The Governor
You cannot play PS3 games on PS4, and you cannot play xbox games on xbox one. However, from what I gather, Sony (I'm not sure about Microsoft) will release a program that allows you to download old ps3 games to play.

Fuzzknuckles
Because Sony and Microsoft are complete sh*ts, they've decided not to make the consoles backwards compatible. It's incredible. Possibly the worst decision in console gaming since Sony decided to remove it from the PS3. Actually, no. The worst decision in console gaming since the WiiU. Wolfhuman and Niobium 2 Signatures are dumb anyway.

But they could have made it possible, I'm certain of it. Emulation. A machine as powerful as the PS4 would be able to run a stable emulator with a PS3 game loaded. Absolutely possible. A machine as powerful as the PS4 would be able to run a stable emulator with a PS3 game loaded. Absolutely possible. Microsoft, though, have no excuses here. Hell, by that reasoning we would have already had a decent PS3 emulator on the PC then, a couple years ago. A PS4 is not going to be able to emulate a PS3 game before a PC would. The only reason why you would see it is if they re-engineered the game to add to the Playstation store like they do with older games and that is not emulation per se, that is recoding the game in a way that the PS4 would be able to play it. ChillerVapes
I don't understand why some company hasn't by now made a new console... not a new platform to compete with playstation and xbox but to actually be compatible with both formats of games and also backwards compatible with all previous versions of the consoles. It would be the ultimate gaming machine, it can be done so why is it not out?

What, like this one? http://playstation3emulator.net/ Note the big 'you can now play GTAV' thing at the top, PC players. All ps3 emulators for pc are fake. It would have been huuuge news. No, there's no way that you can play ps3 games on your pc (Or else there wouldn't have been RDR complaints for years). Also, remember the PS2 backwards compatibility in the first PS3? there were a couple of hardware models, meaning that there were actually old PS2 components inside the PS3 models. This turned out to be not really profitable, so they implemented a software emulation in some PS3 versions. Was a bit of hit and miss, depending on your games. The same goes for the PS4: It's way different than the (very odd) ps3 hardware. In fact, both the XBone and PS4 are much more like a pc now, which makes multi-platform easier to program. So yeah, for a PS4 to play PS3 games, it somehow needs PS3 hardware (which would never fit, even with the technological progress) or some sort of software emulation (which would probably work only in some cases). It's no surprise it's not backwards compatible, but if they stick to the PC components in their future consoles, it might be in the future. FranklinDeRoosevelt
Nope you can't play PS3 games on the PS4, not all games at least. AC IV, Ghosts, Watch Dogs, NFS Rivals, FIFA 14, NBA 2K14 and Live 14 are available on the PS4 at the moment. Gaikai will sort that out later on.
