Franklin acts as the sane character that keeps Mike and T (or "the crew") in check. Trevor is insane, Mike is, to an extent, also insane. Franklin acts as a barrier from Mike killing Trevor and vice versa. Lamar is also a good character, but Franklin is better suited to be a protagonist than Lamar. The story would have to change, Lamar seems to get on with T but I can't see him connecting with Mike. Basically the game would have been San Andreas 2.0. A record would have been set for most uses of the word ni**er in a video game... I loved San Andreas but I DO NOT miss turf wars. Not even slightly. Sure, a few of his lines and his moronic attitude gave me a bit of a laugh, and sure he seems to know what he's doing in a brainless car-theft job which any idiot could likely handle with ease, but he just isn't serious protagonist material.
