I think V edges purely on story because as a longer game, it at least has some room to include bits and pieces that are actually good. Michael is really a great character too, though he’s wasted on V, he’d have been up there with Niko, John and Arthur in the V we never got.

That's true. Michael was already a good character in the GTA V we got but compared to Niko, Arthur etc. he isn't that great because the game doesn't take itself seriously and it's more about over the top missions than character depth

On second thoughts, the segment from Prologue to around Hood Safari (before the FIB/Merryweather Heists) was pretty good and with some 20 missions quite comparable to TBOGT's length. I think GTA V did that part slightly better than the story of TBOGT so I actually might lean with V after all.

But then again, overall I still like the story of TBOGT better so I voted GTA V. I'd rather not deal with the FIB/Merryweather/family drama.

It's always a great feeling seeing a topic you createe over five years ago bumped up to front page again. Back when I went by NikoVercetti112.

I think you've hit the nail on the head. Everyone credits the story going astray starting with Fame or Shame. Granted that mission could have been handled a hundred times better, the story doesn't go completely down the sink until Blitz Play.

TBOGT is worse only because it is so short and doesn't have a very good story. GTA V has a variety of characters, missions, etc while TBOGT has like 20 missions and the game is over lol.

Without a doubt, GTA V! TBOGT’s story isn’t exactly as good as IV or TLAD’s but I think it’s FAR superior to V’s. Hey, at least TBOGT didn’t have any government missions. And yes, I know that IV and TLAD had government missions too, but those were kept under massive control, which was a good thing!

Kinda unfair to compare a DLC to a full-fledged game, but at the end of the day, I'll take nightclubs over being an asskisser for the FIB

The two games are very similar to each others when it comes to humor, types of characters and overall vibe, but I voted for GTA V, even though it's a full-size title compared to the expansion pack that TBOGT is.

After all, as opposed to GTA V where the FIB and Merryweather are the main foes on the long run, TBOGT has more focus on traditional crime organizations as far as story goes, even though it still feels lacking compared to the previous titles (including TLAD, which is still an expansion pack anyway). Also, while they're still an annoyance, most of its characters are not exactly as much of a disturbance as characters like the Townley family, Philips (I don't hate him, but still), Denise, Weston, and such. Not to mention that, as much as Bulgarin's antagonism is rushed, he's still nowhere as bad as Haines or Devin, and I still find Luis to be a more relatable protagonist than Trevor and Franklin.

It is interesting that TBOGT, despite being just a DLC, offers a world with characters that definitely feels a lot larger and believable than GTA V.

And that is what I value more in an open-world game.

I suppose GTA IV's world-building is the reason why TBOGT enjoys this advantage but characters and aspect of the former doesn't make a large enough impact. So I would say TBOGT, despite one of my least favorite stories, stands well on its own. GTA V's story feels more of a DLC in comparison if you exclude the Online part.

GTA V is definitely worse. TBOGT was short yes, a bit wacky yes, but it was definitely far more interesting to see the more brighter and fun side to Liberty City than that stupid FIB, government-dominated crap that I found so boring in V.

V indeed.

I picked neither. Why? Because both of them aren't even that bad of stories. Writing was off, sure, but they both managed to give you some fun and exciting missions and I don't mind a subpar story as long as we got good gameplay IMO.

honestly i think its sad and pathetic that people choose gta 5 as a worse story than a much smaller dlc. of course everyone has their opinion thats fine. well here is mine. i think gta 5 is a great game and a great story. just because its not as dark or gritty as gta 4 was. does not mean its bad. in fact i think its just as great of a story as any other gta. including gta 4. of course i will be the first one to admit the story was not perfect. but it is still much better than tbogt. miles ahead of it. i mean even the protagonist is probably one of the worst gta protagonists ever. i would say franklin and luis are about even in terms of how good they are as protagonists. but trevor and michael are so much better. i would say niko level. i know people will disagree with me but i dont care. tbogt story is somewhat decent. it had some cool missions and some interesting characters. but it is not long enough to really enjoy it. and i dont find tbogt story that interesting in the first place. so overall i think tbogt was a fun unique dlc to add to gta 4. but i certainly dont think the story is even close to the level that gta 5 is at.

