Grand Theft Auto V - A masterpiece or a flop?

Lock n' Stock

Neither for me, maybe a bit of both in some departments. It did deliver on various things, but fell short on others. It's great, but the perfect scores are VERY undeserved imo. It seems like critics nowadays like to praise based on popularity rather than quality (not that GTA V isn't a quality game).

Not to be rude, but did any of you read the full post?

Especially the part where I said that it is all subjective?

Yes, and I'm wondering why you bothered to make this thread when it all doesn't matter because it is all subjective.

I'm not being sarcastic or a smartass. You're right.

Gnocchi Flip Flops

To me, it was far from a masterpiece. As "absurd" as this may sound to many of you people, I think IV was much closer to a masterpiece than V and I still think IV needed some more stuff to make it a masterpiece. Why do I feel that way? Well IV was at least good at being what it was trying to be. It felt like a true GTA, a true R* product, and it felt for the most part complete. To me, V feels like Rockstar just focused on what the bitching people wanted and it ruined that magic, everything good about IV, it just doesn't seem right...

People here were saying the exact thing about IV back in 2008. Actually the hate was x100 of what it is now for V. Doubters will appreciate V more and more over time, just like they did with IV.

It seems to me that people who hated IV still hate IV (myself included). However, the people who loved IV are more vocal now due to the changes.

The internet is not one collective conscious.

Thank you, that is what I've been trying to say to him and people like him.

It's far from being a flop, but it also is from being a masterpiece. I see Rockstar Games as, the Ferrari of the gaming industry. They don't make products quite often, but when they do, you expect it to be special, to be unique, to buy something that is at a higher degree. Like Ferrari, they built up their reputation by handing out, games after games, some real quality products. And just like Ferrari again, when they announce something new and big (GTA V) and make some noise about it, you expect it to reach a new level. I don't think V achieved that. It's a good game, I still play it quite often, but, just like I consider a much older Ferrari to be the king of them all (Ferrari California 250 GTO :inlove: ) I consider a much older GTA to be the king of them all too (GTA III).

Well if he didn't get it when you told him, then he probably never will.

I'm not sure if it's a matter of stupidity or stubbornness

I should've explained myself better, excuse me, this is the first time that I am writing a huge ass post. c:

I don't mean that you should choose between "masterpiece" or "flop", I aimed at the whole thing that it is subjective, it is neither, this is merely a post to those who hate the game for the most superficial things and defend the game just because they're fanboys.

I should've expressed myself better, apologies. :)

Why no one consider RDR a flop?

Why not LA Noire a flop?

Gta5 is better than both of them,it's a flop?

If you say gta5 not masterpiece ,which game is more worth the title than it?

General consensus says that there is something amiss with GTA V. It isn't a masterpiece. It's like a Charlie Murphy's True Hollywood Story(which is a masterpiece betch).

It's definitely not a flop, but I wouldn't go as far as saying it's a masterpiece. Needless to say it's one of the most enjoyable games I've played in a while.

Gauntlet Hair

I just got done playing NV.

I have a lot of favorite games. Fallout is high on the list. Fallout 2 was the first game I played ever, back when I was 10 years old.

V is a very great game, not perfect, but no game ever will be. NV certainly has a better story than V, simply because it's a Fallout game, and Fallout's lore has always been spectacular.

I think RDR is worthier of being a masterpiece than V. It's just more balanced in itself. The good stuff balances out the bad one. I still play IV and RDR, to this day (and if I had a working PS2, I'd be playing GTA III era games) and I know I will for a long long time. V on the other hand, I don't know if Im even going to play this game 3 months from now. It was good while it lasted but it just doesn't have any replay value for me. I completed it 100% a month ago and now all I seem to do when I play, is drive around, just drive ... the game is pretty much dead for me.

A flop.

It could have been better, it should have been better and sadly won't be any better regardless of the DLC that is thrown its way.

The performance of the game, from a sales point of view, kind of makes it impossible to describe as a 'flop' - it's the fastest selling entertainment product of all time.

In that respect, it's a masterpiece of marketing and hype.

Signatures are dumb anyway.

The open sand box world- graphic wise, interesting wise, detailed, responsive, interactive, immersiveness, awe inspiring, creativity wise, and just the plain fun factor of it all makes it a masterpiece... In THAT aspect.

However, the vast open- seemingly living, limitless world is constricted by a linear, limiting story and options. Since Vice city (I didnt get too far in IV so I dont know ) but since vice you could live in a number of homes... even in III you had 3 for your character. In San Andreas you could have cribs all over the place... Why is it so limited, why can you not enter your businesses and change things up, only do simple missions for them.

