HOW'S ANNIE?

IV vs V in terms of atmosphere/vibe

Recommended Posts

They should do all three cities in the next GTA, which is what they have also said they would like to do. Vice City, Liberty City and Los Santos. That would be amazing. After that, it can be in a new place because these three would have been dead by then.

I think it would make more sense to replace Los Santos with Las Venturas since VC and LS have more or less, similar vibes.

There is no reason to do Liberty City or Los Santos again. Both games are in HD. Now LV, VC, and SF would make a perfect GTA game.

If you prefer starring at shiny graphics instead of having fun, then I guess I can see why someone would prefer IV. The smaller city in III and LCS was far more fun and felt original, where everything about IV was so detailed yet felt very lifeless.

I enjoyed the feel of V but it was short lived. It was no where near as memorable as Vice City's 80's atmosphere or the late 90's in LCS.

Condescending much? I've had plenty of fun playing in GTA IV's LC over the years. Why do you GTA IV haters only assumearrow-10x10.png those that enjoy playing it are about graphics? It's one of my pet hates in regards to the general attitude towards GTA IV on this forum. F*cking ridiculous really.

GTA IV has always felt more "alive" to me than any GTA that predates it.

I wonder if no one really understand that GTA IV pretty much redesigned every gameplay aspect of GTA from the ground up. I mean, why else would they only think of graphics? There is so much freedom just in how GTA IV lets you move around, so much more than in the 3 universe, and it makes a difference in how you play the game. It's awesome to get in shootouts at random locations and find cover behind pretty much anything that can cover you. No set chest-high walls everywhere just the ability to hide behind stuff. If there's anything GTA IV did right it was how to free roam.

I played GTA III to 100% three weeks ago, and I would definitely take IV anyday. The gameplay in GTA III is just awful. If it wasn't the first game to put all of the features in one game it would have been a laughingstock.

Exactly. Some of the best moments I've had as a GTA fan have come from GTA IV. The gameplay from the GTA III era is very dated, but there'll always be those that'll try to sugarcoat it. Or those that don't have spine to admit GTA IV done more for the series than just graphics.

Technicalities aside I love the dark and gritty feel of GTA IV. I just wish R* spent a bit more time adding more random crime. That's the only thing that doesn't compliment the dark and gritty feel to its fullest IMO.

GTA IV makes me feel like I'm apart of a crime ridden sh*thole whereas GTA V feels like a holiday.

The gleaming skyscrapers, cold, trash filled streets, the sound of the subway smashing the tracks, seagulls near the water etc just make GTA IV that more atmospheric to me.

Count me in, I'm with you on this :^:

Felt exactly the same way.

@ NikoVercetti112

Very true indeed. GTA IV has more of that organized crime/gang feel in it's atmosphere because those elements were heavily involved in the storyline. GTA V just feels like a a few bunch of criminals causing havoc in the city, while everybody just goes about their everyday business. If V had more of a gang/OC element to it's storyline, then I would have felt differently, but they hardly figured.

I think the main theme of GTA V is hollywood, and ganglife doesn't play that big a role. And even when you are in poor neighbourhoods, there seem to be supercars everywhere. I agree with the people who say that IV had better atmosphere and I also agree with the people who were skeptical about the countryside now. Los Santos feels smaller than IV because it has no water dividing it, and the countryside is a nice extra but I don't care that much about it. There's not that much reason to drive through it and explore it considering there is no city on the other end like there was in SA.

And though GTA V feels so Hollywood and superficial compared to IV, I get why they chose this theme in modern day LA, because it just isn't 1992 anymore. But I'd like it if they went for some messed up ghetto filled American urban area that has suffered because of the economic crisis next GTA. Maybe Detroit.

IV + TBoGT + TLaD was just an amazing GTA experience, and maybe it can't be improved upon that much.

I think that he is just confused about the FIB being involved in the story. Don't you remember when Michael made a deal with Dave about that plot with Trevor in North Yankton? Well, when Trevor eventually found Michael, obviously it brought a threat to Michael and even Dave's career, and Michael had to patch things up for Dave by working for him unwillingly and not by choice.

@ FranklinDeRoosvelt

You are such a f**king dumb fool, it's not even funny.

