Race overtakes

One thing that always strikes me odd when racing in GTA:Online. Continuously throughout any race a ticker shows up on the screen, presumably related to "sometimes when I pass a checkpoint" but I'm not sure what triggers the popups which say "5 overtakes" , "10 overtakes" and so on. No vehicle overtakes take place when this ticker goes up and it increases even on solo races set to no traffic.

Does anyone know what this is meant to represent? As in what is being counted and is there an equivalent entry somewhere in the start menu 'stats' category which shows the total number of these in context?

1Rst place travels from checkpoint 4 to checkpoint 5 in 4 seconds. When second place passes through the same 4 to 5 points in 3.5 seconds that counts as an overtake even if you are half a lap behind them.

It usually happens when catchup is on. I have never seen it in solo.

 

However, there is no explaining "xxxx has taken the lead" when you are obviously not in the lead.

Ah! Cool. So it's an indicator of wether or not I'm actually catching up in the race.
