"iBuyPower showed off a prototype for its first Steam Machine, which will be out next year for $499. The sexy white box will have a multicore AMD CPU, an AMD Radeon R9 270 graphics card, a 500GB hard drive, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, SteamOS, and a Steam Controller.

Don't run at me with torches ablaze, but it looks like this early Steam Machine will outperform the new consoles, at least from a raw power perspective. TFLOPS is a way to calculate how fast a computer is, and according to Anandtech the PlayStation 4 has 1.84 TFLOPS, the Xbox One has 1.23 TFLOPS, and The Tech Report has the R9 270, a $180 GPU, at 2.4 TFLOPS. With similar AMD multicore CPUs, the edge will go to the system with the better graphic processing and speed.

This is a lower price with better hardware than most people were expecting. Valve's own prototypes are all above this price point, so it's nice to see that the first third-party system will be very affordable. We'll learn more about the hardware of this box, and other Steam Machines, atCES in January.

Well it looks amazing. It has a beast graphics card and the TFlops is very good. I'd like to say that although it is a bit more than the PS4, this clearly beats both consoles. Well it demolishes the Xbox by miles, and it's pretty ahead of the PS4.

Problem is there might not even be decent or even a long list of games on it. Sony still has the best exclusives and always will so what will this bring?

It will be able to play Garry's Mod. Garry's Mod > Sony exclusives. :p

Can't wait to buy these. Seems a great price for everything. I just hope it's a six core and not a quad.

Will wait to see the game lineups and the exclusives. Tempted to get this but I doubt a lot of people will get this.

It's a PC though, it's not like a console where it'll have a dedicated community. At this price point I think a lot of people will jump on it. A good gaming PC for $500? Forget about it.

What Eerebos said. This thing is a prebuilt PC, not a traditional console. Any games available on PC will be available on the Steambox and vice versa.

There's one small caveat though; the thing is running SteamOS, which can run the linux games natively, but apparently Windows-only titles will have to be streamed into the machine.

I might have to buy this but I need to wait a extra year cause I don't know if it will have a decent amount of good games and exclusives. Sony by far has some of the best exclusives I ever seen in gaming.

Question if any are willing to answer: So is this steam machine like a console or a PC?

Dual boot. :D

And redx, it's a PC, but its running SteamOS instead of Windows.

As for exclusives, if you're smart enough to dual boot with Windows 7 or 8, you can have any PC game available through Steam. You buy Counter Strike and Garry's Mod and your fun is only limited by your imagination, you do almost anything you want in Garry's Mod. You got Prop Hunt, Trouble in Terrorist Town, RPG Servers.

If you like realistic and tactical shooters you get Arma 3 and Battlefield 2 with Project Reality.

Except there are so many not so good exclusives. I mean from my point of view, I could careless about Garry's Mod or Arma 3. I would rather have excellent games that have excellent stories, very detailed and fun. Not lame Battlefield or sh*t RPG games. That's the only problem I have with it. I mean this is a beast, but what's the point if there isn't even any quality games. Plus for example, you know how Rockstar teases PC's with GTA which is now going to affect this too.

I realise a lot of people are going to buy it. I would too, if it had much more games. That's the only weakness. I don't like games that are on the PC. It's one of the reasons why I have a console.

But I'll see in the future. I may buy it alongside a PS4 and give it a try.

I just like the fact that they decided to make a PC/console box that's actually very powerful and cheap.

I would rather have excellent games that have excellent stories, very detailed and fun.

So you want a PC, which has thousands of games of all kinds, many with excellent stories, very detailed and fun.

I mean this is a beast, but what's the point if there isn't even any quality games.

Except for, you know, all the thousands of high quality games that have come out over the couple decades of lifetime it has had, and the ease of development/accessibility. Lol at no quality games.

I would too, if it had much more games. That's the only weakness.

I'd estimate the numbers of games released for the PC to number in the high tenths of thousands, perhaps going into the hundred thousand mark. Is that not enough for you? And cutting edge graphics, if that's your thing, will always be on the PC.

I get that you prefer playing with a controller (you can too on a PC though, and with better controllers). I get that you prefer some of the exclusives that come out for consoles, I do too (specially Nintendo games). But to dismiss the PC as a platform because it "doesn't have enough games" is ignorant at best.

@Erebos: Dual boot, pshaw! I don't want to fiddle with a console :p Plug and play, ho!

Out of tens of thousands of games, 9990 of them are sh*t. RPG and FPS games are just absolute filth (IMO) and there is no exclusives that are as good as Sony's. Sorry to sound like a fanboy, but I'm not. Also, I don't want cutting edge graphics but games that I would not even play for 2 mins. Most of the games are not even made on disk, they are either free to play through the internet or just normal flash games.

Shut the f*ck up...you are like the biggest fanboy I've ever seen. You probably lie to your parents thinking that they buy your bullsh*t and that you got one over on them. Guess what. They along with almost everyone you think you are conversing with know you are just an annoying lying little kid.

As far as the second line I quoted you on; Please stop talking about sh*t you know nothing about. I'd ask if you ever played GTA IV on a high end gaming rig, but I know you would just lie in your answer.

As far as $500 for a Steam machine. I'm f*cking excited. I've been waiting for the days when we'd start seeing something like Steam machines, or smaller game centered PC's for living room/TV use.

