Yes but I think most English people like me feel that after all his sh*t games in major tournaments he must have one great one in him soon. If he doesn't perform well again though I wouldn't be picking him for the final group game win or lose tonight.

Despite his bad performance, he still managed to contribute with an assist playing out of position. I would like to see Roy play him up top with Sturridge.

His assist was nice, credit where due. But I feel like there have been so many competitive games for England where it seems like the attack is built around him, and it just doesn't work.

 

I can't help but wonder how the England attack would work out if he didn't start.

I think Sturridge and Rooney up top as a strike partnership is our best option so hopefully we'll see that tonight.

Simply out of curiosity, what are your thoughts on FIFA's sanctioning of Simunic shouting "za dom spremni" and getting banned for eight games? Overly politically correct?

 

Anyway, despite the negative result, I'm really happy that Australia's performance is only reinforcing the continual emergence of football as a mainstream sport in this country. Hopefully in the next decade it will be treated much like football is treated in the US; historically ignored, but due to the continual success of the national team and the development of a proper, competitive league, it has no other option than to be pushed to the forefront of people's minds. It would be fantastic if they could beat Spain, and my gut instincts are honestly telling me they might just squeeze something through. The symbolism of beating the reigning World Cup champions (even if they have been playing like complete plonks) would be potent.

 

 

When is that game? Very curious to see what the supposed weakling of the group can manage against the supposed top team. Because Australia played incredibly well against Holland (really, so much better than expected) and Spain played incredibly poorly against both of it opponents. The bookmakers must be making lots of money off this group.

 

edit: Wait, it's probably on monday right? That's when Holland plays Chile too. Another one I'm really looking forward to.

What kind of formation is that? Could work though, however Gerrard is a bit exposed.

 

It's the same team as I picked so I'll have to definetly agree with it. See how Rooney does and then if he isn't up to much bring on Barkley with 30 mins left, hopefully they dont bring Wilshere on again as he was dire against Italy.

By that logic, Baines, Johnson and Gerrard should be on the next flight home but they are still in the team. Also being played out of position doesn't do anybody any favours.

It's funny that we could lose tonight and still end up going through, as long as Italy beat Costa Rica and then if they also beat Uruguay in the final game, and as long as we beat Costa Rica in the final game by a few goals. Italy would have 9 points and then there'd be 3 teams on 3 points, with the one with the best GD (hopefully us) going through. Although let's hope it doesn't come to that.

 

I'm hoping Rooney has a good game tonight, sounds like he's going to be the one in the hole. He still owes us a good world cup performance.

Failed 2/3 big chances already. Sorry for all the folks across the pond there but at this rate England doesn't deserve to advance tbh. Not that Uruguay is doing much better but England is just very disappointing so far this tournament.
