GTA1 & GTA2 though arcade games do have background stories.

In relation to LCS and VCS, I don't really know the stories that well. However, I know that LCS takes place in 1998 and VCS takes place in 1984. I have also heard that the mob focus in both games is pretty strong, which is what I like to hear, plus both of them take place on the east coast. To be honest, it's quite unfortunate how neither game is for any Xbox console, as I only play Xbox consoles.

I always thought 4's story is the best. It is much more focused compared to sa. You always keep your eye on the story, in sa after leaving Los santos story becomes boring. It is just too long.

But if I have to choose one I would pick 5 I guess...It also starts good but after some missions you start to lose interest.

Best: GTA IV. There's a good reason GTA IV's story is so highly regarded because it's a roller coaster from beginning to end. Niko's not trying to become a king pin. He's a damaged and cynical human being trying to put his past to rest. IMO it's the only GTA that explores how flawed people can be. Even though it doesn't end on a high note either way it's a story I've enjoyed replaying numerous times that I've now pretty much memorised every part.

Worst: San Andreas. It COULD have been a good story if I actually gave a sh*t about the weak protagonist. It's obvious R* wanted to try and tell a more serious story, but couldn't until it was finally realised with GTA IV. I didn't care about CJ avenging his mother's death, I didn't care Big Smoke and Ryder betrayed him. I didn't care about anything that happened to him at all and I mean that in the nicest way possible. The entire story feels at odds with it self. One moment it's trying to be as dramatic as Boyz N The Hood. The next it can't make up its mind whether it wants to be Die Hard and/or Ocean's 11. I could understand how it might be appealing to some, but to me it's an unfocused, poorly paced, clusterf*ck.

The only redeeming quality is some of the characters like The Truth and Woozie that prevent it from being a complete failure.

I'll go with:

1.- GTA IV: in my opinion, if we talk about the story, is the best game of the series, having powerful characters, a correlative atmosphere, crude experiences, and that feeling of "I don't wanna do it but I have to" definitely makes it a unique story.

2.- GTA EfLC TBoGT: similar to IV, I really liked the story, the decision of R* to give us more activities in the same city was a great idea and a perfect way to improve the story itself.

3.- GTA EFLC TLaD: I'm a huge fan of motorcycles and having an story fully focused on a bikers club is simply amazing, the only minus points about this game where the absence of the feeling present in GTA IV.

4.- GTA SA: I really enjoyed the story, it doesn't feel so forced to continue but what I really hated was the end (...) an open finale giving us the wink to a possible continuation that never made it.

5.- GTA VC: even if is my last favorite game of the series, my main reasons are not related to the story but mainly to the graphics and atmosphere of the city, it feels like a dream where you are unstoppable. I still have some kind of "love-hate" to the game because of two reasons, the first one, the story is based on Scarface, and second one, a bully at my elementary school used to play it and always talked about it.

6.- GTA III: as simple as a predictable story with no unexpected turns and such things. although I never finished the game, I always had that feeling of "I'm playing it to unlock more things"

7.- GTA V: absurd story; I mean, you made a heist and getting inside a train that follow a circular railway it's your best way to escape the cops and even military?. Characters that take decisions without sense, protagonists doing whatever they want without consecuences, etc. The only good thing was the background story of North Yankton, that was the only part of the game where a heist had real consecuences.

Best Story: GTA VC. Completely connected to Tommy's goals and what he did to reach them. Also rewards for accomplishments made.

Worst Story: GTA IV. I once fell asleep while playing this GTA. The only time that has ever happened.  Played the story once and never cared to return. The episodes, while shorter,  were more engaging for me.

1. IV

2. San Andreas

3. Vice City

4. III

5. V

And no, this is not how my Overall Favorite GTA Experience ranking would go, which in that case V will top Vice City and III, respectively, and San Andreas will top IV.

From what i played:

1.SA- You really don't know who's the evil in the beginning, which will be someone which is close to you!