Of course I f**king know what the FIB involvement with Michael is all about, I got the game and finished it. My point is, I just did not care for that part of the storyline, to me it later got boring and uninteresting. That is my view, deal with it. And that almighty dollar pursuit theme was not really expressed properly, I don't know you can even say that. Only TWO out of 6 heists were all for the benefit of the 3 protagonists, the remainder were all to do with doing dirty work for cops and agents. No, I just was not impressed by this.

@ niko bellic half brother

@General

This is just what you seem to be struggling to understand though, again no offence intended here. R* did stick to the traditional concept of dealing with gangsters. They just replaced street hustling gangstas and suit wearing mobsters, with "ligit" gangsters who are supposed to be on the right side of the law. Like I keep saying, R* wanted to tackle something fresh, and show a new light to criminal enterprise. It's all criminality at the end of the day.

That is not believable criminality that was displayed in GTA V. Even the worst corrupt cops and agents don't get down like that. It was just all to much like a glossed-over, Hollywood action/cop movie on steroids, but very corny and poorly written. I'm sorry I just don't wanna play GTA to be working with or for corrupt cops and agents all the time, I wanna be dealing with conventional criminality like the gangs, mafias, drug cartels and the lot - in addition to the heists. You cannot just lump criminality altogether, it has been expressed properly.

@ gtaexpert

Real life LA still has gangs, the Mexican cartels have a major foothold in the drug market there, there are Russian, Aremnian mobs. that stuff is all there.

While I really did enjoy GTA V (and still do), I sometimes feel like there's something missing or underdeveloped. I cannot exactly pinpoint certain aspect, but it could be combination of various elements (map, soundtrack, something else..?). Technically and mechanically V is superior to IV, but from time to time it feels like some elements were cut/missing from the game.

That's just my personal opinion/observation after playing the game over a month.

Summarizing my long winded post on the series: GTA IV had such an impact on me that when I was playing it I had to set down the controller before making one of the choices. I've spent probably most of my time on my xbox 360 and on my PC both playing GTA IV. For me it was more than just a game it was an experience that I can't get again, and that makes it special to me. V is a good game, definitely in my top 5 for this gen, heck most likely top 3, but GTA IV just had something special that keeps me going back to it and keeps it at #1. I have not had as much fun with any game in my life.

The random crimes are definitely one of the things I'm most glad they brought over from RDR. I just wish they were a little more random in V. They all seem to happen in the same areas except the ATM robber who can apparently appear at any ATM in the city. I also hate that some of them lock off as the story progresses. What's the point of having a random event that never happens because you never knew it was going to happen and never ran into it and now can't ever run into it?

That's the way I feel too. I still enjoy GTA V, but GTA IV always felt more "developed" for its time of release. GTA V feels glass half full/half empty in certain aspects.

the problem is that the whole game is about the FIB

This bothered me at first too. In the history of American entertainment, especially during the years when Hollywood had to follow the Hays Code and television had to be "wholesome," it was actually written into scripts, on purpose, that all kinds of action heroes were somehow government agents, because that made them officially not outlaws and children wouldn't be corrupted by watching them. This is why the Adam West version of Batman for 1960s TV is officially a deputized law enforcement officer in Gotham City and not a vigilante.

GTAV ironically mimics that setup by basically making the three criminals all be government agents of a sort, but now the message is not that the government's blessing makes these criminals legitimate, but rather the government is itself just another kind of mafia. If you've paid attention to the "War on Terror" and been following the NSA story for the last 10 years and not just since Snowden, you get what Trevor's torture mission is really saying (hint: it's NOT saying "we can get away with putting graphic torture in the game of the year and it's so much fun!")

I love how the government is so sleazy and corrupt in this game because I think they are not much different in real life but I wish we were fighting them more than working for them. Why couldn't we have been ripping them off on the side some of the time?

I prefer my crime stories gritty and a little dirty and IV was that in spades. It truly did feel like you were pulled into the criminal underworld. You could almost smell the pissy stairs in the projects and just feel the sleaze around you. Even though it was set in 2008 it reminded me of NY in the 1970s and probably should have been set during that time. I don't want crime games to be all cartoonish and extra colorful. I enjoy Saint's Row but it doesn't even feel like a crime game to me except for maybe 2 while IV just feels like you are in their with the dregs of society.

