FIFA World Cup 2014

cactus.

But, wouldn't they have to slaughter at least a few hundred thousand "street kids" to really make an impact on how their streets look?

That's absolute nonsense. To equate the pacification of favelas (which is still scandalous but doesn't involve systematic murder of young people) with the death squads of the military junta is something that only a naive person hoping for comments and clicks could do.

I despise the way that Brazil has handled its social problems since being awarded the World Cup, and I likely won't be watching the tournament as a small, personal, protest against it. But to make baseless assertions based on images taken out of context, is not the right way to go here -- there is enough scandal as it is without having to tell such lies.

You know what I hate. when people see that a sporting event is being held somehere were they dont agree with that countries poilitics on certain issues and try to make it about that rather than the sporting event and the people/players/staff involved that have trained years to get this opportunity. If you dont like certain issues with certain countries that's fine, but f*ck off with your holier than thou attitudes. If these issues meant so much to people then why do they only bring them up around the time of the sporting events. The World Cup is about football for fans players or anyone who is involved in whatever way, it's not so people can do their sh*tty protests that aren't going to change a thing.

This was certainly one of the most stupid posts in this thread.

You live in a f*cking decent country where corruption is not as near as bad as it is here in Brazil. Who do you think can change a country? The government don't give a sh*t, so we, the people, are the ones who have to do something, who have to try to move the country forward. And what is the best time to do it? When the whole world is watching us, so they and our f*cking government can see that we care and we will change this sh*t. You need a f*cking country to have a f*cking World Cup. We didn't ask for this event, but we were forced to accept it and we're trying to make it not look so bad for the rest of the world.

f*ck off with your stupidity and go learn something about other countries.

Just because some people might protest doesn't mean I'm going to start caring about your country.. The World Cup is what I'm interested in nothing else.

Do you not think that the politics of Brazil are kind of important in this case though? It's not just that I disagree with their politics on certain issues, it's that they have foisted the World Cup on a population that doesn't really want it, have pissed a huge amount of money up the wall due to corruption, and have the temerity to be dismayed when people speak out against them for that.

Besides, me not watching the WC is not going to make a single difference to the profit margins of FIFA -- who are the villains in this piece. I'm still going to do it though, because for me a month of football of a decent level does not merit the problems that this World Cup has caused.

Thanks for getting really angry with my post for no reason though, it really is a masterful example of how someone can grab the wrong end of the stick.

Like I give a f*ck about your country. The World Cup is what I'm interested in nothing else.

That line of reasoning is why the Brazilians are so upset. They're being exploited by a international organization so a few members of their government get to make money off of tourism and corruption, while you can set back and enjoy living in a first world country without a care in the world what goes on elsewhere/

I think most Brazilians do actually want the WC to be hosted in their country. It's just that they're unhappy with the massive social inequality and want something to be done about it. Also the way the world cup has been managed hasn't exactly been great. Multiple deaths at stadium building sites, the persecution and treatment of the poor living in the favelas, over budget and behind schedule with it stinking of corruption and mismanagement. The world cup is really a reflection of the way Brazilians feel about the wider issues in their country and it's a perfect arena for them to air their grievances. It's almost like it's become the target of the whole country's problems because it's such a massive symbol and focus point.

Also I don't see why this sort of stuff can't be discussed in here. We talk about other social and political issues in here, like racism and homophobia in football just as an example. I mean as long as it doesn't drag on and stifle the people that want to talk about the actual football I don't see an issue.

If I was a Brazilian and my government spent trizillion dollars on a High-Tech arena somewhere in the jungle (Manaus to be exact) only for 3 or 4 games to be played there, while I'm struggling to feed my children, I would be on the streets protesting all the time. The stadium is in f*cking Manaus. They don't even have a professional football team there and nobody knows what they will use it for after the WC. And people who come in this thread, complaining about the protesters, saying they don't give a f*ck about other countries or other peoples lives and so on are just utter insensitive pricks.

The same people that is protesting was all happy when they chose Brazil for the WC.

The same people goes crazy for football every week and every World Cup.

Does this mean they shouldn't protest?

Of course not but the problem is that if you make football as one of the most important things in your life and in your country,

sooner or later football will become more important than your life in your country's agenda.

It's the panem et circenses vicious circle. ;)

So basically, they were all happy to participate in other World Cup's in other countries but when they have to organize a World Cup they get angry...

Basically like the friend who likes it when other friends pay for his drinks but gets angry when he is the one who has to invite.

Do you think a country like Ghana could afford a World Cup? You basicly say that poor countries shouldnt be allowed to participate in world cups.

Your comparison is flawed.

I take your point on board. But what I was hoping to avoid was the personal attacks Hodgey and Eagles, telling people to 'f*ck off' and calling each other's country sh*t. If I see anymore of that I'll just remove those posts.

Keep it football related and respectable.

We organized a World Cup in my country in 1982 after the Dictatorship ended in 1975... Spain was poor and most of it's population where illiterate but we managed to organize a world cup and things went well.

That was in another era. The WC standards for stadiums and infrastructures in 1982 are not even comparable to what is requested by FIFA today.

Italy organized the WC in 1990. It all went relatively well but right now, the exact same stadiums, wouldn't be accepted for a modern WC.

Actually in Italy, right now, there's only one stadium within UEFA/FIFA standards: the Juventus Stadium.

Also, the fact that large amounts of its population is poor has nothing to do with the capability of a country to organize a WC.

Brazil is a giant compared to Ghana. Even Spain in 1982, economically, would be a giant compared to Ghana today.

I agree to some point with you, BUT, we all know that Brazil has always had a lot of corruption and, politicians are NOT willing to change this because they are the first ones to get large quantities of money from this. I think that it's quite hypocrite to criticize your country now, when for many years you haven't complain about corruption.

First warm up game for England against Peru later.

England Starting 11:

Hart

Johnson

Jagielka

Cahill

Baines

Gerrard

Henderson

Lallana

Welbeck

Sturridge

Rooney

I personally would start Sterling before Welbeck and see if this team works well as this will probably be our starting 11 for the first game of the WC.

We won. We won. Against one of the dominan.. Peru.

Two defenders on the scoresheet plus Tha Biter's Suarez's wife. Henderson runs like a what? Can't recall watching anything run like that.

In other news, Italy's 23 gotta be the worst team we ever had in our WC history (with the worst coach).

If we pass group phase it's a miracle.

I think we reached our lowest point in history as far as quality of players.

Worse than the 2010 squad?

On paper, theoretically, the 2010 squad was better simply cause we had still 9 World Champs in the team and a world champ coach.

But yes, 2010 was probably our worst performance in WC history against mediocre teams.

This time we have a mediocre team, a mediocre coach and we play against strong teams in group phase.

Only a miracle will take us to phase 2.