The story, Im not through it yet so I shouldnt judge... but I am close.. I've done most heists... and so far they have all seemed far fetched and all over the place.

WTF happened with like half the sh*t going on... does it all come back in the end? I know some of it does... but there is so much left unsolved and hanging.... Im not complaining or trying to complain, it has blown me away.. the whole game in every aspect. but I am not convinced or attached. Like *SPOILER IF YOU ARE ANCIENT AND HAVENT PLAYED RED DEAD* I shed a tear for John when the sh*t hit the fan... I wanted to kill all those f*cken army men GET OFF MY RANCH !!!! THIS IS MY LAND!!!! TRAITERS!!! I felt confused... in a good way.. after seeing the Mexican revolution. I even felt some regret... or perhaps longing for the old ways after John blasted Dutch off that cliff.... Like perhaps Dutch -was- fighting for something meaningful....

Now .. (ANOTHER SPOILER) I am running out of a small bank in northern california wearing enough armor to top bullets and minor explosives.... only to fight my way with bags of money... down 3 blocks to a train station.... then... have Franklin slowly trot his way through tanks and helicopters to "scoop" the others up and take them to the train.... like WTF how is that an emotionally involved story?! all the main characters do is bitch at each other.... The Heists are incredibly scripted.

Heists... Like I dont even care if they come out for multiplayer... everything is scripted and hold your hand... You should have to spot that hole in the Union depository and make it your own decision to utilize it.... or perhaps you have to watch the building for 45 min (whole day) and see what comes in and out... take notes... follow the armored truck by yourself!!!!

Why does Lester have to do everything for you..... this is kind of why I prefer multi... I play on hard diff... free aim.. then get a good crew... designated roles... we will do laps around the objective... scouting it out.. looking at entry points... where to attack.. ect... In free aim hard.. with legit weapons you cant just go in blasting..... its not about farming.. its about the act of planning the perfect heist/assassination/job/getaway.....

Right now Im digging Online.... I pick my home... love my apartment... love my 10 car garage... love insurance on my whips... INSURANCE WHAT A f*ckEN CONCEPT... I never kept cars in past GTAs untill I made 100% and could just reload saves every time I lost my whip...

I just hope.. they make heists more like the missions in MP (which is agaisnt what everyone else wants) ... simply because scipted bullsh*t happens once and every time that same way...

You know how many different times you can do (death from above) and still have it interesting with different attack/escape plans? that mission is rough sh*t... I always see on the forums ( oh look on this mission you dont have to complete the objective to win so lets do it 10000 times till we have 1 million dollars and are level 100... ohh sh*t there is nothing to do in multi boring game!!!

So far... I think conceptually GTA 5 is a masterpiece.... they said they wanted to make this a progressive thing... so lets see if it can evolve physically into a masterpiece.

To me, GTA V is the best mix of GTA IV+ EFLC and RDR.

It's not the best GTA at all, but the best GTA of the last generation of consoles. It couldn't be any better. I believe Rockstar did all they could on the platforms

For me it's a masterpiece. Unlike the ten year olds on here, I actually went into this with realistic expectations. The only people who are disappointed are those who overhyped the game to unrealistic limits. Compare this to any other game on the market, indeed any other GTA game, and it fares better than many, it's one of my favourite videogaming experiences of all time.

I think Cruel Joke is more like it . The entire game is a huge troll on all of us . 500 hours of gameplay =zero rewards .

What happened to the old days when we actually got something for all our hard work .

A cheezy ass useless ufo and an even more cheezy ass space docker .

Not to mention the top of the line tractor .

Golding missions is a complete joke . Based on luck rather than skill .

They give you a time limit yet they decide when cops magically disapear whether your in their sites or not .

Oh how bout them missions where you have to reach a top speed yet there is no speedo , really ? i mean seriously .

Who tested this game MICKEY MOUSE ?

Almost forgot about the freezing on top of Chiliad . But hey its only the most popular spot on the whole map who cares if everyones game freezes there .

I hate to admit it but they definately got me on this one . I even bought a ps3 just to play this game . Huge mistake . Luckily I have learned my lesson . FU R *

So anyone who is disappointed with the game must be either :

a) A ten year old.

b) They overhyped it and had unrealistic expectations from it.

Your saying that it is impossible for anyone to have a genuine, valid reason for being disappointed with GTA V. Yeah whatever, no point in this discussing this properly with you.

I really hope you are enjoying the taste of fecal matter while licking Rockstar's asses clean.

V better than RDR? LOL. People don't know how to appreciate good storytelling anymore. It's all about cheap thrills nowadays. V is good but Rockstar f*cked up making it out to be their boldest and most ambitious game yet when it's far from it. Disappointing but certainly not a flop.