You're generalizing more than the people that claim all of Sony's modern exclusives are movies. As someone that bought a PS4 in anticipation of the exclusives, I could never give up my gaming PC. It has just as many if not more that appeal to me as well as being the platform of choice for multiplats. I have no interest in owning a Steambox since I don't need a 2nd PC but I'm looking forward to the exposure that PC gaming will receive because of it. I'm also glad there will finally be a good prebuilt for gaming, for those afraid to build their own.

Stop tripping on acid, no pun intended. u mad bro? In fact, you're a fanboy for trying to dismiss my "second" line. It's true that a LOT of games are free to play, and half of them are some of the sh*ttest games made. It's my opinion. So I suggest you stick to yours.

Oh and I HAVE played IV on a high end rig. It only looks good once you f*ck it up using ENB, icEnhancer mods just to improve the graphics. Yes, you can use a lot more mods too which is good, but it is still the same sh*t.

I don't think he's ever played on a PC, I popped my cherry with Counter Strike Source. I was just amazed on how accurate I was able to aim. Then I played Max Payne 3 on a buddy of mines PC and everything looks sharper and honestly makes me depressed when I go back to playing on my 360. :p

As for the free to play games you'd be surprised how good they can be.

Jesus, I didn't say they didn't look good or play good. There are SOME free to play games that are good. But like I said, most of them are really sh*t. It's coming from experience. Can you not accept opinions? PC isn't the perfect platform. Far from it.

What the f*ck are you going on about free to play games? Do you not know you can buy games on the PC, games which are really damn awesome and well made? Some of the greatest "story" experience, as you enjoy, are found on the pc, simple as that. Some of the most innovative/challenging titles will be found on PC, due to how many developers you have for it. I don't get your hate on RPGs and FPS either, calling them filth. For every "sh*tty" free to play game you find, you'll find another good game on the PC. You're entitled to your opinion, but in this case they are completely wrong/misinformed/ignorant.

And I said TENS of thousands, not ten thousand. Out of the circa 100k games you'll find on the platform, you'll have at least 1000 which are great and compelling games.

You say Sony's exclusives are better. Let's see, according to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_PlayStation_4_games, we have the following (discounting RPGs and FPS, since you hate them):

-Basement Crawl (Action)

-Dream Club (Dating)

-Driveclub (Driving)

-Everybody's gone to the rapture (Adventure)

-The Idolmaster (Rhythm)

-Infamous (Action)

-Joysound Drive 2 (Karaoke)

-Knack (Adventure)

-Lily Bergamo (Action)

-Mobile Suit Gundam (Action)

-N++ (Platform)

-Nikoli no Puzzle 4: Sudoku (Puzzle)

-Phantom Breaker: Battle Grounds Overdrive (Beat em up)

-PlayStation Raving BabyFirstTV (Kids)

-Rime (Adventure)

-Shadow of the Beast (Action)

-Tottemo E Mahjong Plus (Boardgame)

-Uncharted (Adventure)

I added bold to the titles that people are really looking forward to. That's it. Those are the exclusives Sony has on their lineup for now.

A quick look at steam shows 1011 indie games, most of which are exclusive to computers. Let's say that only 5% of them are actually good. That's 50 games, and not many FPS among them either, and a lot of adventure games in there. 90% of those aren't free to play either, they are buy once play forever. Adventure games alone, counting indie and tripleA, Steam has over 600 titles, a fair share which are very good and will always be playable on your computer, years and years from now. A fair share of those, also exclusive to the PC. Counting all games on steam, you have just shy of 6000 titles. A portion of which are rubbish, a portion of which are great, a portion of which are exclusive to PC, and all of which will ended up in extreme sales, meaning you get even more value out of them. In free to play, steam has 200 odd titles. A good portion of which are pretty solid and good, and exclusive.

So, see, your argument about PCs have no exclusives is, factually, bullsh*t. And that is looking only at Steam as a distribution channel. For free flash games, look at Newgrounds, around 30000 titles, the vast majority of which are rubbish, but you will find real gems, innovating and exciting games there. f*ck, if 0.1% of them are any good, that's still 30 games, which is a pretty good deal, specially since they are completely free. And PC exclusive. f*ck, Kongregate alone has 70000 games. So my original estimation of 100k is way, way off. No idea why you are so hung up on Free to play games though.

Noone is touting the PC as the perfect platform either. We are just responding to your crap argument/opinion with facts. All platforms have their advantages and disadvantages. Ruling PC out for "lack of games" is just laughable.

Just so you all know.. this was sort of what the Xbox One was supposed to be like. Just the fact no one realized it, then started being hater taters. (But this will still be the better deal)

I think the Steambox concept is great, but if it only plays Linux games, that's down to 403 titles, according to the Steam store. Not exactly decades worth of PC games. I haven't followed the development of Steamboxes to absolute detail, although I guess if you can install Windows alongside it, that's great... but you then had to add in the cost of a Windows license, as well as the hassle of changing operating systems and booting into the Windows partition and starting Steam in Big Picture Mode. Yeah.

At least you're guaranteed to get recent and future Valve titles, though. Half Life 3 would sure be a killer "exclusive" as far as consoles on the shelf go. I doubt Valve would want to waste their time messing around with silly Playstations and Xboxes anymore once these get popular! :p

I suppose I have the same sentiments as others; I don't really want to spend $500 for another PC that I'd have to use on my 720p TV.
