i haven't really got any directions yet, i'm outside this abandoned manufacturing facility at the moment and i can'get into because i don't have a grenade or something.

i'm not sure if i'm even supposed to be there

I saw few ones locked too, mainly observatories, but the same problem, i don't have any powerful gun yet. You can break in with melee attack but it will take ages and attract several drone waves.

People what should I look for to get a better tool? Already have found lots of technologies and blueprints for it, inside shelters, but I'm stuck with 5 slots. I saw one to sell in those bases but it only had one more slot (6), high price and was missing some basic attachments so I skipped it. I need something to get gold faster. Is that possible with upgrades?

I'm reluctant to advance because there's a moon on this system with gold everywhere and the surface is clear which make it ridiculous to find.

I'm hunting suit upgrade pods

Since I was farming cash today, I decided to do the same...

I'm gonna have to leave this system soon or I'm never gonna leave. I'm on the 3rd planet now and they've all been stuffed with emeril.

I did just have a "wtf?" moment though. I like grenading the landscape and making tunnels to see where I'll come out (it was a great surprise tactic in Quake online). I just dug a deep, deep pit and then picked a direction and started tunneling. After a while I decided to come up and see where I was, but I came out in a cave system. I've spent quite a bit of time in the caves so far as I think they're so well made, but this one was different. It had no entrance. I can only assume that it was created specifically to be there for me. I had no idea it was *that* generated!

It's not the tool - they're all basically the same (just look different and have more or less slots). You need to make the plasma launcher add on, if you don't have it. It's the tool's secondary fire (L1/LB). I honestly don't remember how I first got it, but I think I've had it all along.

So the plasma is better for mining than the mining beam itself? Guess my solution for now will be unassembling some other attachments.

I'd say the mining beam is better for mining, both by hand and in your ship. The beam is also much better for combat in space, but that may change with upgrades I've not got yet.

You need the plasma grenades for things like the door you described, and there are sometimes big vats of elements outside buildings and they need to be destroyed too.

Just keep playing and you'll get more and more opportunities to change your multitool. Mostly, I find them on the wall inside building where you meet aliens.

Well I named a system draker and all the planets inside to draker 1 through 5 was going to name the moon Radnox as it had those resources on it but accidentally pressed circle and it named it ragn. There's an earth like planet there!

Well I named a lifeless planet with a tight atmosphere infernoria and the two moons looking above purgatoria (extremely hot and agressive drones/animals) and rapturia (small heat storms, a lot of animals and beautiful gray rocks, red safe water)

In the same system there's a radioactive planet I called fallout and a moon that looks white from distance I haven't doscovered yet. If it's snowy, I'll call it skyrim!

The plasma grenades are also very good for mining Iron. Have you noticed that it can take a while to mine Iron, and that you get a hole bunch when the object is destroyed? Next time try grenades. It's much quicker. I also use them for carbon if the object is big. Edited by C64fanatic

Turns out the moon was snowy indeed. A wonderful landscape with long rivers, white/black/greeny mountains and an awesome view over to Fallout. No wildlife at all sadly, but the place is beautiful enough to keep me going for the hours to come.

Just got my 36th slot on my suit, they're like 230k units plus now. Crazy, but I can carry anything I need to now. So much trade potential. Got a real nice looking ship now as well, but it's only 20 slots, I could use a few more (though with the suit it's not such a big deal now).

This game has f*cked me right up.

This game feels like it could be my kind of thing - problem is that I would have to play it on my girls ps4, and that would mean that I couldn't just play it for hours straight, long into the morning.

I'm considering buying it, primarily for when I am under the influence or something.

Judging by opinions here and elsewhere, this game looks like it will be remembered as a cult classic, rather than a booming success.

Dang. The planet I'm currently on, Sinistus in the Budmuhnqai system, basically has drop pods and obscene amounts of Gold on it. And that's it. Nothing else. Oh, and the most chilled sentinels I've ever seen. May be here a while...

Are there any hostile sentient beings on planets you have landed on? Anything close to towns or cities? I am just wondering what type of stuff you see.

Also, does the game just generate random species, or are planets and their inhabitants kind of related in a Darwinian sense, and are situated in ecosystems with carnivores and herbivores?

The species are largely random, though there's a little repetition across the board, which I think is to be expected really. It's not so varied that on one planet you'll see shimmering blobs of energy and another a bipedal humanoid. The animals are mostly quadrupedal, avian or aquatic, which a very good amount of variety within those constraints. And there's some batsh*t mental stuff but it's generally a combination of those three jammed together. I've seen some pretty bizarre stuff. There are carnivores, herbivores and all manner of gender-bizarre species.