Well, even though it's an expansion pack, it's still down to personal preference. I know people who, for example, prefer the story of The Lost and Damned to GTA III's, and hell, even to Vice City's and San Andreas's (including me). As long as it's engaging, well written, rich of details, filled with likable and relatable characters, and gives the traditional crime organizations the expected involvement from a GTA story, I can see why.

IV's dark, gritty storyline has NOTHING whatsoever to do with the fact that I dislike V's story. To me, V's story to me was simply very boring and uninteresting for the most part, so much so that I even preferred TBOGT's story over it. That really is it, it's as simple as that.

Problem with people that defend GTA V's story by saying it doesn't had to be like IV, do not pay attention to the actual complaints being made here.

When I first heard about GTA V being worked on, I thought about Vice City. Because it came after GTA III so I assumed in HD universe, after IV, you would get something of Vice City caliber.

Vice city was a game where you get screwed in start to not only start fighting back but end up taking over the mansion of the guy who screwed you over and become the big crime boss in the entire city, right in the middle of the game! It was fun, wacky and awesome. GTA V's story in comparison is a downer story. You are someone's bitch, and unlike other GTA games where the protagonist finally decide they had enough and start planning the downfall of their abusive overlords, in V you continue to stay someone's bitch despite you being some big shot being told by the game until your abusive overlords sabotage themselves and you just arbitrary decide to put them out of their misery at which point the story just ends. The game becomes empty and hollow the moment you gain your freedom. Rarely you get the chance to be a badass.

That's the problem with V's story. Instead of escaping reality and having fun, we are put in a frustrating FIB's bitch simulator.

After finishing GTA V a few months back the story finally grew on me. Sure it's no GTA IV or RDR 2, but it's way better than it's given credit for and this is coming from someone who was a staunch critic of the story.

TBOGT is the weaker of the two by far regardless if it's just DLC or not since TLAD is superior in every way despite being shorter. I've finished TBOGT a couple of times and honestly Luis is as dry, stock and one dimensional as they come. People say Franklin's boring, but atleast he has a motivation to try and better himself. Luis simply just isn't very interesting. It feels like the only reason we play as him is because playing it with Tony would be weird, but Luis just feels like a side character to Tony's story lol. Not to mention some of the dumb and annoying characters it introduced like Mori, Yusuf and they ruined Bulgarin.

GTA V has its issues, but I can't deny its memorable moments stick out more like Trevor's descent into madness, Bury the Hatchet etc. The only things that stick out in TBOGT are the crossovers with GTA IV and TLAD....😕

I respect GTA V does it own thing with vigilance, but TBGOT is tethered to two games that are often considered to have the best stories in the series. It's the odd one out. Like that shameful third movie in a franchise that tries to be edgy and "cool" to differentiate itself for the sake of it.

Actually, yeah V probably does have a better story than TBOGT, and to be deeply honest I would say it does when looking at it in a technical manner. But the thing is foor me, is that I still found V's story far less interesting and more boring than TBOGT's story, that is the best way I can put for myself at least.

V is infantile compared TBOGT in terms to the story. Everyone is so memorable in TBOGT, I forgot what were up against in V, sometimes doing jobs and then getting f*cked over. I would have loved in V to actually rob banks and do heists and have Davey and Haines go after MFT instead of helping them AND have MFT go on the run through blaine county and such. Then in the end game you could betray T or M with franklin to not go to prison or use canon to try to buy your way out of going to prison by killing targets like Madazo, Cheng,  and other underworld criminals.

They both sucks but Tony's worse. GTA IV main story was really good on the other hand, very dramatic and rich despite a small map...

TBOGT.

GTA V was pretty good for the most part, it's just it becomes a mess towards the end. V had lots of potential, but the Heists and other things make up for it. TBOGT was the weakest DLC for IV and wasn't as good as the main story or TLAD. The only thing I really like about TBOGT was the colours and more vibrant setting, which made it a unique experience when you beat the main game.

The Ballad of Gay Tony.. Unnecessary and stupid. Why couldn't they create a DLC based on Liberty City / Alderney Mafia? That would be much better.

unpopular opinion, i personally like the FIB element, but i think it required more depth to the storytelling of it. Overall, I like TBOGT better.