2.VC- You're friend is your enemy...

3.III- You're GF is your enemy...

From the ones i've played,

1. IV

- undoubtedly the best in every manner

2. Vice City

- with a very, very close second

3. San Andreas

- awesome in Los Santos, but 'okay' in other areas. However, LS was enough for me

4. TLAD

- the mere concept of the story made it great

5. V

- good enough, but way mixed up

6. III

- didn't make much sense

Yeah... The story of GTA IV is the best...

-GTA 5

-GTA Online-I guess Online has a story too,and it's easily the worst in the series,I really hope it's not canon because if it is it completely ruins HD GTA universe.Originally it made sense how you worked for small time criminals like Simeon and Gerald, and then progressed to working for high ranking criminals like Madrazo and Lester, then it got a bit confusing how after stealing millions in Heists you go back to being a gangbanger with Lowriders and an outlaw biker in Bikers (the CEO route seems more likely, but I guess it was still plausible to go back to small time if you wasted your money on stuff from Ill Gotten Gains and became broke again),but then it got completely ridiculous with Doomsday Heist when you become a super spy who fights an evil artificial intelligence.

I also played GTA 2,but it was over 12 years ago,so I don't really remember the story.I didn't play CTW, Advance or any other top down game except GTA 2,so I know nothing about their stories.

1. IV.  I feel like this is how Rockstar wants to be, a serious story with a bedding of satire and poop jokes.  This one felt the most emotional and grounded in reality.  Annoying or not, the narrative actually made me care about Roman.  I'm actually happy to see way less people than I thought sh*tting on the story of this game.

2. GTA V.  Too wacky for my taste.  I think they tried to make it more realistic by saying "they get away with this sh*t because they're basically working for the government", fine, but if we're going that route, why are we flying p;lanes into other planes?  It made all of the heists super unsatisfying when after them all you had to say "here, take you're cut FIB".  Bitching aside, they managed to make Trevor extremely sympathetic, which really needs to be commended.  The weird dynamic between to old white dudes and a young black man was strange, but it was interesting and it worked.

3. San Andreas.  Kind of had a slice of everything and it was rolled together nicely.

4. Vice City.  1980's cheeseball nonsense, it was great

5. Gay Tony.  It was a world I never thought I'd enjoy seeing a glimpse into, but I will say Luis is one of the least likable protagonists I've ever played as, except for maybe Cole Phelps

6. TLAD.  I really like Johnny(I actually hated Trevor for what he did initially) and I enjoyed the whole story, but I give it points off for being basically the same general plot as Sons of Anarchy.  I don't think it's a ripoff, I just think its unfortunate timing.

7.  GTA III.  This game's story is basically like seeing the Beatles playing in their garage.  You can see the genius, but at the end of the day, it's just a bunch of kids banging on trash cans.

Best Vice city and Vice city stories

Worst San Andreas and GTA V .

San Andreas is sometimes funny and make sense, but GTA V story what a mess. You dont care about anybody because they are seen once in story. You feel robed all the time.FIB missions took so much time that can be used for instance gang wars with Franklin.I hate these secret service plot lines in gta, R* finally make agent and dont mess with G-Mans in gta anymore.

1. GTA IV. I mean, obviously, this is the one game where the focus is on the plot.

2. Hmm. VC. Aside from optional missions for Love Fist/bikers/Cubans/Haitians that make less sense for a drug baron to do, the plot is really close to me. Maybe just because it's my favourite game AND a first GTA.

3. SA. Kind of unfocused in the middle, but still good. Also, CJ is a likeable protagonist.

4. V. Hey, it's still good, even if less memorable. Also, I'm really enjoying the feeling of the 'world', with the main plot, lore in the internet etc. interconnected.

5. III. Kind of basic, mostly unconnected strands of plot until you meet Catalina once again. I kind of feel revenge wasn't even a focus of Claude, he kind of lets go and goes back to what he does well - working for a the highest bidder; and then he kind of stumbles upon Catalina and she tries to kill him again.