Plants are the same, but this is fine by me as you need them to be recognisable as you need them for resources. I can't say I'm disappointed by what I've seen so far.

There are certainly hostile creatures, though their sentience is debatable. I've been attacked by crab beasts and dog-horse things, to mention but two, though I wouldn't class them as advanced sentient beings. Encounters with advanced life forms are for the most part dialogue tree based and you can occasionally say the wrong thing and get a textual headbutt from an alien. There is space combat and it's just simple enough to be fun and not a chore.

If I had to describe this game to someone hesitating on buying it, I'd say this:

No Man's Sky is the video game equivalent of a bleak, rambling, existential sci-fi novel that both excites and bores you at the same time. You will see weird things, you will fly really cool space ships but above all, you will explore planets looking for resources to enable to get to the next planet to explore for resources. It is an endless cycle of mining and flying. And that's what's brilliant about it. You do nothing, but when you do it, you feel like you're doing something.

If you like flying around and mining and don't want too much to think about beyond where you'll get your next batch of Plutonium, you will enjoy this game. I think it's one to smash for a hundred hours then return to when you feel like a fly about for a few hours. There appears to be two story lines of sorts but I'm not really following them, I'm just out there, inventorying the galaxy like a shopkeeper doing a stock take.

Signatures are dumb anyway.

People have been data-mining through the game files recently:

Some interesting bits:

  • The game runs on a heavily modified version of the Unity engine.
  • The names of the planets on the opening screen are taken from a pre-generated file.
  • Your ship doesn't have a model in space, it's just a floating dashboard.
  • The E3 2015 demo was partially scripted (Woah, big surprise there /s).
  • There are no UI elements or mentions of Multiplayer of any sort.
  • You can modify the fonts and text really easily.
  • A player model exists in the game files but is unused - you're just a floating camera with some collision detection.
  • For "Multiplayer" - there's no packets being sent that contain player X,Y,Z co-ordinates - only Discovery data is being transmitted to Hello Games' Azure server.
  • There are some test files for "PS3", "360" and "ORBIS (PS4)" - possibly left overs from Joe Danger.

I discovered a system 9 systems away from my current location called 'nothing good here', named by another player. If you press right on dpad on the galaxy map, it directs you to the next discovered system. It's kind of random I guess? The current map system is reallly confusing and I hope they patch it as soon as possible.

You can then put a way point to that system. I've found my recent galaxy that way and set a waypoint so I can always come back there. In case you ever come across the Bethesda star system, it's mine :D

I've yet to see anything from another player. I gave up naming stuff myself with the odd exception here and there almost immediately. It's fun for a little while but ultimately, useless other than for reminding yourself of good stuff. Naming things in such a boring way ("nothing good here") is going to make this game really annoying really quickly.

I'm trying to name every planet and every star system and most animals.

Btw, if I come across a boring looking and dangerous planet, I'm moving on to the next without looking back.

I've not done any actual testing, but I'm pretty sure that the reason the grenades are quicker is because you're getting less. I noticed that a grenade would take out a chunk of an element and I'd get 2 units of it, but I'd get 10+ units for using the beam for the same amount.

I'll try it properly on a specific shape (the egg shaped rock). That seems to be a consistent size & shape.

I specifically said on Iron and Carbon. You can't take chunks of those with a grenade. They keep their shape till they blow up, and you are not getting much untill they blow up. That's why it's quicker. Also if you have several plants with Carbon standing close together, as they often do, firing several grenades betweem them can give you a hole bunch very quickly.

It's not quicker on something like Heridium, Gold, or Emeril cause you'll get a lot less, and they are much rarerer too.

How do you set a waypoint? I thought that you couldn't.You can if you select a system and press square on PS4. Although as far as I know, you can only set two of these. Backtracking is a pain in the ass and I was lucky to find that bethesda galaxy. My starting planets are lost somewhere in that endless space though.

I didn't stay too long on Skyrim and am already two star systems further, coming across boring and bland planets. To be very honest, it's becoming a chore kinda..

The first few hours were a 10+ but now it's a 6-7.. I don't know. I need to come across something interesting. The text adventures are repeating themselves and new technology is nowhere to be found.

I really hope they'll patch this game in the future like they patched minecraft. I thought it'd have an appeal for months if not years but I understand why some dislike the game now.

Actually, we're probably both right and wrong. I just tested it on two (roughly) equal sized towers of heridium and got almost the same amount. Plus the plasma grenades take only a tiny amount of plutonium to recharge. Overall I'd say they're quicker (when useful - not on plutonium, for instance) and you get the same amount.
