MP3 + RDR = GTA V

I got a chance to play GTA V for a while today. My cousin has the 360 version, and I got to play for a few hours. I messed around, did a lot of story missions and side missions.

After playing, I can see why a lot of people dislike this game. But I kept an open mind and played it my way. It's like an open world Max Payne 3 with a hint of RDR.

  • The shooting, the character physics, the cover system, the weapon wheel, even the graphics are reminiscent of Max Payne 3.

  • The walking animations, the special abilities (this ties in with MP3 as well), the random events on the streets (like hijacking an armored car) reminded me of Red Dead Redemption.

  • The driving is really arcady like many people have said. I didn't hate it, but I didn't like it either. It's twitchy, and a bit sensitive. I found it kinda hard to control some cars because moving the stick a little too much to the left or right to try and turn ( even when driving all proper like the NPCs) and the car turns too hard and goes off the road and hits another car or a sign/post/wall etc... I think the driving is something I have to get used to. I still prefer IV's driving because it's not as twitchy.

While playing I've noticed framerate stutter and pop-ins. It wasn't a distraction, but it was pretty noticeable. Also the aliasing is horrendous, but it's to be expected from a console with 2005 tech. I wasn't really paying attention to the graphics and little details while playing, but I do take notice.

I don't really know what to say about the radio. I didn't like it, but I didn't dislike it either. I know that once the PC version is out, I'll be listening to the custom radio station more often than the in-game ones because they don't really appeal to me. I favored the radio stations in EFLC a lot more for this gen's GTA.

All in all GTA V felt like an open world Max Payne 3. They tried to bring back some of the silliness of past games, while keeping it down to Earth.

GTA V is a good game, but I think the problem is that a lot of people bought it expecting good old fashioned GTA fun, but ended up playing a totally different game. I can understand that, because that's how I felt. I think it's a good game, not a 10/10, but at least an 8/10 based on the time I've spent with it. I'll have to buy the game for myself and play extensively to really judge it and give more opinions on it. But until then, these are my thoughts.

If this game allowed you to jump and shoot like Max does I'd probably never play anything else to be completely honest.

Yeah, GTA V is basically a "best of" collection for R*, in the sense that it incorporates elements from nearly all of the games they've released on this generation of consoles. I say it's a 9/10 game. I actually wasn't very fond of the new shooting system, I found the one from GTA IV much more detailed. Driving is okay, no complaints there. Radio is basically the definition of "mixed bag" but there are some really great tracks on there.

Weren't you the guy saying how IV shat on V and refused to say why a while back? Kind of hard to keep an open mind if it was you.

Yeah the shooting mechanics are much better in Max Payne, in GTAV they're pretty "Clunky", and playing the game on free-aim is way harder than it should be because you get pistoled from 200 metres away. The game is catered towards giving auto-aimers a challenge, which is fine, but they should at least changed the accuracy of the enemy when you're playing on free aim.

Yes what you said is how I felt as well. I even sensed a little LA Noire as well.

Like I said, I didn't hate or like the driving, it's just something I have to get used to. And the radio isn't bad, it's just not my cup of tea. But it really feels modern. I don't listen to the radio a lot irl, and I'm not a big fan of pop and rap. So I listened to Channel X, The Down Low, Radio Mirror Park, and Vinewood Boulevard really often.

No I never said that. I recently changed my username, so perhaps you must be thinking of someone else.

No problem. Thanks :)

I haven't played Max Payne 3 in awhile. But when playing GTA V, it reminded me a lot of it.

I wish I could have tried Online, but the wifi was down.

I wish.

I'm usually good at 3d person shooters like RDR and MP but this...

You expect to have a few hits on your enemy because you sprayed a little to let it come to an end. Not the case here, now AK 47 and other rifles feel way less good. Low firing rate, less control on the shoot(tapping the gun two times for an exemple), and your character is too clunky to run and shoot, and the reticule gets off WAY too quick.

They should have gone with a way more mobile character model and require more time to die as a help to increase the firing rate.

Both RDR and MP had great story modes while i find V bad story wise, imo.

End rant.
