Doc Rikowski
@insert-coin: players like Maradona, Platini, Falcão, Puskas, Di Stefano, Baggio, Pelé, Best, Zico, Crujff, Beckenbauer, Figo etc, would be great in any football era cause they're the very essence of football. Denying such an obvious truth just shows no understanding of the basics of this sport. Said with no sarcasm... That's not what I said at all, so kindly stop putting words in my mouth. Also suggesting that Maradona carried Argentina to the world cup in '86 is dishonest and quite frankly, disrespectful to what was a good Argentinian side regardless of Maradona's presence in it or not. Never mind that they only ever got that far, because he cheated, rather than solely because of his talents. Ok, if that's not what you said then what's your point? That Maradona wouldn't be as awesome as he was if he'd play nowadays? Cause that to me doesn't make sense on any logical level. The game can evolve in some aspects but the basics are still the same and that is what makes it a unique sport. That's why a player with the skill and the vision of Maradona is born every 50 years or so. He was a football genius not just a skilled midfielder. Evolution of some aspects of the game do not affect talent and skill. They can improve/enhance talent, not the opposite. Would Argentina in 86 had any chance to win the cup without him? No. Of course he played with another 10 players, if that is what you meant, but as a football genius he made the difference.
ddyoung
Ghana has been the better team since about the 30th minute, they look dangerous. Edit: F*ck, Ghana just scored. Edited June 16, 2014 by ddyoung

Messi and Ronaldo are, and will be remembered as great players. It's impossible to compare them in a logical and unbiased manner, so it is a pointless endeavour. Anything else is just opinion. Anyway, I'm done derailing, back to the world cup Edited June 16, 2014 by Insert-Coin-To-Continue

Der Süden
f*ck, was hoping for a draw. Ghana would have deserved to win imo. Jürgen Klinsmann was the coach of Germany at the WC in 2006 and we came third place. He's a great coach, but I expect this victory to be the last victory of the US at this WC. GTA_stu
I was quite impressed actually with the USA performance. They always seemed in control to an extent, even under intense pressure from Ghana. Defensively they put in a fantastic performance, especially their holding midfielders. I think the loss of Altidore is going to be massive though, they didn't really pose a threat at all apart from set pieces when he went off. With him out I just don't know if they'll be able to trouble Portugal enough. Portugal didn't seem cohesive at all though, they had no fluidity. If both teams have the same sort of game they had today then I reckon it'll be a draw. but if Portugal start clicking then they should just about win I think. Fireman
I doubt Portugal will play as insecure against the USA as they did today against Germany, especially if they've watched the performance of USA, it really wasn't a good performance, just good enough. I cucked Alex Jones
Remember when Rooney stomped on Carvalho's nuts? That's what we will do to Portugal, metaphorically.
Banks.
If USA are reacting like this over a win against Ghana then imagine if they qualify Klinsmann really is doing a good job over there though. Getting the best out the players it seems.
Hmmm nice bike
I know this happened earlier in the game, but I can't resist posting it here after finding it on Reddit. Good game though! cactus.
John f*cking Brooks. I didn't rate him highly, but he sure has won me over now. Looked like he was having a religious experience after his goal. Good for him. You can't buy moments like that. Even though we'll need to see more possession in the coming games, that was such a great win to take away given all the setbacks that we incurred. Can't believe that Altidore injury. Johannsson is a good striker, but this quick counter attacking play is not going to suit him at all if he continues to play. Great game all around. There were hardly any dull moments. And that opening was a bit surreal for my anxious self. Edited June 17, 2014 by TheCacti
ddyoung
Portugal will not be confident after that thrashing by Germany. The USA is a team flying high, and that confidence will be a deciding factor as to who goes through I think. Hmmm nice bike
Kampioen
Maradona was not just a player, he was something special. You can't understand it through YT, all the people who did see him playing live and lived in his days, like my dad, agree he was not human. It's not just what you do on the pitch, it's the charisma, the leadership, the charm you got. Just unreachable for Messi, Ronaldo or anyone else. I personally don't give a sh*t about any of this. This is football, not politics. Coin
Eutyphro
Ghana took like 70 minutes before they really started playing, and conceding that goal after a minute was dumb. I think Ghana is far better than the USA, but the USA won fairly because Ghana lost because of their own stupidity. I still think Portugal will beat the USA easily... Portugal lost against one of the best teams in the tournament, but against USA they'll definitely be confident again. Portugal lost against one of the best teams in the tournament, but against USA they'll definitely be confident again. I too think Portugal will show up against the USA much more focused and determined than their opener, pretty much because they have to at this point. Even without Coentrao and Pepe, they are still a good European side. From the USA's perspective, a draw would be an excellent result for us, seeing how Portugal's goal difference is already far inferior thanks to Germany. The key for us then will be to not get hammered by Germany also They should already be qualified at that point, so hopefully they'll take their foot off the gas a bit.
