Let's say you had a job that your parents helped you get, and it's something that is good for you in the long run (benefits, good wage, etc.)

but it was something you didn't really want to do.

Or, leave that job and go for something you really want to do, but was a little more stressful of a job, and you are not too sure if it may provide you

good benefits or even a steady position in the long run.

Kinda stumped but just want an opinion from whoever. Do you leave something that may be a good investment in? Or leave and do whatever it is you love,

but aren't too sure if it is a good investment for your career.

i would do the job what your parents got for you. you never know it actually might be good, and you may enjoy it.

try it. and if after you think you do not like being there, then go for the one you want, if its still available.

i rather have the job which has the benefits and has a good wage. if it was REALLY bad then i would leave, and get another.

just make sure that if you leave the parents job, that the one you want is good/ better. you don't want to leave it and regret it after. do the research, and ask around.

Go for stability.

I AM SORRY ABOUT THE QUALITY OF THE VIDEO, BUT MY WEBCAM IS ABSOLUTELY RUBBISH.

Do whatever you like to do...

Source: My psychology teacher. He told us (the class) that you'll eventually grow bored and annoyed to your job if you don't feel like doing the said job, even if it was a good salary. He told us about a test where some people were paid good money for moving a brick pile to another spot and then moving it back, brick by brick. They stopped doing it soon after they realized it was pointless.

Anyway, the job you told about might not be pointless, but the point was that if it's boring, it's likely that you'll dislike your job later on. It'd be better if you do what you want to do, since that way you can keep your interest and focus in the job better than if you did work you don't feel like doing. My teacher told about it that way too, but I don't remember about it much now.

Go with the job your parents got you. It will support you in the long run and that's what matters. Really a no-brainer.

If you guys really think I should stay with the one I got then I might as well with this economy. Right now it's a little tough because my position is Substitute, so I really don't get a lot of hours. I'm already bored of the job, but it's low stressful, pretty relaxing other than doing some tasks. I don't want to risk losing something that I already got because my interest says otherwise.

If there's room for progression in the other job/career, why not? Take the risk. If you have a family to provide for, continue on with the monotony.

If you don't mind me asking, what are the two jobs in question?

I am currently a substitute Custodian working in a well paying school district. The other I may want to do as well is working in an auto body shop. I love cars.

Feel like there's no "right" option here to be honest.

Let's face it,if you are to go with a job that your parents helped you in obtaining, sooner or later you'll be hating it and wished that you'd have went with what you liked, since your current job would most likely be boring to you in a few.

Then again,if you were to follow what you like, you might hate it again if there isn't enough income.

The chances of both of these said situations happening is about 90/100.

Keep both of that in mind and choose what ever you'd be really satisfied with in the long run. If you can't change it,then the only thing you could do is adapt later on. Its all about the choices you make and understanding that it was your own decision :p. No one can really tell you what's the right thing to do in regards to this.

Also have a check on your current financial situation :D.

GrandMaster Smith

I personally would choose to work in an autoshop any day over doing custodial work.

The experience you gain from working with cars would be worth much more than the better paying mindless job. Just being able to know how to work on your own car yourself rather than taking it into a mechanic every time saves you hundreds and thousands of dollars in the long run. Then if you ever decide to open up your own shop you could be making $80+ an hour.

I'd work in a car shop for free if given the opportunity but I love cars so that's just me lol Just do what you enjoy to do, you only have one life so might as get the most out of it even if it means you're making just a couple dollars less an hour.

Not necessarily, If you're in a job you don't like, this can affect your mental health, and as cliche as it sounds, money doesn't make you happy. No point being loaded if you have a job you hate and feel generally unhappy, this is going to prevent you meeting people, making friends, having relationships, and stop you from doing and getting out of life what you really want to.

If you do not feel like this current job you have is something you want to do until the end of your life, you need to get out, and as soon as reasonably possible. You want to be an Auto-Mechanic? You can do it, you just need to put your heart and soul into it, if it doesn't work out you can try and come back to your old job, then perhaps find something else. People say "It's hard to get a job" well not if you put every ounce of your being into getting one, the guy that just goes around handing in resumes isn't going to get a job, the guy that goes around calling places and asking for interviews and showing confidence, wanting to work will get the job. Don't stress about losing your current job, if you have the motivation, you will get another if the auto-industry doesn't work out.

Here are some inspiring words for you, I seriously recommend watching it (and other Schwarzenegger success videos), the words apply to body-building, but you can easily change that into all aspects of life, skip to about 1:20 to 2:40 for the best part, the part that is most important, also 4:15 to 5:00. If you don't want to watch it I can quote it. But then, if you're not willing to watch it for your benefit, perhaps you should just stick to your current job because you obviously don't have the motivation to make something of yourself.

Whatever you do, give it your all and you will succeed, life as a mechanic can be tough for a while, but there is much money to be made if you play your cards right, you seem like a smart enough guy, so you can definitely do it.

One last thing, just because you fail at something, it doesn't make it the end of the world, you just dust yourself off, and try again.

Thank you for this response, very helpful! Much appreciated. I will take a look at the video as well. I'm willing to give it a shot, but it's really the heart ache and drama I try to steer clear of with the parents. They always support me but as far as my mother, she just tends to be idiotic at times. She acts like I won't get any good benefits or even work for a good boss if I switch to the auto business.

You guys also have good points. Saint, you are pretty right on with it. That's why I felt stuck, because there wasn't a right option. Didn't know what to do. Grandmaster Smith, I think there's a good reason to leave, because I could have way more experience doing that instead of something mindless and boring.

I would choose to stay with the custodial job. The job I have now is good paying and fairly stable but can be stressful at times. So I have been considering looking for something easy like custodial work. It may not pay as well as my current job but atleast its easy and stress free.

Well not if you have a passion for it.

What I would personally do is this: work where you are for a while until you hit enough hours or money to ask for a vacation. Spend this time looking for a shop you can try to work at (there's internships in some of them), or at the very least make friends with some of the workers, if possible the boss. Network. When you set up a vacation schedule, go ahead and try the job as a mechanic. Experience it for yourself, but just don't make the experience less than a week to get a reasonable grip on what it's like working as a mechanic. Or, this is more likely in mom and pop auto-shops, ask the boss (who I assume you have befriended at this point) if you can try your hand at doing auto repairs on slow evenings or something. If you like it, he'll probably get you a fairly sweet position.

Basically: network. Networking is key to every single career imaginable.

I don't know about having enough time to do that on vacation. Besides I'm only a substitute. Not part time or full time.
