as PC Music. It was an off-kilter take on EDM, which had the waft of insincerity that made vaporwave so appealing. It was like an ironic joke that somehow came full circle, and now it's producing music that's not only enjoyable but also iconic. Nothing born from PC Music every held that candle to me, and I was equally disappointed when SOPHIE announced new solo music which sounded stale, repetitive and uninspired. The message was positive, sure, but it wasn't anything I could get anywhere else. Imagine my shock then, when this absolute monster came out and teased a harsher side of SOPHIE that was waiting to give any aspiring alternative techno musician a run for their money. It goes to show that the music itself can be a statement all on its own.

Giving Nas' new album, Nasir, a listen. This is part of the wave of Kanye's production and involvement efforts, which are shaping up to be more EP length studio releases. I've never really paid much attention to Nas outside of his critically acclaimed Illmatic album, but this was a tempting offer simply because Kanye seems to be riding the train of success. Regardless of what you feel about him as an artist, or even as hip hop as a genre, it's hard to deny he's putting work in and making waves. Unfortunately, it's been more miss than hit for me. This is no different. Nas doesn't sound like he's making a statement here, especially when stacked against more attention-demanding releases from his contemporaries. At just under half an hour, Nas can't afford to have any filler here. Unfortunately, there's at least two tracks here which feel underwhelming and unimpressive. If you're hoping for Illmatic 2, you aren't going to find it here.

I'm not going to say it's bad, but that's only because it's really too short to make an impression. It sounds like an EP of experiments rather than an album.

I saw this for sale in my local record shop a few days ago, and only vaguely being familiar with the name, I made a mental note to have a listen on Spotify when I got home. Despite this not being my usual genre preference, I'm quite enjoying it. He reminds me of a younger, alternate reality Elton John almost, with some frankly moving piano and vocal combinations. There's some rich lyrics here and he paints quite the picture, even if it is a little tongue-in-cheek in places. Despite the tone, he doesn't take himself too seriously, but there's enough sincerity on show here where don't consider it completely satirical.
