So why didn't anyone care about Ryder? [Spoilers]

Ryder was more just a street punk who was also a snitch/traitor and not really going big time in the gang world.

He represented at the cartel meeting, that is not a person "not really going big time".

Where did the "Snitch" come from?

Using found audio files, someone recreated Ryder's original demise

Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay better.

Simple. Ryder's betrayal was never going to originally happen. Big Smoke was supposed to be the only one who betrayed the Grove. But Rockstar didn't know what to do with Ryder, so they turned him into a traitor instead and did a pretty perfunctory job on it. It really bother me how Ryder is CJ's childhood friend yet the latter doesn't even mention his friend until he is about to kill him. The least CJ could've done is to ask his friend why he would turn his back on him.

Anybody who constantly turns on people or organizations the way he did is your typical snitch/snake in the grass (out for themselves only). In fact Ryder was a very obvious snitch and traitor.

But hey, there's one good thing about that. Ryder finally found his water there.

it disturbed me to no end how nobody gave a sh*t about ryder. hes cj childhood friend but all it takes for him to 100% forget about ryder is "he tried to f*ck your sister" pretty sh*tty excuse. also how sweet doesn't care either ryder tried to protect his mom but sweet just ignores him.

Cesar is his friend.. and he sure as hell did f*ck his sister. So yeah that was lame.

How would you know if Ryder tried to f*ck Kendl? Was there any hints or anything like it? How would Cesar know that when he didn't even know CJ until Kendl became his girlfriend? How do we know if Cesar wasn't just saying that to make CJ feel better about killing his homie? Come on man.

It really annoys me how no one even mentions Ryder after his betrayal. I mean one moment, he's CJ's friend and part of the Grove Street. And the next minute, he turns into a traitor spontaneously, and finally, after he gets killed off, everyone acts as if there was never a character named Ryder in the whole game. Not even Sweet asks about what happened to Ryder after he gets out of jail. Hell, CJ didn't even mention Ryder when he told him about Smoke's betrayal in the mission The Green Sabre. So Sweet doesn't even know about his betrayal. I don't even know what the hell was going on.

The Mysterious One

I agree with all of this. Even back then, I thought that Ryder's demise was just dull. Big Smoke was made out to be the secondary antagonist, enough that you had been hunting him down throughout the whole game. I know Tenpenny made a lot more appearances than Smoke did, but at least Smoke also appeared on "Entertaining America" with OG Loc to show where he had been in between "The Green Sabre" and "End of the Line."

The thing with Ryder is that you go and break up that drug deal with the Ballas and the Rifa, and what do you do? You either chase him on a boat or you can just snipe him from the pier. When I played this back then, I was like "That's it?" All Ryder said when you chased after him was "Can't stop me, punk!" or "I'm a mother****in' genius!"

At least Pulaski got a final cutscene after you gun him down and he was definitely a guy who you hated the moment you first see him. I liked how the writers made him so odious at the start and Chris Penn (RIP) did a damn good job at playing that character. There could have been one last little bit of dialogue between CJ and Ryder.

If Ryder was taken out of the two missions he appears in after his betrayal, honestly, nothing would have changed at all, he didn't really contribute anything.

Another thing I wanna add is that all the hate Ryder gets is just way over-the-top. I mean it's one thing to express your opinion, but to talk about it endlessly and disparage someone who actually likes him is just going way to far. I mean people talk about how much they hate him even in posts that talk about favorite characters rather than least favorite character. I remember when I was with the other guys in high school talking about the characters on the game, one of them actually tried to swing at me all because I said that Ryder was my favorite character in the game. Whoever dislikes Ryder can call me whatever they want, because no matter how much hate he gets, Ryder IMO had the best personality of the game outside of his betrayal. He was rude, brusque, and hot-tempered, and those attributes gave him that 90s gangster flavor, making him the most cohesive character of the game. People can say whatever they want, because in reality, Ryder is really no worse than Pulaski or Catalina for that matter. At least he was CJ's best friend from childhood and was actually cool with him before he left to LC.

the vehemence some people express toward other persons comments regarding Fictional Characters can be amusing.

So hold on! One of them actually swung on you just because you said that Ryder was your favorite character? Wow. I've never seen anybody make such a big deal of a fictional character from a video game. But yeah. I agree with everything you said. Apart from his betrayal, Ryder is by far the most underrated character in GTA history.

Yeah. I mean it's one thing to dislike a character, but to constantly speak about it in even the posts that aren't even germane to that and criticize someone who like him is just annoying. And I agree. Ryder's personality outside of his betrayal really isn't any worse than Pulaski or Catalina. Hell even OG Loc is a much more dislikable character than Ryder. At least Ryder was actually real before he joined the Ballas, unlike Loc.

Honestly, Ryder shouldn't have been a traitor to begin with. Smoke was an important role to betraying Grove Street, and CJ only mentions him betraying him. So Smoke should've been the only traitor. Ryder should've stayed on CJ's side. He'll smoke his last joint and finally quit for good. Then he'll work with CJ and the two, along with Cesar, would go on crazy missions altogether. That would've been more interesting. I think R* made Ryder a traitor spontaneously because they had no idea what to do with him when the MC would leave to a different city.

Ryder is based off of the desist rapper EAZY-E may they both rest-in-peace

Based on what?

"Coinsidence," says Rockstar.

These are cartoon figures why would they intentionaly use a likeness that they would have to license?

But, this will be a neverending discussion.

There are only so many faces and variations. Maybe the Artist had a face in the back of the mind when rendering the illustration. I don't think we will ever know for sure, other than the statement "Coincidence."

In the mission Drive Thru, based on the answer Ryder gave and the way Smoke tried to shut him up, I feel that CJ would have had to bury a brother instead of a mother if the plan had succeeded. Then there are all those cryptic comments he made to Carl about 'You don't know what's going on." Ryder was in on it from the beginning. Like Smoke, they used Carl to move their plan forward. I realised early on that something was wrong with Smoke (his initials BS for one) and the way the cops seemed to always hang around them. That's why I never really warmed to him. But a lot of people tend to like that JJ Evans type of character. I certainly don't hate the character because he never really stood out for me and what I expected him to be, he was.

Definitely, his death scene could have used a bit more seasoning.

He was such a cool character. Though initially he seems to be rude to CJ('It's embarassing to be seen with you' and ' 'You still a busta to me'), he later forms quite a good team with him('He's f*cking with Grove Street. You down?'). R* just didn't know what to do with him,so they kill him, and that to how! CJ and Ryder should have killed Smoke together.....

Ryder was drug-riddled, ignorant, and just an asshole. He always made fun of CJ.. Big Smoke at least sometime helped. Though Ryder did deserve a cutscene after being shotd in Pier 69.

Yeah. Ryder should've stayed with Grove Street. They should've had Ryder work with Sweet during the Green Sabre mission and had him taken to the Badlands along with CJ. Ryder could smoke his last joint, give up the weed for good, and tag along with CJ to do missions in the Badlands. Imagine how great that would be: CJ, Ryder, and Cesar working together to do missions in San Fierro. That would be kickass.

Agreed. CJ was only focused more on Big Smoke. So Smoke should've been the only traitor. It would be cool seeing Ryder working with CJ and Cesar in SF. That's what would've made the storyline better. Ryder is such an underrated character.

Considering that Ryder tried to rape CJ's sister among other things, I'd say his death was well deserved. Just another basehead.
