FIFA World Cup 2014

The only countries that have made a bid and can still bid are: US, Mexico, Canada, Colombia, and Morocco.

No offense to any of these countries, but out of all of those the US would be my favorite option of all of them.

I'd like to see it in the USA, I'll go watch a few games in NYC.

I surely stand by my previous stament, worst WC that I've ever watched (9 so far)!

Brazil supporting Dilma's Presidential elections, just way to soon I guess...

No doubt Germany deservely won it (the least bad team overall), but that's only if one doesn't count the Final game, where they should have losted it on regular time.

No top goal scorer getting to the final or even semis,

Neuer in some Schumacher revival style (if you hit the ball 1st that doesn't nercessarly allows you to knock out someone after lol). Sure also Mascherano and Aguero should have been sent off, only adding to worst ref's ever since S. Korea games. ie Neymar should have been red carded against Croatia (elbowing) when Brazil was 0-1 and long before the famous "pen".

When on KO stages, each and every team just trying not to get a goal. Affraid, so very affraid (or tactics, some might say).

English guy fleeing his hotel (tickets scandal) after he saw live on TV that the Police was going for him a 2nd time lol

Ghana and Nigeria $ cases...

The cherry on top being Messi named the WC MVP, LMAO!

It can only go better in Russia, hopping that some video refs are brought on to the game but not really seeing it happening anytime soon, at least while blatter and/or platini are running the show ;)

The USA would be a good place. Though the USA does have significant poverty and immense debt. The world cup is something that mainly benefits corporations and costs money to the people. It would be awesome if it would be organized in a way that benefits people, though that is probably impossible considering the economic structures in the world today and in the FIFA.

Qatar is the worst possible place though. A desert where it is 50 degrees in summer and where slaves build the stadiums and die because of labor conditions, it hardly gets worse.

Many stadiums here in the US are built for American football (both college and professional) but can easily be used for soccer so you don't need to build any new stadiums to accomodate. Hold the final at Cowboys Stadium which is the best place here in the US to have it.

The US does have the basic infrastructure. It would be great to upgrade it where it needs to be. And there are multiple soccer stadiums now that would need to be upgraded and expanded to accommodate a world cup game.

Definitely. Chicago has Soldier Field and Toyota Park, I've already seen Man United playing at Soldier Field and it's a big enough stadium that had an upgrade in the last 10 years, so no changes would really need to be made. Toyota Park is the soccer stadium for the Fire, it was built in 2006 but it could still use an upgrade eventually, and a World Cup would certainly bring that.

It already looks way better than the World Cup opener held there in 1994.

It will probably go back to the US sooner rather than later, as a market it is the biggest commercial opportunity if the Americans start to really get into Football (we'll know when they actually start referring to it by the correct name). Not everyone thinks it would be such a good idea though:

Best world cup that I can remember as well. Although honestly I don't remember too much from previous ones. :p

I don't even really remember how we got to the final last time. I remember Italy and France being beaten pretty badly by us, but that might have been in the Euro cup two years before that. I guess that match against Spain in the final just overshadowed my whole memory of the world cup.

Italy being beaten pretty bad by which team?

Holland?

Cause that didn't happen.

Last time Italy and Holland played was EC2000 and Italy eliminated the host: Holland.

Before that only in 1978 if I'm not wrong.

Well... You are wrong.

Definitely I am.

I had completely removed that match from my memory lol

Maybe cause we beat France and then lost at penalties with Spain that year. ;)

^ If it makes you feel any better, I think the entire international football period between 1991-1994 is a repressed memory for me. Not really sure what happened, but I'm certain it wasn't good.

The only thing that pops out from the back of my mind is a little voice saying "f*ck me, what is Carlton Palmer doing up front?"

I also kinda removed from my memory the 1990-1992 era... Right after the semifinal lost with Argentina till the EURO 92 was over (Italy didn't qualify).

The good old times when the EURO only had 8 teams....

^ The format for the next Euros is 6 groups of 4. The top two teams go through, PLUS 4 of the best third place teams in the groups go through to the last 16, followed by the quarter-finals. Sounds a bit bizarre to me. Still I guess I won't complain if England make it through as one of the better third placed teams!

It is better than with 4 groups followed by quarter finals. Feels weird with only 4 groups and being directly in the quarter finals.

More games is always better.

^ I agree with the last bit - I'm certainly not complaining about more games. Even when I don't care about who wins I like having more to watch. It's the bit about 4 of the best 6 third places going through that feels a bit weird to me.

It's not a dreadful format by any means, but I think I might have gone for larger groups. For example you could have 20 teams with 4 groups of 5, or 4 groups of 6 for 24 teams. The latter would give you 67 games in total, as opposed to the 51 we will get in 2012. I expect the format may have been dictated more by pragmatism - need for more simultaneous games and venues if you went for the larger group format.

As a fan I don't mind having more matches to watch but at the same time with so many teams the quality of matches/teams is lower.

What's with the German bus and t-shirts? Mercedes won the WC or Germany?

First time I see a WC Champs bus/team so sponsored... And te 4th star is.... a Mercedes logo! :pp

Am I the only one that is kinda hoping that the US bids and gets the WC in 2026 because of how much football has progressed here?

There has been one World Cup in the States already. Yes, their reception this year was amazing, but it's not like they are new to football.

Agreed there is a risk here. I think that there are many smaller nations improving who can now give some of the traditional big Euro nations more of a game, so perhaps some expansion was merited. This said,16 to 24 may have been a bigger jump than this justified.

German brand and they sponser them as long as I can think back, so noone actually mind. I also like the ads from Mercedes with the team:

Yup, always love the Mercedes spots. This one is from 2012 for the Euro. It combines football, pathos and a beautiful car. A perfect TV Ad.

I understand the logic behind it, I work in advertising, but at the same time I think it's kinda sad that the brand has such a big exposure in the celebration.

I recall Italy in 2006 and Spain in 2010 still wearing either casual shirts or the national shirt while on the bus.

Anyway no big deal, I know sponsors are taking over in football and unfortunately that isn't a good thing.

Agreed, although its not a surprise the way things are going. Replacing the 4th star with a Mercedes badge though - that's a bit of a liberty even by today's marketing standards.

Thinking about it, Audi could have milked it even further if anything, putting the stars between the rings.

Sponsors and money (plus the tragedy of the Bosman sentence) are among the reasons that completely killed my interest in club football.

Always the same teams fight for the titles and always the richest ones. Very boring show.

Indeed, no easy solution though. You could agree at a country level to put a stop to it maybe, but then you wouldn't be able to buy the best players and have no chance in the Champions League, unless every other major footballing nation agreed to the same.

Clearly that was written by some eurosnob, which always seem to boast about football here in the U.S because they have nothing better to do. There are plenty of soccer-specific stadiums here in the U.S that can be accommodated for use in a WC match. There are even (American) football stadiums that can and are used for matches as well (Seattle Sounders uses a football stadium, which is usually sold out when they have games). The U.S is a prime location. The only concern should be travelling, but Americans don't mind going from the East to West coast to watch a game, or literally just to visit a restaurant!

Copa America is being hosted here in 2016 though, so that should be fun.
