Never played Single Player...explain how heists work to me

I dont even know if they are in single player or not. But if they are then answer these questions:

 

1. How is my heist room needed in the process

2. Do i need friends or can it be done solo

3. How much do you get from them

4. Can a bank be robbed whenever or is it certain times

a. If certain times then is it a race to see who heists first

5. Will i just have 2 stars when leaving and have to hide under a bridge and lose the cops or will there be a nice cop chase

6. My apartment is located directly accross the street from the bank. Can i be used as a look out using my telescope while relaying messages to my friends?
