Not to derail the topic, but do you know where someone could do that? I've tried Ancestry.com and the farthest I've gotten back was 18th century Ireland, couldn't go any further.

 

I'm not entirely sure. I had someone in my family that is now dead that was majorly obsessed with this stuff and had records going back to about the 1500s. It is all a bit dubious in my opinion because as was mentioned earlier, this stuff was not recorded accurately and many people changed their names when they came to the US.

Telling other people that you hate these stuff isn't going to do much for you mate. If anything,you'll only start to detest everyone around you,which isn't exactly good for you. It's all about adapting to changes anyway.things are not always going to run the way you want it to be like. Certain people enjoy some stuff that you might not be into,and you might enjoy stuff that others are not into. As for music,most of the artists actually use effort to create them . It isn't some automatic computer generated soundtrack that'll be available in 5 minutes after clicking random buttons. I'm not that much of a fan for dubstep,but I certainly do respect the people who create them.

Yeah, I know the surname didn't change after coming to America, it went from Stuart to Stewart after my ancestors went to Scotland, though. I just can't find anything else past the 1700s.

I'm assuming that doesn't tell you who your ancestors are, just what you have in your blood, right? (i.e. Eastern European, Scandinavian, etc.)

Actually, there are some very specific markers that can pinpoint direct ancestors. The most obvious of these is Ghengis Khan, for over his lifetime he cast his seed far and wide. He's thought to have hundreds of millions of children's children's... Etc.

It's completely within the realm of possibility that all American presidents are related by sheer coincidence; I looked at my family tree once and I'm pretty sure I'm the Queen's 21st cousin and that hasn't done me any favours.

Actually, this is not entirely straight forward. German is #1 by a large margin. Irish is #2, African is #3, and English is #4. If you combine the Irish, English and Scots you JUST surpass the Germans. But if we are talking about Great Britain, the English, Scots and Welsh alone do not come close to the Germans. It is only when you add the Irish that you have the #1 figure.

Well, I don't want to pick straws, because we are more or less in agreement - But you also said most Americans come from Britain, which is not correct by any accepted definition of Britain, Great Britain, or the United Kingdom.

 

Your comment about the Isles was an entirely separate remark about something entirely different.

 

It is not a big deal, just something I wanted to clarify. Even if we include all of Ireland we are still talking about a figure that is something like , from the top of my head (not checking actual numbers right now) 20-25 percent of Americans, which is not most of the population here by any stretch of the imagination - It would be the largest block, though.
