Cars not automatically insured.

From what I know of previous experiences, when you buy a car from an online store and it gets delivered to your garage it automatically gets insurance but regardless I still go down to the customs and check that it is covered and it always is. So with the $500 000 bonus from Rockstar I was feeling pretty impulsive with my spending so I brought a Corquette and moded it out. Then somewhere down the line it gets destroyed and I get a message saying that in future I should insure my car for damages (I've had the car for a while at this point and it's been in and out of my garage several times). So what's happening, does the game just randomly decide which cars it wants to insure and which it doesn't?

I'm sorry, but the whole "in the future you should insure your car" part had me rolling.