5. VCS. I really enjoyed the game but the plot is less good than in VC and feels somewhat second-rate.

6. GTA1. Well, duh. Excuse Plot as it is, you work for dudes then have to leave for another city; rinse and repeat.

Didn't play enough of the other ones to have a grounded opinion.

I think I should give a shout out to Vice City as the best 3D era story. It's a fun story that just gets straight to the point. Where GTA IV is obviously king when it comes to characters and having a meaningful plot Vice City just feels like an 90s crime flick to me, but that's a good thing. The star studded cast from Ray Liotta, Tom Sizemore, Danny Trejo, Dennis Hopper, Burt Reynolds etc really brings it to life.

It's not as dry and dull as GTA III (Though GTA III was the first of its kind. So I'll cut it some slack) and doesn't try so hard to try and mix insanity with drama like San Andreas. It knows what it is and personally speaking it was a great feeling getting to the end and having Tommy as the f*cking king pin of the city.

Yep. But Tenpenny is only good because of Samuel L Muthaphuckkin Jackson. Just kidding lol😉

OT:I wish R* spent more time on VC story. It felt like it was rushed and full of plotholes. Still amazing for a 1 year project. VC is like DLC before it ever was a thing.

  1. Grand Theft Auto IV: The Lost and Damned. (it imposed itself in only 22 missions. I liked the whole gang life setting, especially motorcycle clubs. I also liked the fact that missions are squad-based with the club, rather than doing the job alone as in the other titles, which despite being fun, is realistic. I started adapting to the dark atmosphere setting in GTA IV, but I completely appreciated it and liked it in TLaD.)
Grand Theft Auto IV. (a true masterpiece. Can't really think of anything to complain about.)
  2. Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. (while it has its flaws, it's still one of the greatest stories among the franchise.)
  3. Grand Theft Auto: Vice City.
  4. Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories.
  5. Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories.
  6. Grand Theft Auto III.
  7. Grand Theft Auto IV: The Ballad of Gay Tony.
  8. Grand Theft Auto V.
    Grand Theft Auto V: Online.

Taking a revision:

  1. GTA IV & The Lost and Damned
  2. GTA III - Might be surprising, I know. Character backstories and emotions aren't really existence, and neither the cinematic cutscenes or dialogues are as advanced as in the successor titles, but I really appreciate the grounded, crime vendetta story it is. The dark tone and charming characters add more to it as well, and to its benefit, it didn't overstay its welcome.
  3. Vice City & San Andreas - Both stories started up pretty tight, but unfortunately, they overstayed their welcome. The first half of Vice City's story is amazing, but the majority of the second one consist of the asset tasks and some tedious errands for Love Fist, but at least the Cubans, Haitians and Bikers had pretty cool branches. But still, there're a couple of situations that really felt too cartoonish compared to the overall story of GTA III, or even San Andreas in that matter, such as the weird cab battle and the RC missions. As for San Andreas, starting with Los Santos, the narratives felt quite interesting and the atmosphere was also pretty cool, but it started to lose some of its charm after that, even though I did enjoy most of it. This gets even worse as soon as CJ meets Toreno (who is among my favorite characters by the way) and starts doing the government agent missions. Not to mention The Truth's totally nonsense missions in the desert. And then there's Las Venturas, which has absolutely nothing to do with rescuing Sweet, but revolves around the Triads' casino and their rivalry with the Italian mafia.
  4. Liberty City Stories & Vice City Stories - I still stand by my opinion that the story of Vice City Stories is underrated, but that doesn't necessary mean that it's among my very favorite GTA stories so far.
  5. The Ballad of Gay Tony
  6. GTA V - To be clear, I don't hate it, even though it really bores me. I just don't find it exactly as good as the other stories.
  7. GTA Online - Not even worth mentioning.
