I don't get what I'm supposed to be doing?

Right I've been playing online for over a month now and I'm still unsure as to what the whole story is about?!

When I started I got the intro mission and cut scene, and then 1 mission where I had to help Lemar go and get something. But now what?! I keep getting endless texts from Simeon and sometimes from Ron and Trevor. But how do I do these missions? There are no mission icons on the map for me to go to?

When I do accept a text mission it just loads up one of the standard multiplayer ones?!

I've looked for walkthroughs and guides but can't find this out anywhere. I still have to collect the cars for Simeon that he text me about, do I need to do that first before any other missions come through?!

Most of the time I find myself doing a couple of survivals and races, wandering round for a bit and then turning the game off. All seems a bit directionless.

You're supposed to "get money".

To help you out, pull up your phone and the center icon is a job list. You can browse the jobs and pick the ones you want. Unfortunately you have to complete a bunch of crappy missions before you get the good ones. Just go down the list and do all the ones that aren't pvp.

There's no linear storyline on Online. You just do the missions in whatever order you want.

Your map should look like this:

29qodgm.jpg

The blue stars are missions, the skull is deathmatch, the chequered flag is races and the survival one is a triangle with a star in it (not shown on that map)

Just drive to one of those or go to "quick jobs" on your phone and choose missions.

you basically want to save up for an appt with a ten car garage then fill it with modded cars you like, plus unlock and buy all your favourite clothes and weapons..

i was annoyed by that as well.. nothing really connects. as said, there is no linair story line.. just a bunch of seperate missions.

just save up for your garage, get some cars you like and have fun with other players in free roam

Ok cheers people, looks like it's as I thought then.

Just seems I'm constantly getting texts from people giving me missions, but these just turn out to be the standard multiplayer ones I can do anyway? What's the point in them if I can just choose any job I like anyway?!?

I guess it's just to add a little direction and encourage people to do missions rather than bum about in freemode.

I think you can reduce/turn off the phone calls somewhere in the online options, they begin to grate after a while..

if you get this message and the person sending it to you is a real player, it's an invite from a friend / crew member / player you recently met in missions. but i'm sure you already knew that..

the texts and calls from lester, gerald, ... however.. well.. remember roman's calls in gta IV?

I personally like to use quick job, just to to the start menu, then jobs, host or join job, and bam! Instant lobby with at least 1 other player.

I think missions should be fundamental to the Online experience.

They shouldn't arrive by annoying texts and "reminder" phone calls. I'm also not keen on fast travelling through the map (although I accept that some people don't like to travel.)

I think instead that the game should direct you through the missions in a more structured way.

- Contact markers should appear on the mini-map as in single player, so that you can drive to the marker and start a mission. (You could still phone your contact and 'Request a job' if you want to change the available job marker on the map.)

- Missions should be in a near linear order so that you must complete one to get to the next one.

- Missions should provide proper rewards, more than cash and RP. So the Contact Bonuses (i.e. Lester hide blip) you get, or good weaponry add-on's, should come from completing specific missions - not your rank.

And once you have completed the 70 missions, the custom mission editor should allow infinite continuation for the future.

There is just too much available at once. I think the game should actually restrict the activities in order to better direct you through them. And also to remove all those hundreds of blue activity icons from the entire map.

Yeh I started off doing it that way, now I host the jobs I want to do, that way I can choose :)

They do get incredibly annoying after a while, that's why I wondered if I had missed something somewhere. There doesn't seem to be any structure or direction to the online side, which is a shame.

Yeh I figured that out, lol. I'll just jeep ignoring them then as I've been doing up until now, if they start asking me to go bowling I may break the controller! lol.

That's the trouble I'm having, there's no direction whatsoever, I can only bum about in freemode for so long without getting bored.

It feels like I'm just grinding the same jobs over and over to get money, there's no real point to it.

It's RP that's more important than money, as far as game progression goes. As you get a higher rank, more missions are opened up for you, so you do have something to aim for, other than a chrome penis adder.

It's always much better with friends, where you can just muck about together.

But even then, it can often become a "what shall we do now?" situation.

Free roam has some really good ideas (gang wars, bounties, Import/Export car, crate drops) but I don't think they're implemented perfectly just yet. They need to find good ways of bringing people together (and I hate that they rely on blips on the radar to achieve that.)

Missions and other events need to be better directed and have better rewards. Currently you get rewards by rising up in ranks, which you can do just by spending time on the game (except good car customisation, which often requires race wins - which I like.) I think rewards should be given for completing mission, race, survival sets instead.

This would give some point to playing Online with achievable targets and a better structured free-roam.

The customisation tools can take over once the R* missions and races are "completed".

Game is boring as sh*t. Haven't done a mission in over a month since they all suck.

Have to say, the missions aren't great, which I can understand because they can't have the same polish as single-player.

But they could let you spawn in a sensible starting point, provide you with sensible vehicle spawning points (if a helicopter is required for instance), give you better instruction of the mission (sometimes people don't get time to read the spec and don't know what they're doing) and then remove gimmicks like respawning enemy points.

Add in proper bonuses for completing mission sets and all would be well. :)
