FIFA World Cup 2014

I actually fell asleep during this game, first time that's happened! It wasn't bad either, I was just rather tired.

Sorry for the wall of text...

No matter what happens tomorrow, imho, this was the worst WC that I've ever watched.

...

As for England well (I stand by my previous statement, they should play as UK to have a chance!), never mind, peace ;)

We played a good tournament. I'm happy. Tomorrow a final that I'm looking forward to. This is the best world cup I've seen.

Conflicting views here. This tournament has been on a par with the last two for me. The formula has been pretty much the same. Very exciting group stages, followed by very conservative knock-out matches, but you can hardly blame the teams for being that way. The last two Brazil matches have been an anomaly for awful defending. I feel a bit sorry for the hosts to be humbled so badly, Brazil are a nation that has given so much to World football, and they deserved to have a better team in the year they hosted it. The only plus side is it will force them to make sweeping changes, and they will bounce back. It's a bit like when England didn't qualify for 94 on a bigger scale. We then put in a very decent performance in the home tournament. But imagine if we'd made it to the USA? We might have had Graham Taylor in charge and Carlton Palmer on the pitch in Euro 96. Germany similarly went through a rebuild after a poor showing in Euro 2004, and this is actually the culmination of that.

@EramVerdes - I agree, I'd like a GB team. Just putting Ryan Giggs in the mix alone would have made a huge difference between '96 and '06. The majority of the players would have most likley been English, but the Scottish and the Welsh always produce 1 or 2 top quality players. I've got very mixed ancestry though. I suspect the majority of people in the UK don't want this sadly.

Well, I still think that the NEDvsARG was a great tactical semifinal. The defences were so good that they neutralised both attacks. But that's me. ;)

I agree with this. Everyone said it was a dreadful game, but it was competitive, and there was some great tackling on display. Yes it would have been nice to see some goals in normal time, but it wasn't low quality for me in terms of play.

The better team doesn't always win.

Exactly. This also means that Germany may not 'crush' Argentina. Argentina are clearly the underdogs but that doesn't mean that Germany are garanteed to win.

The difference in quality between Germany and Argentina is bigger than between the Netherlands and Argentina, which was slight. But you are right. Argentina has a chance. I don't think it is a very big chance though. But we'll see tomorrow. I'm looking forward to it.

For me, Argentina, Germany, and Netherlands would all be worthy winners. They've been the three best teams. For me there is not much between them when I look at all the games they have played. I suspect Germany will win primarily because they will have great confidence going into the final. I doubt many of their players will agree with my assessment that the 7-1 scoreline was gifted to them by bad defending. That and Argentina will be more tired.

I would like to see Messi step up and play his best football and win it. I know football is a team game, and it is a team that gets you consistent wins, but great stories are made by individual heroes who step up in the crucial moment. If he doesn't then I don't mind so much who wins. It wouldn't be a travesty for either team lift it, or the Dutch if they'd made it for that matter. I hope the final is competitive though, with both teams on the score sheet. The sort of 3-2 match where it could go either way. Incidentally, the last time we had such a final was Germany v Argentina in 1986. Unfortunately with the bitterness of Diego's handball still in my mind, I wanted the Germans to win that day and they didn't! Perhaps that sounds negative, but I didn't want a cheater lifting the trophy, regardless of their skill.

Bullsh*t, they were the better team and even when they have no f*cks left to give they still win. Also, statically speaking they didn't lose, it was a draw. Penalties don't count as a loss.

Can I ask where you are from Raavi? Assuming you are not from England, I'd like to save this for posterity as the view of someone from another country. It excuses five exits out of our last eight tournaments!

This is actually where the Germans have a real stand out ability in the World Cup. They don't miss penalties, winning every shoot out they've been in and more than any other nation. A draw is as good as a win for those guys. I remember thinking in the 2006 semi final, with Italy 1-0 in extra time, that the stereotypical Italian response (perhaps unfairly), would be to sit on the lead. The Italians were having none of it and went on to score a second. I reckon they were thinking "if Germany get an equaliser, it goes to penalties, and then we lose!"

