@SouthLand

We don't even have a presence in world football, there's nothing to support them for besides a few friendlies every year. Yes, I support Bangladesh during those friendlies but they're not even a proper football team.

There's so much corruption in our national team it's not even funny. The best players in our country never get the chance to play because of political influence etc. Don't get me started. Andorra are ranked lower than us because they're in a much harder continent but we aren't even a proper football nation so don't bother giving me real life examples of your friends who are in Europe because things are a lot different here.

@TheCacti

Yeah, it's just something cultural. Things that seem odd in some parts of the world aren't in others. But yeah I see what you mean. Maybe I shouldn't have used "we" in a forum where most members are from Europe etc because I know saying that word in this case seems weird to many. I just forget sometimes.

Just because your national team struggles to make it to the world cup, that dosen't mean you have to support other countries. I only support Spain, i may like other national teams but i only support Spain.

I can't see Spain losing a top 2 spot to either Chile or Australia, I feel they'll be first in the group. I feel Italy will be the ones to fall in Group D, Uruguay seem do well one way or another.. And I really like England's squad this year. I would love to see Germany knocked out in the group stages because of all the sh*t I'll have to hear from people here if they win it but I can't see it happening. It wont be so easy for Portugal though I predict.

If we win = Spanish liberals are going to go mad and start saying on social networks things like "Spain won? Unemployment it increasing everyday what have they won?", "People celebrate goals while government does drastic reforms".

@Vercetti42

Rooting is good, if your team dosen't play a tournament. For example, i am going to root tonight for Sevilla FC on the final of the Europa League Cup. But i am not from that team.

Things like this are so easy to say when your country actually plays in the World Cup so I'm not going to bother arguing with you anymore.

At your second comment; I was mainly referring to footie banter.

Cacti, Yh Portugal seem a likely candidate because it's a pretty tough group, you've got 2 big teams and 2 teams that are still both very decent. No easy games there. Some big team from group D definitely will be out in the group stage though (if you count England, Italy, Uruguay all as big teams) , so I don't know if that can be classed really as an unexpected crash out since we know it's going to happen to someone.

I actually think Brazil could go early, even as early as the group stage. They're just going to have so much expectation on them. Lot's of social unrest too surrounding the whole tournament over there. Arguably no team in the history of the world cup will have as much pressure on them as this team will have. It's not exactly the best Brazilian team ever either, one of the weakest for a while in fact. It's a relatively young squad too and all their 3 opponents are capable of doing something, especially Mexico and Croatia.

Good point about Brazil stu. Also there is a lot of hype around Neymar to perform. Some may think home advantage is good but I think it could work against them. I can definitely see them getting out of the group stage though.

I think Argentina have a great attacking squad this year. Lavezzi, Aguero, Messi and Tevez. However it is time Messi steps up on the WC stage, if he does I can see them getting a good run.

Maybe if the group were to be more difficult, but I'm more than certain Brazil will pick up at least 7 points in the group stage, like Germany I can't see them going down that early. I can't see how playing at home will work against them. It's like Chelsea feeling the pressure to perform at Stamford Bridge.. Yeah, No.

Once again, I have close friends from Andorra and, you might think that there national team is great but actually it's not. Basically beacuse players are very "old" (+30) and their football league is like the English League Two. They haven't scored a goal god knows when...

EDIT:

Last goal they scored in 2010

But that is the problem. The expectations for Brazil to perform well are higher than in 2010 and they are playing at home. So the pressure will be high. There will be a lot of support, yes but the expectations equal the support IMO.

I didn't say they were great but they're certainly better than us. They at least have a presence to begin with; Their football league is like English League 2? Our football is like the 12th or 13th Division in England. You're comparing European football to South East Asian Football which makes no sense to me..

@Ace, every fan wants their team to do well, I just can't see the home support working against them, it's my opinion though.