I agree, IV atmosphere helped me immerse my self more. GTA V is still hard to get in love with the atmosphere and city. I'm trying so hard to. GTA V is def one of the best GTA's hands down but the feeling of being connected to the city and atmosphere isn't there. I have no drive to explore dumb sh*t, listen to random convos, interact, etc nearly as much as the other games. Which is weird because GTA V has a greater amount of content that's supposed to make the atmosphere more likable. Idk, not to be pessimistic but I just don't think V will have that "thing" that games like Vice City and San Andreas has that makes them perfectly playable and enjoyable even after all these years and advancements in video games.

Agreed. I was just playing GTA IV walking around the streets and I'm convinced it destroys GTA V for atmosphere and feeling like a city. Even late at night there are neighbourhoods teeming with peds and cars. LS is so dead at night in comparison. With the exception of the pier.

I saw a guy tie up his shoe laces. I have never seen that before in the 5 years I've played GTA IV. Another thing that seems to really kill GTA V's atmosphere is the lack of drug dealers. Quite often I love to stand near by them in GTA IV as they deal. Some peds buy while others don't . Admittedly it took a good 4 years to notice them in GTA IV so maybe they do exist in GTA V, but I haven't seen any yet.

I even miss the hobos asking for money. So many things seem to have been left out like when peds would be on the side of the side for a DUI stop or looking under the hood of their broken down cars and looking in the trunks etc.

I hate dark and gloomy in my games unless it's a game that goes well with it, like a horror or RP game. Loved V's vibe, was indifferent to IV's.

V is obviously superior to IV in every way...except things that come down to personal preferences.

Los Santos is more varied, looks better and feels more alive. However, I too, liked Liberty City more. It just comes down to personal preferences. I like New York much more than Los Angeles. Driving at rainy night in Algonquin, listening to JNR will always remain one of the most powerful moments I've ever experienced in a video game.

I think nostalgia and soundtrack also contributes to this. I've been playing IV for 5 years. It was my first game for current gen systems and I've never put it down. Of course, I played many other games, but in the end, IV always found it's way back into my disc drive. I've completed the story more times than I remember and spend countless hours freeroaming in Liberty City or playing multiplayer. Liberty City just became my virtual home. For that reason, I think it will be hard for R* to beat IV (in my mind), no matter how big, fleshed out and amazing city they'll make. I've been caught up in the same nostalgia trap VC fans or SA fans are.

And for soundtrack, I really like V's soundtrack. It's harder than it seems to make a good licenced soundtrack (SR: TT, anyone?), but V's is great. But once again, I just like IV's more. And good music playing in the game radio is a huge factor for me when freeroaming in open world game. I spend so much time in IV just driving around and listening to music.

In the end, V IS the best GTA ever made. No doubt in my mind about that. It's just that I liked IV more. It's irrational, but emotions rarely are.

I agree that IV has better atmosphere than V, but the amount of hypocrisy in this forum never stops to amaze me.

Weren't you guys complaining about the dark moody atmosphere of IV and wanted a more lighthearted experience out of GTA all these years?

Didn't you complain that IV was too focus on one city and it should have more diversity?

It's just because there is a new punching bag for haters. People will love V when VI comes out.

I like the vibes of both games very much but they both have a very different feel. LA and New York have a very different feel in real life so it is only natural that this applies to the game world.

I was once one of the biggest critics of GTA IV, I will admit that. I did feel a bit letdown by IV after I first played it and finished it (and I still do in a way), but I always acknowledged that flaws aside, it was still a great game that's exciting to play and with many classic, memorable moments and characters. I even began to like IV and appreciate it much more than I did before when I had another playthrough of it just under 3 years ago, because I discovered new things.

Ask Miamivicecity, he will tell you I had changed my mind about IV long before GTA V came out. But after playing V and realizing that IV still did certain things better, I appreciate IV even much more so now.

@ woggleman

Yeah you can say that, but at the end of the day if a game does not fully live up to expectations for many people, then it is what it is. It don't matter how it happens, if people criticize a game and the next installment after it, there will be reasons for it. I'm pretty sure it won't just be made up bashing for most part. People will call something out as they fit. We cannot deny that both IV and V advanced/progressed and regressed at the same time in their own ways, mostly with regards to gameplay features and content. But I think in V's case, it's different, because V had every opportunity hugely improve on what IV did wrong or missed out, many like myself feel that this was not the case, despite the fact that V was better than IV in many areas at the same time.