Fifa sponsor Coca Cola held a party in the hotel of the German team last night. f*ck you Coca Cola. If we loose I will never ever drink any of your products again and tell everyone I know to do the same. Unbelievable

Pisses me off. I hope it wasn't as bad as it sounds in the print media (didn't see it on tv yet) and that the whole team was able to sleep well. For such cases the DFB or even the stupid hotel probably has some Ohropax or something like that. I will watch ARD tonight and hope Scholl or someone else will tell us that all players are totally rested and that the party noise won't impair the players performances.

Van Persie is such a pathetic fa**ot, what a loser.

Played crap the entire world cup, people still think he's good. He's insulting everyone who says he played crap and is constantly offside while doing so.

Yeah the loser who is Holland's all time goal scorer and scored one of the best goals of this World Cup. Also managed to score four goals in six matches. What have you done in your life?

See and that's the kind of idiotic response Dutch people give as well.

It's not about how much goals you score in friendlies and in the qualification against FC Kindergarten, it's about how much chances you ruin personally and if you end up making a difference in big games.

I wouldn't know where to find statistics, but I would bet on Van Persie having the highest % of chances wasted/ruined personally. Be it through offside, horrible ball control, running it over the back line or just losing the ball to one defender.

He wasn't even on form this World Cup yet still managed to get four goals? You calling him crap is just idiotic. He plays at the highest level for club too and is brilliant.

How is it idiotic response? He's a striker, strikers score goals and van Persie is great at that. Your looking at the offsides too much, he's a striker that plays right on the defenders shoulder and needs good service. He doesn't get that many offsides at United...

(I'm also at Lisbon, maybe one of these days we can meet for a imperial somewhere, even with Canoxa though he's a fcp supporter :))

I might also support the Selecção dos Açores, lagarto. :p

All of that might ring as true, but yet this World Cup will beat '98 in goals, for example.

This is a horrible scenario for us English. Germany vs Argentina is the worst final we could wish for.

Football should bring us together, not drag us apart and continually remember the differences of the past.

Good luck to both sides. My head says Germany will walk it, but my heart longs for Argentina to surprise them, Vamos Messi !

You are only butthurt because there hasn't been a decent English team for years. England is responsible itself for not reaching the world cup final and not Germany or Argentina. Or are you so upset about the final lineup for non-football related reasons?

No preference at all?

But remember it's about football, not politics.

Yeah I agree with that, I'm not going ape sh*t about it but really they are the last two countries I want to see winning the World Cup again.

The main reason why I don't want Argentina to win is I'm not a fan of Messi and don't want him to win a World Cup. Plus the hand of God situation. I've never liked the Germans but they grew on me after that 7-1 thrashing of Brazil so yeah...

Not for me, I hope Man City International beat Germany to be honest, yeah Maradonna was cheating prick, but come on that was years ago just like The Falklands and WW2 were, so that ain't got nothing to do with it.

I never liked Diego Maradona - despite the skill, his football ability was overshadowed by the cheating, the unprofessionalism, the attitude, then the drugs in 1994.

I don't have a problem with Messi. I've come to admire the way he tries to stay on his feet when other players repeatedly kick him. It was very evident against the Belgium match in particular when you saw the replays. Argentina could do with a more genuine hero and forget about Maradona. I think because technically he was their best ever player they feel obliged to defend his more unsavory aspects.

I like Messi but Argentina don't deserve to win. They've been poor throughout the tournament.

I so so do not want Argentina to win. Germany all the way! Also, it would be great to have a WC winning player in the Chelsea squad next season.

Do you think Di Maria will play with his torn muscle fibre? Maybe for an halftime imho.

PS, the German line up will be exactly the same like against Brazil and France.

I'm so excited and yet unexcited about this final. Germany vs Argentina are the two teams I didn't want to see, but I had Germany as winning in my prediction so I want that. And it's still the world cup final!

^^ Totally this.

Messi deserves to be admired, because he's the quiet, timid and honest kind of person, which is completely the opposite to Maradona's behavior, still he's such a player. I really hope Argentina wins, because they seem to be more passionate than the Germans.

Vamos Argentina!