On another topic:

Brazil are actually struggling to even prepare everything for the world cup on time. The BBC a few days ago reported more than 1/4 of the stadium where the opening ceremony will be held is still to be complete, found an article linked below.

http://worldsoccertalk.com/2014/05/12/brazil-struggling-to-finish-preparations-in-time-for-world-cup-2014/

Opinions? Were they too ambitious? I think so certainly.

Funny, I can't see Brazil going early at all. Mexico were absolutely abysmal in qualifying and barely crawled their way into the finals (thanks to the USA). Croatia and Cameroon will be decent tests, but even with the pressure, I see Brazil being too strong. I thought the confed cup was an ok judge of how Brazil are going to perform with a home crowd behind them and it's fair to say they're quite invigorated by it. I'd put my money on seeing them in the final.

@Preparations, I'm expecting everything to be fine. I feel like there are always these last-minute scares about not being prepared in time and yet everything goes off without a hitch (e.g. South Africa, Poland/Ukraine had the same scares).

Confed cup was just the practice though, there wasn't really any pressure. It's like how nobody feels pressure when practicing a penalty. It's only when you're actually running up to the spot and that one kick will either keep your team in the tournament or send them home that it suddenly becomes hard. It's when it's the real deal that it gets to you.

I'm not saying I think it's likely, I'm just saying it's a possibility that the immense pressure might get to them.

I am very disappointed with the way Brazil is hosting the World Cup. South Africa did a brilliant job in 2010. From a country like Brazil, I expected much more.

I don't think Brazil is going out in the group stages. It's not impossible of course but I really don't see it. The Netherlands and Portugal are the only "big" teams I expect to not make it out of the group.

Btw, is anyone here still doing the Panini Sticker albums? I had my first album when I was a little kid and I loved them. Now I'm nearly 27 and I still can't get enough of it. I'll probably still be collecting Panini stickers when I'm like 90.

are "panini sticker albums" the equivalent to what us Americans would call "Baseball cards?" To me, a panini is that sh*tty sandwich you find in airports that they press together with hotplates, so this term panini sticker album has been very much confusing me. They're just paper cards of individual players, right?

Yeah, you're basically right. Panini is just the name of the company who produces these albums.

Sometimes I'm like, "Damn, Bosnia actually made it to the World Cup." Quite an achievement considering what happened twenty years ago.

I thought you were the one who said they would set it up.

@Der_don,

No, I don't collect those. But I do happen to have some cards from the '94 World Cup. They're not Panini, but Upper Deck, which is a very popular brand of Baseball Cards here in the US. A main difference I suppose is that the pictures of the players are actions shots instead of close-up face shots (that sounds dirty..). The coolest one I have is of Brad Freidel and he has a full head of hair!

I think I'm going to hop on the bandwagon and root for Brazil again this year. I supported them last WC but this year it means a lot more because they are on their home turf and Football is religion there. So watching them win the WC would be awesome.

Think AndyGanteks is doing it again so you will have to ask him. He should open it in the next few days, give people plenty of time to predict.

@Der_Don i do collect it since 2002. Have to find a way to buy all the albums from the beginning, i reckon if that is possible, they will cost quite a lot. I have 189 missing out of 640 right now for the 2014 album. Funnily, it's mostly Bosnians(only have logo and 2 players :/), then Algiere, Cameroon and South Korea.

We've also done the online sticker game, got to 100% on the firsy days :lol: good times.

I'd say Spain or Germany are likely to win it, judging by the teams, maybe Brazil, and some other South American teams can go far in their "home" tournament too. I'm welcoming surprises or underdogs though always!

WC Prediction league coming up tonight btw, for those wondering! :)

I still have my Panini stickers albums from 1982, 1986 and 1990. :)

On topic: Brazil is going to win it no matter what. Even if they have to rob it till the last match like France did in 98. ;)

Spanish media says he is going to be ready for the World Cup but they don't know if he will make it to the Champions League Final.
