Pilot shot dead as good as a banana?

So I am in a mission and we are in a chopper and the guy flying gets shot dead.

Now the chopper is just flying in circles and soon will crash so I ditch out and chute to the ground.

 

My question is if the pilot gets shot or driver when you are in a car with them how do you take over the controls.

Also if they leave the pilot leaves for a mission in FR...

 

On a side not how do you swap sides when you are in the back of a chopper.

 

Had a search and could not find anything so any info would be appreciated.

the only way is to jump out and as the chopper is falling fly beside it and get back in the drivers side
