Vice City Save Converter

Steam version of Vice City has a bit altered save format compared to all the other (non-digital) versions. When using a Retail save on Steam copy the game would just run a new game instead. Retail Vice City is even unable to load a Steam savegame, resulting in a crash. As a result, there is no way to resume your old playthrough on a newly purchased Steam copy nor come back to a disc release without losing your progress.
This tool solves that issue by converting the saves between these two formats (both retail -> Steam and Steam -> retail).

Usage

The tool requires either an absolute or relative path to a savegame you want to convert to be specified as a launch parameter. Therefore, you can launch it either by dropping a savefile on VCsaveConvert.exe (Windows only, obv) or by launching cmd.exe/Terminal and executing the converter with

VCsaveConvert [your_save_path]
The tool will then identify a save version and ask if to proceed with conversion. A backup will be created in case anything goes wrong.

No more problems dealing with SnP for VC! Have a cookie. :cookie: Or two :cookie::cookie: , or perhaps even three :cookie::cookie::cookie::).

Seeing how Mobile SCM files are different (thus saved offsets are not compatible), very unlikely :(

When you say different, you mean different from PC right? Or are Android and iOS different too? I got a save on iOS that I'd like to convert to Android.

Yes, I mean PC. iOS and Android saves should be compatible with each other.

Thank you!

What was the difference between the two versions?

What was the difference between the two versions?

Evil R* added an extra, useless -3 value into the first section and Steam version checks for its existence on load. If it's absent, a save is called invalid.

100% artificial thing to revoke compatibility with old saves. In SA at least they had a point (different SCM), but here? No reasons whatsoever.

Are you sure it's useless? I only asked because I was wondering whether the difference is important or not. It's rather peculiar that they would add something like that for no reason. Why would they want to make the two versions incompatible?

-Looks at Linux version-

You deserve an award (or several awards) just for making a Linux based tool.

As what Silent mentioned earlier, not a chance. Game logic has been altered in the mobile versions and as such saves for iOS and Android won't work on PC.

Alright, so a year later i'm hoping I can still get some help. Whenever I drop a save file into the converter, the exe just closes with no error. I went into Documents/GTA Vice City User Files/ and then I dragged my save file that I attempted to load into the converter. Then I pressed enter and it would close. I don't know if i'm stupid or if theres something wrong.

Are the Steam save files located in the same place as the disk version (documents/GTA Vice City User Files)? I did as instructed, told it to proceed in converting the file, it did, but I still have no saves to load. I've tried renaming the file by changing the number (GTAVCsf1/2/3/...) to see if it would appear in a different slot, but it doesn't. I downloaded a random save online from the same point I was in the retail version, put it in the same place and it doesn't appear either. Any ideas what I'm doing wrong?

Are you using any compatibility modes? If so, you shouldn't.

That was it, I was running VC in 98 compatibility mode. I turned it off and now it works like a charm. Thanks. :^:
